Harada has stated that there will never be DLC characters for Tekken, likening the character roster in a finished game to a set of chess pieces, where adding new pieces would upset the balance. This is SC5 of course, but seeing as SC5 inches closer and closer to being a Tekken clone I guess this DLC character policy could also spill over.
I do want to point out that this argument from Harada is complete horseshit, for two reasons:
1) The analogy being employed here is a total non-starter because you're stroking your own pole
pretty fucking hard if you think your fighting game is as balanced as chess.
2) The fighting games that do provide DLC characters usually do it pretty goddamn well. DLC characters for BlazBlue were very good, and the DLC characters for Mortal Kombat were actually not just better balanced in comparison to a lot of the launch roster, but just very well balanced in general (the latter just went to shit for a variety of different reasons). Just the two most recent examples I have off the top of my head.
Point being, if motherfucking
NetherRealm/Midway can release a pretty sizable amount of DLC characters and have it not totally destroy the goddamn game, Harada has a pretty embarrassing estimation of his development team.
The best balanced fighting games aren't the ones that try to have the roster balanced within itself. They're the ones that balance characters on an individual basis, making sure they can do what they're intended to do and do it well at that while not having a real bullshit factor. Anyway, balancing a fighting game isn't really rocket science despite how some developers talk about it; it's mostly common sense and competitive player input.
If they didn't plan for DLC characters, that means they can't do it. Which is disappointing, but fine. The game is alright for having it's development occur at break-neck pace. But this is a situation that needs at least
some manner of unfucking, by either releasing DLC characters/styles or just a simple statement via some asshole's Twitter feed about why doing so is impossible. Otherwise it just looks like they're content to sit and watch a lot of people grimace their way through a shit sandwich.
I'm having a really hard time believing they can't at least do DLC
styles though. DLC characters requires voice acting, tons of work for the art department, so on. DLC styles would be a lot simpler, and considering they churned out this current roster of almost 30 characters in
months and this game is very well balanced for it. Sure, they'd probably get banned at tournaments, but I'm having an even harder time believing that if the DLC wasn't broken/OP that the TOs couldn't take five minutes and put together some not terribad CaS designs for players to use. But whatever.
TL;DR, back to bitching about shitty DLC/bitching at or about people who bitch about shitty DLC.
EDIT:
You're welcome. We're perfectly okay with that. If they would bring out dlc characters, they could probably fund 4 or 5 patch updates, because I know a lot of people would pay big for that. A super version would be okay too. I don't like the notion, but I'd buy it anyway.
DLC SUPER VERSION! Like they did with SSFIV:AE only good and with characters people actually want.
