The hype and fan reaction to SC2

I wasn't into the SC series before the release of SC2 on consoles so I have no idea how the hype and reaction was to it. With SC5 there's a fair amount of fans panicking due to the fact many characters will not return. SC2 is the only other game in the series which removed (or almost removed) several main characters from the series: Hwang, Rock, Siegfried, Mina and Sophitia (last 3 were in the console version though).

If anyone can remember, were fans panicking about those characters possibly being removed/replaced or did people simply think it was not a big deal?
 
They probably did, but I honestly wouldn't know. I think SC II dragged in a lot of new fans, and so these days the complaining probably seems louder as a result.
 
I think the main reason they panicked so much was that their favourite character(s) were being removed and possibly replaced with another one or even that their favourite character(s) were being changed dramatically in the next game. It's like I am afraid that Ivy will be "noob-friendly" in SCV because she will not be as complex as she was in SCIV as they are removing one of her sword states so she will not be as varied as she was previously. I think the reason people complain about other characters is because their favourite character is not going to be in the next in the series so they have to make everyone else's favourites get worse. IMO, they made Ivy easier to use in SCV because a lot of Ivy haters kept saying she was overpowered. Haters are gonna hate.
