Guard Impact in Soul Calibur V

Guard Impact is a classic gameplay feature in the Soul series, going all the way back to the first Soul Edge. When GI was changed in Soul Calibur V, a lot of players dismissed it, citing the changed command and meter cost. This is a shame, as GI can be a powerful technique; arguably, more powerful than its previous iterations.

The proper use of Guard Impact not only leaves your opponent open to attack, but delivers a mental "shock" to the other player, disrupting their thought process and placing them in a state of confusion. Having GI in your defensive arsenal is a definite boon to your survivability. If you haven't learned how to use it by now, look into integrating it with your gameplay!

(Shout outs to Sp1d3r for discovering the GI-JG shown later in the video.)

Good stuff as always drake but I have a question. Is there any real reason not to GI then JG in expectance of critical edge?

No, there's no reason not to. If you get caught in the flash, you should probably throw out a G tap even if you don't think you can get it.

Of course, you have to be ready for multi-hit CEs, and have your punish ready as well. But no, there's no drawback to attempting JG after the flash, since if you don't you're going to get hit anyway.

If you're talking about inputting 4A+B+K~G on habit, I don't know about that, that may impede your response (like if you actually get a successful re-GI, you don't want to be fumbling over your G button instead of inputting your attack).

Wait wait wait wait, how did he JG after the GI? I thought you could only JG when you can regular guard.

I didn't bother explaining it, because I probably shouldn't even be showing it in a beginner tutorial. But, it's possible, and I wouldn't want people thinking that GI > CE is a completely unbeatable tactic, so I might as well mention it...

Thank you for this.

There have been so many people that complain about guard impacts in this iteration, not knowing how much more powerful they are now. Hell, I've even heard some complain that GI isn't even in this game.

Great stuff as always, Drake.

Ahh GI's, so underused! I really only use them to re-GI and that's it, but the few times I've thrown them out there and succeeded I've loved it.
Definitely a defensive option that more people should consider using. Burn that meter!

BUT DRAKE IT COSTS METER WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I H8 MANAGING METER BCUZ ITS DUM

Good video :)

PS: the reason GI~JG works has to do with the game having to allow G inputs in a potential post GI situation. If the game didn't allow this, you couldn't re-GI. So it's an "oops" on the part of programming. Definitely not intentional.

Another in the long and storied history of calibur g button glitches! At least this one isn't another vc. Good tutorial drake.

Study, study, study, study, study!!! Life is study! Just like studying this video. I knew delaying my offense would put tryhards in their place. No not the good tryhards, the bad tryhards.....wait I think I have a new scrub class to put in Sp1d3r's thread. xD

aGI's deserve their own category I believe, along with Revenge moves.

GI's are too stronk, heck with some characters (Algol), 1 GI can potentially mean 50% life gone.

With most characters, having at least 25% meter to spare post GI is immensely helpful, since most characters can get big damage off a clean hit with meter.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I do believe aGIs can't be re-GI'd.

Good article. :)

I always need to be reminded of GIs, especially with playing as Nightmare where meter usage is mostly for combos.

One question...

Regarding GI-ing things like Astaroth's 44[A], assuming GI has a 10 frame window and JG (with good execution) is around 6 or 7 frames, wouldn't it be more worth it to just practice JG-ing it for less meter?

Awesome video though, GI is something I definitely need to improve on.

I would think no.....

JG doesnt always give you the same advantage that a GI does. For example if you JG maxi's 6A+B, since that move is safe on block, max you will get is a BB punish.....

However.......

If you GI maxi's 6A+B, you have a much bigger window for a really big punish.

EDIT: As confirmed by Egg......answer is no LOL

I hope I explained that right. If not someone correct me

Okay. I was mostly thinking this. Wasn't sure if the possibility of getting re-GI'd overshadowed this though. Thanks
