I'll not promise anything, but I'll give it a shot XD.
Damn it, that was close. I just hope I can grasp that last "w" with my new work.
Use reference pictures of things you like for source of inspiration for an OC.
Or think of something you'd love to see as a CAS, then do a quick brainstorming around it, like i sometimes do in my big corporation...this will not only help you assess if it is even doable, but help you immensely in nailing the right parts and effects for your CAS to be coherent and visually striking.
Use keywords to lay the foundation of your CAS design and the overall art direction like, if i take one of the CAS i am working on as an example (Hephaistos, not sure how he will turn up), but doing the prep work, i thought of :
- Muscular, big forearms
- Old
- Asta style
- Balding
- Hammer like weapon
- Flame effect / ornaments / vivid colors (orange, brown, red)
- Coal / Sweat / Stains (black)
- Apron
- No armor
- Chains
-...
Doing this iteratively, i guess this can be boiled down to a complete recipe, even though i usually go through this design process mentally as most trained CAS artists do...but not doing it can result in starting creating rather randomly and ending up working on something for 30 minutes to just end with saying, it is meh, seen that one before, and have you start over, which can be frustrating and disheartening for new artists i guess...
When you have created a wow-worthy CAS, one that will impress the whole community, you WILL KNOW, then i would strongly advise you try and take good pics of him/her, including in-game pics, and post all kinds of shots that will make him shine and exacerbate his/her soul and charisma...don't expect to wow me with any less than that, anyways :)
There is no try ! (Yoda)
If you want me to stick around, this wow! has to come from the next one you show...
Am i pushing you too hard, you be the judge of that :))
