Black Fighters get no love. :(
They are exaggerated (Zack), or skinned lighten to the point that their afro features are barely there and we end up playing the guessing game (DOA's Lisa, Christie Monteiro, arguably MK's Jade, VF's Vanessa, even though she really is African-American)

Seems all we have left who haven't gotten such treatment is Elena (cuddly Elena), Bruce Irvin, Raven, Eddy Gordo, Dee Jay, and....Tanya.

I thought Eddy & Christie Monteiro were Brazillian?? O_O
But I see what you are saying. It's a shame that black fighters aren't really included much in fighting games and if they are, they sometimes can be exaggerated (excluding Elena, Tanya, and Deejay). Tiger Jackson from Tekken is pretty cool though. :)

If I ever make my own fighting game, I'll be sure to create an authentic black fighter. I'm thinking a black girl with afro using capoiera. I would have her be reminiscent of the disco diva. And it's not a racism thing, I like disco and I liked the women who sang it. xD

Tina Turner?

Eddy is "Afro-Brazilian" and it is quite obvious.

Now Christie is the questionable one. For the most part we can just say that she's "Latin", and/or "Mulatto". Her skin changes from time to time. Her grandfather doesn't help either since his name is Korean.
Tina Turner?
Her hairstyles were far from an afro.

But needless to say in recent fighting games, and much of the media, dark skin is frowned upon, especially in female characters, but that's a totally different topic.

Zasalamel being dark skinned wasn't the reason of PS excluding him. Sure SC doesn't really have a dark skinned female (closest was filipino Talim), but am I bothered? Not really. The need to lighten their skin is what I'm bothered with (Vanessa & Christie Monteiro especially).

I had mostly been thinking of her legs. Those things could wrap around a bus, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't even have to do that little twist-thing to break your neck like Sophitia and Pyrrha, she could just give a squeeze and pop your head like an overripe grape.

Damn, what a way to die. It gets my heart all aflutter just thinking about it.

As for the rest of your statement, I have to agree, if it's with a rather heavy heart. What I don't get is why they lighten it at all; if they want to have sexy folks in their games, why not have some of everything? If they're different from what you're used to, more often than not, they come across as some kind of exotic figure to fawn over, which would make the roster, and by proxy the game, far more popular among many other groups of people.

I think they lighten up the skin to appeal to the American culture. Black people with dark skin seem to be frowned upon in real life. Being black myself, I was born with a lighter complexion while my brother was born with a darker one. y brother hates his dark complexion and wants to lighten it up. Some people would ask if we were related and there were other times where I heard darker people say they wish they had lighter skin. Even celebrity women who are black do it. Like Beyonce. She wasn't always that light skinned black girl. She had a fairly dark complexion before she started bleaching her skin.

I don't agree with it that the darker you are, the more "ugly" you are and it would be cool to see some fighting games bring in natural black women. There are only a handful of them.

Lightening up the skin is an international thing. Ask any country in Asia.

Apparently, Europe has brought such an impact to the world.

But of course this applies mainly to women. To men, it's less on skin and more on other things.

Yeah, I've heard of this thing applying to Asian countries too. Even India. It's sad really but this might be because I find all races as beautiful.

So...you look like me, basically? But more on topic, could you guys show examples of what you would want a African American Fighter to look like? I think this would be a great look. Danai Gurira is awesome.

I don't know what you mean by the first part but your example would be a good one.
For Soul Calibur, I think it would be cool to see a African American fighter on the guide route of Naomi Harris in The Pirates of the Caribbean.

I don't know, I loved the character in the movie. :)

She was more like a tribal sorceress/goddess from the Carribeans, or West Africa.

Not exactly "African American". Take out the American part.

It's more like she reads the wind around them to sense if they're good or evil or tainted with SE. She either says 'There's no wind around you" or "Winds are swirling" against malfested characters when you taunt them in SCIV.

So she basically has Eagle Vision like the Assassins do in Assassin's Creed. So I guess Ezio was meant to take her place; EVERYONE must appear "red" for him.

LOL, you just reminded me that about 80% of the roster is malfested or infected with evil (ex, Natsu). So yea, he's seeing alot of red in the Soul Calibur universe xD

Actually her skin is one of the most common around Brazil, actually you can find almost any heritage of people, so there is no solid Brazilian appearance, so she and Eddy are quite fine.

The Caribbean islands are part of the Americas. :P
Unfortunately, the society in the US doesn't label Caribbeans as "African Americans". Instead, they are named based off of the countries they were born and raised from (Jamaica=Jamaicans, for example).

Same reason why we don't label Eddy as an African American, given he's born in South America, or Brazil for that matter. People *cough* in the US *cough* like to differentiate African Americans from any other of the Afro descent. Sad, I know.

Hmm fair enough. But still, for a person of black descent, I'd love a character similar to the one I posted.
