well the norm should be $5 for small/weekly type tourneys to gear up for the bigger $10-$20 monthlys or whatever tourneys.

if you actually care about the money from winning a tournament, i feel sorry for you

There are several games in which you can make a living/almost make a living off of by being good at them and playing extremely well and winning tournaments. If Soul Calibur is a tournament viable game, why not have that? I think every gamer would love it if every multiplayer, vs. game could be like StarCraft is over in Korea. You'd have the people who play the game for fun, and you'd have the people who play the game for money, just like with sports.

At most, having a high pot ensures that the drive to a tournament is worth it. Most people don't feel like driving long hours to fight competent players for a chance to win some money if there's not alot of money.

A high pot also makes sure that trash competitors don't make it into the tournament.

What would be good is if there were several levels of tourney play; a "free" tournament, an "intermediate" tournament, and an "expert" tournament with varying pots. The free tournament would obviously be free. The intermediate tournament could have a low entry fee, and 3 static, pots for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. That way, no one who's at "expert" level could head down to the intermediate for free money, it just wouldn't really be worth it. The expert tournament could have a pot that varies on how many people enter into it, with a fairly high entry free, and it cold be winner-take-all, to ensure more "serious" play.

that'd be great if there was more than a few hundred people (in NA) out there who would actually play in a tournament

Karl, you're a joke. You talk about supporting the scene and then back out because there isn't enough money in the pot. Just shut the fuck up please.

Keep saying that while you continue to hold tournaments for the 10 people who still play DOA.

Also I don't talk about supporting the scene. I talked about people playing the game but no one plays it so if no one plays the game then what scene is there to support? Exactly.

Pull your head out your ass.

Pretty much agree, $5 makes it so people of all skill levels can join in and experience a legit tournament setting. Jacking up the price will help out the top placers but it will screw over the newer people who need to get use to the pressure of a match with money on the line.

$5 is fine unless it's a major or extremely large tournament.

Most of the Michigan tournaments that I wanted to attend have 5 dollar entry fees so I don't go. If they were 10 I would show up but $5 dollars?

Please. Dont be a tool. I drive 2+ hours multiple times monthly to play and compete in the games I enjoy.

5/10/20 whatever. even free. its more about getting to hang with your friends, playing some games with the people you don't normally get to play.

If its the money youre after, why even show up. Pick up a few extra hours at work. You wont have to drive as far, and its guaranteed money as opposed to money you might not even win.

the real question is why complain about how much the entry fee is when you can't place in the money?
