Throw Escaping on reaction vs. predicting/buffering

First I'd like to say that I'm sort of new to competitive soul calibur, the only real experience I have with the series is vs. the computer in SCII, and that was years ago. Anyway, I know that you can break a B+G throw by pressing B and you can break an A+G throw by pressing A. I've been having alot of trouble seeing throw animations, and I can rarely break them on reaction. So I figured most people just mash A or B while they're guarding to protect themselves against throws.

Long story short, I went to a tournament the other day (bane's southern CA tourny) and I found out that people DO break throws on reaction. wtf.

I guess it's kinda hard to help people with this kinda stuff, but anything at this point would be appreciated. Thanks.

Breaking a throw on reaction is just something that comes with practice. After a while you'll eventually recognize the throwing animation visually. As for advice, make sure that when you're on the defensive that you're paying close attention to what your opponent's character is doing visually. Also, it might help to mash A or B even as you are being successfully thrown, at least you'll be associating the motion with the visual you see.

Predicting a throw helps you break it as well. Recognize situations in which someone wants to throw you. Once instance where it's almost obvious that an opponent is going for a throw is if he/she knocks you down and then runs up really close to you as you're getting back up. Another instance might be if a Nightmare or a Siegfried has their back to the edge of the stage; both of them have a throw that can RO behind them.

I predict almost every throw and duck on reaction, though I'd rather do a jumping move or grapple break.(start learning better habits now) Point being, you'll still start to recognize throws on reaction. Another point, if you are gaurding and jamming down A... you're still just standing their gaurding. theres no penalty for doing so when you think they might grab you. (also if you're in a stun, BT, ect ect)

Best thing is to just recognize when your opponent throws out a grab, you'll get used to that pattern too

Some command grabs are more difficult to break on reaction, but it is possible (offline). Like niichts said you can also hold guard and mash throw breaks, but only one, not both.

It will come with (offline) experience, throw breaking is a really simple mechanic in this game compared to a game like VF, but it doesn't come overnight. Just keep at it, and like they said hit those throw breaks even if you're late, and pay attention to what throws they use. You'll improve at breaking throws (offline) the more you do it.

(online is trash.)

yea...i've actually train my eyes to see throw animations to attempt to break a throw. But unlike Tekken, this is simply just a guessing game.

Whateva throw my opponent is favoring is usually what I lean towards. Or whateva throw that rings out.

Guess you could say that I favor predicting. Although I would like to get used to doing it on reaction. I've been playing less Soul Calibur because I'm too busy trying to shut down all these Pats/Cowboys bandwagon whores in Madden.

If I'm in recovery of a move... I will hold guard and mash in throw breaks... just in case. If you listen to my joystick while I play, you will often hear me inputting in buttons while my character actually doesnt move... its because I am throw breaking.
