Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

So she's a bad character?

No. Dumdums are explosive rounds.

So what I'm saying is, don't get hit by her. Ever.

Which you will not be able to avoid, because everything tracks and she has substantial advantage off of lows. And a fast OH which leaves you backturned against her. And she has a force tech ground stomp which pretty much never misses when timed properly during a juggle. And if it does miss, it actually gives her MORE advantage.

What I'm saying is.... I don't know what I'm saying. I'm going to let the community figure this one out.

I'm still going to main Rachel, but I guess now I've got to unlock her broken-ness! *holds up hands to the light* Yes!!

Funny when DOA5 first came out and my 2nd day playing I got caught in that Mila ground-n-pound infinite combo, it ended up timing out the whole round! I was so bitter... -__-;;

I like what I saw from DOA5U. Bought my copy before I went to work today. Can't wait to play it. Who else on the east coast is playing?

I'm getting this game this week. This is a very important question for me : should I get DOA5U on Xbox or PS3?

Xbox has the larger online community, though it is still small compared to most other fighting games. It also has slightly better performance in certain situations.

PS3 tends to be the tournament system however. This is more of a TO thing, as they seem to have a limitless number of PS3's on hand and rarely any extra 360's. If you can change controllers on the fly in a tournament setting, or have a good converter, I would go with 360.

Additionally, you can also opt to purchase the 360 version and download the free Core Fighters PS3 version along with your main character of choice for a few dollars. Then you have both.

Momiji's double jump stuff is gimmicky! And not even safe on hit.

That said, she does have a 12 frame track high kick in H+K. Wow is that fast and really strong. Her standing kick isn't bad either, +6 on hit.

She's only got 3 lows and they're fairly substandard, but they aren't too bad. 1P at least acts as a nice crush.

66PP is a natural combo... or at least it seems like it. Good launch too.

3P4PP seems like the standard combo finisher.

214P+K is slow, but deals a lot of damage (60).

Her HCF throw is 62 damage on normal hit. It's really good. On par with some other command throws (like Kokoro's 3-part throw).

66K, 236P, 8K, are some good launchers to work with. All fairly fast, 66K launches on CH and is very deceptive.

44P8 seems like her best reaching move for jump stances. Her basic jump stance is pretty easy to predict but it has natural combo in PK which also launches normally.

9K forces back-turn or a stumble stun. Unlike other characters who don't generally have follow ups here, Momiji does in fact have one with 66K.

7P is a pretty evasive jump back, but has recovery and can't really be spammed like Kasumi's.

7K is pretty fast too. But its unsafe on block.

Her mid kick hold and her low kick hold have guaranteed follow-ups. For her mid kick, 6PK works really well.

4K has good range, seems like a decent poke too.

214P and its follow ups are sorta weird for me right now. Not sure what to do with them yet.

Overall Momiji feels pretty strong, but not crazy good. She's got some good fakes and some modest damage her and there. She's really beginner friendly and not too mashy. I see a lot of players end up using her double-jump stuff and most of it isn't that good. It will hinder her once people know its coming and see the patterns.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that Kokoro is probably worse off now than in 1.03.
33P no longer stuns on normal hit
6P+K reverted to 1.0 state (no stun)
6P is still kinda sucky.
No new tracking moves.
Heichu throw got slower.

44P is really really slow. Only sabakis mid punches unlike 7P which sabakis all highs.

236P+KP is mid mid.

New sidestep move is 31 frames. Appears to be an old DOA4 move

It does look like, however, that she got a big boost in Tag-team friendliness. Might be a useful combo partner.

This is going to sound sketchy after I just got some ragging on Alpha, but Rachel is currently broken.

Now understand that when I say broken I don't mean simply "unbalanced to the point of unfairness" like most people use offhand. When I say broken here, I mean she is doing shit she was not meant to ever be able to do, and her force tech stomp mechanics are... doing interesting things as a result.

It's like discovering your box of 9mm have been replaced with dumdums.

And I don't mean the lollypops.
Do tell as I am already planning to main Rachel alongside Sarah.

I believe the big question is whether or not the F2P version will lead to an influx of new players.

all i gotta say,

FUCK RACHEL!

i thought momiji was the beginner friendly character according to what people were saying. i don't think they touched rachel. so much damage. the best ground hit move in the game hands down. and her combos are really easy to do but hurt a lot. i can't stand the woman.

But how can you hate somebody for being top tier. That's the most valid reason to do the opposite and like them.

I can't complain about Rachel after day 1. So far she looks silly though. Better use her until she gets fixed.

And I think the F2P version will bring in lots of players because it's free. It's a shame that there isn't a F2P version on the X360, but at least there's the opportunity for those to try the game out at least before dropping money on it.

So after putting the game in for a bit last night, I can give my impression of 5U's newbies/returning cast:

  • Momiji is probably my favorite of the new characters, although she doesn't feel like the strongest. If she can get someone who can use her to her absolute fullest, I will watch that player till the end of time.
  • Jacky is second, and feels the least VF of the VF characters. An absolute improvement over Jann Lee.
  • Leon is third. I see why people wanted him back. I might want to learn him to pair with Mila, get in time with Team Takedown.
  • Rachel is fourth. While I don't hate her, I don't enjoy using her. Still, she feels like a strong character, so we'll see what people can come up with at TFC.
  • Ein... was disappointing. I do not like using him at all. He's clunky, has awkward inputs, and just doesn't have the same energy as Hitomi. Still has the best Power Blow, though.
I also immediately plugged some time in with Mila, Brad, and Kokoro.
  • Mila feels... better. As if TN finally decided what they wanted her to do. Although I don't like that her SS Takedown is now SS~6T.
  • Brad doesn't feel too different, although seeing people slide across the ground after hitting them with a non-PB 4P+K is hilarious.
  • I never really noticed a difference with Kokoro either, but I never actually got any real fight time with her in vanilla 5.

I guess Rachel's already a prime candidate to get nerfed to Hell and back in the inevitable round of patches before things stabilize?

Looking forward to finding out what's changed with the characters I play tonight. Not looking to pick up any of the new ones.
