Honestly I do tend to use my own creations once I'm out of story mode. Right now, I have 49 CAS characters, and one custom Sophitia I use for money in story mode, since my data corrupted itself a month ago. Before that I had all fifty slots used with my own. To give a general idea of what they represent, about 15 are "conversions"- characters from other games, anime, and such. The rest are my own designs, typically I'll make a character and give her two outfits.
A big part of me and my friends' online play is centered around CAS. We'll hold long matches just to show off everyone's newest creations, and even make characters related to characters the others have made, especially the conversions- Gilgamesh vs. Saber (Fate/Stay Night), Rukia vs. Just about the whole cast of Bleach, etc.
So for what it is, and who it's for, the casual players, it works despite all its flaws. But of course, there can never be enough options when it comes to customization, so the more depth they can add to it, the better. Personally I'd like if they make "guest" characters, instead of them being actual characters, make them outfits you can unlock. They already did that in either 2 or 3, for Kos Mos.
