The Weight Loss Thread

It's best to weigh yourself once every 3-4 weeks, rather than once every week.

It allows you to psychologically relax and enjoy the exercising process (and we do best at things we enjoy), and there may be times were you gain weight for something you've even done right (like drinking a lot of water). Having a long time limit allows you to properly assess what's going on with your body.

Anyone here used a machine called Jacob's ladder? I was on it for a little less than 20 minutes yesterday and I was freaking DYING. Burned something like 400 calories. CWAZY! My legs almost feel like I squatted.

Well, a report.

I'm down to 223.5 from 228 from the first time I posted. I started muscle training 3 days a week since I first posted here. Yesterdays muscle training was helping a friend move, carrying boxes/moving furniture for about 3 hours. Today I just got done with a double loop of Mt. Watatic- 8.4 miles; and I swam across the local pond.. dunno how big it is, but it took me about an hour. My diet has been the biggest problem- in addition to eating healthy and keeping my calorie count down, my high blood pressure makes it so I have to watch my sodium and cholesterol like a hawk. Any tips on dealing with that kind of stuff?

If you got a Hypertension then you should watch out with strength training. Lifting heavy weights with HBP can cause a stroke. How high your BP is and do you measure it at home? Also, do you take any blood pressure lowering medications? Depending on how high your BP is, you should go for lighter weights with more repetitions. Also, never hold your breath during lifting exercise, I wouldn't recommend drinking coffee and energy drinks too because they increase BP.

Losing weight and cardio exercise will lower the BP in the long run. Maybe now you have an elevated blood pressure because of your weight and it might go back to normal once you hit your weight goal.

That's what's up, losing the extra weight, keep at it! It's amazing what a little resistance training can do.

Like Ring said, it's pretty dangerous to do strength training while having high blood pressure. Ways to lower blood pressure is reducing your sodium intake. Boneless skinless chicken breasts are the way to go with this, using no seasonings except for it's natural broth (It tastes pretty good when baked). Mixed veggies with no ranch in your diet also lowers your sodium intake, and if your working out, naturally your blood pressure will go down when following these steps. Fast foods are a no-no when dealing with high blood pressure, everything in it have high amounts of sodium. Also during your strength training, if you have a Heart Rate Monitor use it to avoid any possible injuries when lifting. I naturally know when my body has had too much, when my heart starts pumpin to hard and if it gets difficult to breath then I know i'm goin to far. Hope these help

Also I know this is kinda off subject, but during the p90x routine yesterday I pulled 134 pull-ups! If you guys didn't know, when I first started this program I couldn't even do one pull up. I was happy when I got to 7 in a row, but now I can do 20 and more! I'm also able to do 1 arm pull-ups now, talkin' about bringing it! X

Do a lot of reading and consult a doctor before starting. That's the best route. Given the BP, it'd be best to be professionally informed.

Yo, I have straight up over eaten both yesterday and today. Counted up I had 1,956 yesterday and today I had roughly 1,936+. May not seem like much but so I don't have to overwork myself fitness wise, I gotta stick to the diet. Now, my BMR is, something like, 1,807-1,898 and my daily calories to maintain weight is 2,277, so given that, I think I'm okay. I just gotta push harder the next 3 days.

So I did some hiking-prep today. Did two full loops of Mt. Watatic trying to jog it the entire time... so fucking brutal. 8.4 miles. Gonna repeat daily as weather permits.

Ate veggies mostly today with grilled chicken for dinner for my protein requirement. My doc told me I should be ingesting about 66% of daily recommended sodium and cholesterol values, and take asprin as a blood thinner; but otherwise I was cleared to exercise. This nudges me even further into my already mostly vegetarian diet. Veggies help me save on calories without overdoing it on the sodium.

That's awesome, you really got a plan and are working hard. Please keep this thread updated with your results, dude.

I wouldn't think your doctor would not recommend not working out to lower blood pressure seeing as sweating lowers BP. Keep at it, glad to see you stickin with it.

Arrogant if you're exercising then doing 2,000 calories isn't bad at all. The average human is suppose to take in at least 2,000 a day, so it shouldn't effect you too much. If you around that area with proper excercise you will get results.

You're right but my goal is 2 pounds per week. Last week was only 1 and I was glad 'cause I had done really bad and still lost weight. I said, "I never wanna go a week without losing at least that," and that's true, but the goal is 2 pounds. I mean, I hate exercise... I do it, but boy do I hate it. I only like it afterward because I pushed myself and accomplished it, but starting's a pain. (LOL)

I mean, 2,000 cal isn't a lot, but check it out... I know that you, as one of the two the premier weight-loss guys on 8WR, know that there's gotta be a deficit to lose weight, so this isn't for you but I wanna explain this for others to see. My calculated avg. BMR is 1,794. I'm sedentary really. So I multiply my BMR by 20% (which equals 359). That's how much I burn by being alive and avg. calories burned in regular activity in a day. Next is digestion, which also consumes calories so I take 1794 + 359 = 2153 and multiply this number by 10% which is 215. Added all up, my Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is 2,368. A deficit of 500 cals a day for a week is one pound (3,500 cals). So I could eat 1,868 cals a day and still lose a pound and that's with no exercise, but it's proven that people who exercise reach their goals because it provides a cushion, affects the mind giving an individual drive, and curbs hunger so you're more likely to stick to the diet. So, a good plan would be to eat 300 cals less than my TDEE and have a daily exercise that burns 200 cals all to burn a pound a week. To get 2 pounds, I need to double that.

This week if I lose a 1.5, I'll be fine. Next week I can't have that. There's 5 weeks in June. If I lose 6-8 pounds this month, I will finally have broken into 170s. Shogun, the last time I was 170 was in 2007 before my grandmother died. It was after she died that I let myself get to 200+ pounds probably due to depression. When I have dieted in the past I could never leave the 180s. I would stop the diet, but that was because they were crash/fad diets. Now I have a good plan with an exercise routine, support, and have been doing well tracking everything I eat... I can do this.

To me this is like redemption. I've always been a pretty confidant guy. After losing my grandmother who raised me, it was like losing my mother all over again. I was left with an insecurity. I didn't expect to be without my parents at 24. That sense of protection that parents provide, that I hadn't recognized before, was gone. Still, I knew I would be okay. Despite knowing that, the emotional pain still affected me and it wasn't until I stepped on the scale that I realized how. When I saw how heavy I had gotten and how it changed certain things in my life, I became even more insecure and started to lose confidence. I can't redeem a lost parent but I can regain my confidence. This is about me. I'm gonna do it.

Haha! You know, its like this... I have been exercising since April now (2 months) and, yeah, I hate the thought of it. Almost every time my alarm goes off on my phone at that time of the day and I read, "Exercise time, son!" I groan, but I do it. It's like I want to and I don't. Afterwards though, I'm glad I did; always. Maybe that's the start to the "love".

Not too long ago I was in the Navy. I remember in boot camp doing PT. Our division were fat-bodies, most of us were overweight. I wasn't, I was at 130 lbs then. I was 19. It was a struggle for me then too those 8 weeks of training. At the end, I was happy for the experience and I think about that now and that pushes me. At this point, I don't think I'll ever stop. It's a way of life and I remind myself of that. The compliments I get from friends also pushes me.

It ain't love yet, but at least I kind of like it. LOL

Yeah, so after last night... Really wondering if I'll lose anything. I knew going I was gonna eat, drink, and get back late. Twas fun tho'...

Cutting unhealthy influences out of your life is part of it; unless you work extra hard. It's the sad truth. Before you eat, ask yourself, how much work am I gonna have to do to get rid of this?

Dude, def' is the truth... I noticed the more serious I was with my diet, I had to avoid certain friends only because I know what we do when he hang. We go out and eat, stop at a Wawa, pick up something there, run over to someone else's crib, eat maybe a sweet desert... you get the picture. So I would just have to decline hangin' unless I knew what we were doing ahead of time.

I hate having people eat around me when I can't. I knew at the party I was going to but then I really over did it after a few shots. Not to mention, I got back so late I knew I wasn't going to work out, so yeah... We'll see how it goes tomorrow morning when I weigh myself. It's also the start of a new week for me, so I'll be going at it again.

Happy to report that my weigh-in this morning was 182 lbs. That's 3 pounds since last week.

congrats.

I didn't know about this thread. In total I've lost 15 pounds. Im down to 184 as of today. My goal is 180 in a 2 week period. Then I'm going to set a new goal for another 5 pounds etc. I like to set short term goals over an appropriate amount of time.
