Soul Calibur 5 Guest/Bonus/CAS Character Discussion

Why do I find Lightning distasteful?

It's a multi-layered question more complicated than "FF sucks" (Though I certainly believe that to be true).

What does a guest character bring to a game? Attention. My goal, or job, is to point that attention to learning the game instead of button mashing through story mode and playing dress up. That get's harder when the guests chosen to promote the game appeal to the pre-pubescent or mid-teenager set (10-15). Lighting falls right into that, as do most of the guest choices. They are all "cult of personality" kind of characters that appeal largely to a subset of fans who squeeeeeeee wildly over characters like they are real.

That makes my job harder, because instead of socially adjusted adults who buy the game because "oh neat a cool guest character" and I can speak to them on their level and introduce them to the wider world, the guest character instead attracts 10-15 year olds, or their mental/social equivalents. I'm not looking for the kind of character 14 year old girls who like anime draw in their sketchbooks. I'm not looking for the kind of character who people write fanfics about. I'm looking for a guest who appeals to the late teen-early 20 something subset, because generally that is the cut of people I find easiest to convince to actually learn how to play the game. Otherwise, not only is my job harder, but the board becomes flooded with people who want to have "who is better" style comic-book shop masturbation arguments; on what is essentially a dedicated competitive site for the Soul Series.

Hope that answers your question.

...I ask, since when has Final Fantasy "ever appealed" to the young'ins, when they're all getting boners over their "Call of Duty".

I did say mental and social equivalents, did I not?

You kind of get over FF as you get older. It's like a training wheels rpg (This opinion is separate from my point above, in case it needs clarification.)

Yet they still pull out installments when you're already in your 20's, and the kids are running down the street yelling "CARE PACKAGE OUT".

I cant help that. I'm sorry if it offends you, but the people that it appeals to generally are not the kind of people who value competition and skills beyond what you can grind out. Those are not the particular subset of people I'm looking for. By wider extenstion, neither are the anime subset of recent years (those weened on MOE's or shounen serials and mangas) or those raised on pulp action schlock games. I generally consider the mindset it appeals to, to be somewhat socially maladjusted.

Somebody has to fill the void that Taki left. Plus wouldn't it be cool to have another character with dramatic, half-health command throws?

I'm not offended, I was just wondering why you're so against someone like Lightning (who is perhaps the classiest form of fanservice this generation has).

The point is, as long the Guest is here only to push sales, Sephiroth &/or Cloud will get 10 times more $$$ than Lightning

To do a SC4 guests comparision

Darth Vader/Yoda = Sephiroth/Cloud <--- classic icons, even not fan know them, legion of diehard fans
Apprentice = Lightning <--- teh new thing, wich nobody will care 3-4 years from now

Hayabusa(NinjaGaiden/DoA)- is actually a good fit he wouldn't look out of place at all in SC, he could also potentially bring Ayane and/or Kasumi with him.

Anyone from Mortal Kombat(there are only a few 'iconic' characters for MK but since they all DO have weapon styles, any character could fit right into SC.)

Kuma from tekken-...and then suddenly a wild bear attacked!

A transformer-Silliness sure but not much sillier than having a star wars character.

Or for a blast from the past, Anyone from Legend of Dragoon(most likely Dart). How crazy would it be to see them either unleash some high powered magic or summon a dragon as their 'critical edge'? Besides how awesome would it be to see a character from LoD again?

Hayabusa is definantly a great fit, he actually wears ninja gear.
Kuma is another plus. There were rumors of Kuma appearing in SC5, it just might happen!

Now spongebob would sound silly as hell, but seriously Zelda. Actually I highly doubt that'd happen.

Once upon a time I would have gone nuts over the idea of Cloud and Sephiroth in SC. But then Squeenix (SQUARE IS DEAD, LONG LIVE SQUARE) released approximately 372 new FFVII-based... everythings, and their effect was rather blunted to say the least.

Realistically I’d counter with “why now?” Although I supposed that also counts for Star Wars, or Spawn, or whatever. Also, I’d point out that guest characters are a two-way street - the company that “lends” them would probably rather do it for promotion of its current games than for old games. Of course, either way they get money, so that’s a weak reason.

EDIT: Besides, for Sephiroth v Cloud you could always play Ergheiz. Speaking of 3D fighters. ;-)

lol Sephiroth and Cloud are overrated and old, while Lightning is the main poster girl of Squeenix right now, and would guarantee more than twice the sales (with FFXIII-2 coming out) if she is in SC.

As for FF characters, how about Gilgamesh? Duodecim confirms he travels between the various FFs through portals (read: the same way every other guest character arrives). Unique fighting style and excellent taunts.

And just for the lulz, the game would be canon for him.

Just to be clear: i DON'T hope to get Cloud/Sephiroth

I hope to get Ezio or Gabriel Belmont, because they will fit

It was just talking about $$$/marketing, and giant flying rotating LOL at "Lightning guarantee(loool) more than twice the sales"... twice? Not even half
Again, she's the thing of the moment but only who played FF13(and liked it) care about her, where S/C are potentially monster seller.
At recognization/impact/number of fans there is really no (i mean nonononono)comparision
Really, about popularity the proportion is the same of DartVader/Yoda>Apprentice
Only way they chose her can be to push the new thing

From somebody that is'nt even a FF7 or C/S fan, is just the reality

You know,Gilgamesh is one of the characters that i will like in SC and that will fit (just imagine Gilgamesh VS Yoshimitsu!)

Sadly the Guest logic is about give money,so i doubt

I think this has been analyzed pretty thoroughly by now.
  • Dante would be dumb. Too modern/supernatural IMHO. He has a sword... so what? So do tons of other characters. He just doesn’t look SC to me. To be honest I’m not sure why I think he’d be a bad choice, I just... the thought leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not compelling argument I know.
Does anyone else find this statement terribly funny? Supernatural? Nightmare/Taki/Cervantes/Ivy/Siegfried/Raphael/Astaroth/Lizardman Says hello.

  • SONIC!? WTF is wrong with whoever suggested Sonic? The idea is so far beyond laughable it isn’t even funny. A small cartoon anthropomorphic hedgehog with super speed, no weapons, and sticks for arms / legs. Why not Mario while you’re at it? Or Pikachu? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I loved Sonic 2, 3, & Knuckles but we’re talking about oil and water here. This isn’t Smash Brothers. Smash brothers is a fun game, but... listen, if I have to explain this to you, you’re probably not sane enough to get anyway, so I’ll stop trying.
Agreed. Nobody want's a damn Furry into a fighting game that's legit.
  • Crossovers from other fighting games such as BB don’t help draw in the non-FG masses (most FG fans will buy SC or not regardless of guests). I don’t have serious complaints about BB characters but neither am I ecstatic about them either. And seriously, Samurai Showdown &c.? The point of a guest is to be current-blockbuster / mainstream-recognizable, not FG-nostalgic. Even if I like the character designs for SS.

Lmao Samurai Showdown? Jesus I would rather jump on the Mario/Sonic/Lightning Bandwagon before I allow SS in this.
In the meantime, if Project Soul pulls a surprise on us and we get some left-field character... well, at least then we can all have a merry time arguing about how stupid/brilliant the decision is.
You mean when we argue about how the guest characters is really Dampierre and Shura? Boy that will be fun.

city-witch (1).jpg

How about this?^

Yeah, yeah, I know it doesn't match the argument made about promotion and stuff unless they were coming out with a Bullet Witch 2. The way she fights with the weapon when it's in melee mode fits soul calibur as well as her look. her firing her gun could be her critical edge. But I'm just throwing some bones and grasping straws here. I'm allowed to dream too.

I believe somebody threw out the idea of Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden being in the game.

It would make sense especially considering the massive amount of weapons he has (However he will be limited to the Dragon Sword).

He's a Ninja, He has good melee, Great swordplay skills, And has great juggles/Throws. I can see him or even Altair being in the game much more than FF imo. Besides how would you even Incorporate Lightning's Paradgims?

Bah I still stick with Vergil and Dante. They don't need bullets to juggle really seeing how you can reset most combo's with Beowulf >.> Just remove his DT, And have him use guns for his Critical Edge.

Hayabusa is from Tecmo a direct "enemie",another BeU SH... aside rare case (Capcom, wich is over this due holy awesomeness) usually they don't help each other

And for SC, Ezio>Altair any day
For way cooler and more SCish chara design
For fit more with it (Ezio=Renassaince, like SC. Altair=Holy Wars,500 years before SC)
For popularity, being more recent and in more games (was supposed to be one chapter like AC1,end up being liked so much for character/history background that end up a 3 games thing)

I really want a middle east character(just check my sign) in SCV, but still Ezio>>>Altair
