Gamers and Hygiene: a subject relevant to all of us.

So, any of us that have been in or around any type of gaming community have likely at one point come across this situation: You’re at a gathering or tournament, and there’s someone around that smells and/or looks… less than fresh.

Obviously your course of action differs depending on the setting: if it’s a large scale tournament (basically, something not hosted by someone at their residence), there’s really not much you can do except move away from the offending person/people; unless of course you’re especially bold and have no qualms about calling someone out over their stench. What if it’s something smaller… something held at a private residence instead of a public venue? My question is this: if you have control over who attends the gathering, what do you do if someone walks in smelling like they spent the last three days sleeping in a dumpster?

I have people over at my place to get games in occasionally, so this is a subject I’ve mulled over from time to time. I’ve made it pretty clear before I invite people over that I expect them to be clean (larger gatherings I actually make a point to mention it plainly). I joke a lot that I have no problem denying entrance to offensive smelling people, but I’ve yet to actually encounter a situation where I’m faced with the decision to eject someone or not.

I think most people just opt to suffer in silence or move away from the person, which is the standard polite thing to do. I guess what I’m wondering is if you should really ask everyone else in attendance to put up with one person who couldn’t be bothered to freshen up before going out? I know that personally I am very sensitive to smells, and if an odor is strong enough I can start gagging and potentially vomit over it. I wonder; does the overall comfort of the group take priority over embarrassing one individual?

Smelly gamers, I think, have now become an expected pitfall of attending any type of community event. Although I’m sensitive to the fact that no one likes to be embarrassed on front of a bunch of people, I have to wonder what possesses people to consciously go out smelling like they rolled around in dog crap. I am in no way suggesting that unwashed gamers are the standard, but it comes up often enough that it’s a concern.

So, 8wr community, what say you?

I say you are awesome, and this post is win. People need to take a damn shower, or prepare to get called out.

ALWAYS call the person out on their stench. Go "Oh Geez man! You fucking reak! Take a shower next time!"... next time they will.

I can totally relate to this. It's pretty bad playing some SC Casuals and then you sniff something pungent and it makes you not want to play anymore

And yet you don't want to be mean and call out person out - they might not want to play against you anymore

This.

We're all fucking adults, not 6 year olds. We know we have to shower, use deodorant and all that jazz. So do it. No hand holding.

If you're going to a tournament and you're camping out in a hotel room and forget something.. fucking ask someone else. Better than smelling rank.

I once did that (what Jaxel said) to a really obnoxious old guy in a wheelchair who smelled like piss and sat next to me at a poker table at Harrah's in AC. Even though I was thrown out of the poker room for that evening, it'll make him think twice again before sitting down at a poker table without changing his Huggies first.

So, basically, gamer gatherings = anime conventions as far as the poor hygiene issue can be concerned. Rather sad if you ask me. I don't see how it's an impossible task to take a shower everyday or every other day at least. Nor do I see the immense difficulty on applying deodorant underneath your arm pits. The one anime convention I did go to, Katsu 08, I brought a can of Febreze with me and sprayed every person I walked passed or near if they smelt foul. I have no issue pointing out/telling someone they smell like shit. If they get embarrassed, good, take a fucking shower.

If I throw a tournament and someone smells like ass and armpits, they're gone. I'll gladly refund their entry fees or whatever else, but that's far too unhealthy and distracting for everyone else who took the time to clean themselves.

finally a topic revolving around what i call the gamer funk. while you would think it would be common knowledge for grown adults to practice basic i hygene that just doesn't happen sometimes. i have been to weekend events and seen people wearing the same clothes for 3 straight days

Yea, I have ejected ONE person ever for stinking my house up. He was a repeat offender too. I warned him discretely, pulled him aside as to not embarass him before he left the first time he was over.

But like an idiot, he smelled WORSE the second time, sat on my couch and stank IT up, so I asked him to leave. It was awkward, he was angry, but I won't tolerate that shit...

and neither should any of you.

Gamer gatherings and anime conventions should know better by now. Bathe or suffer the social embrassment and harrassment. You aren't a kid and you aren't a retard. Get with the program.

I just think people need to learn about wearing cologne or getting a good strong deodorant. :(

Oh God, please no. I think this is, quite possibly, the only thing that is worse than eau de garbage. Strong cologne on top of super gamer funk only compounds the problem. Bathing in cologne or perfume is not an acceptable substitute for a shower.

im still blown away that this is an actual problem! I dont get it when you know you havent showered today and your gonna be around people that might get a whiff of you. If I were invited to someones house that i didnt know and knew i was gonna be around a lot of people, i might consider other peoples noses. Have some respect for the person that invited you over not knowing if your a flaming homo (not that it makes you a bad person) a thief, a serial killer, etc. try to disguise it at least!!

I said wearing it not bathing in it.

And I meant strong deodorant. Like some unscented mitchum type shit. Or if that fails to help then going to the doctor.. they do have prescription strength stuff. Or they could be like me and use Drysol on the underarms and knock out the sweat altogether.

I try to ignore the smelly people. n_n;
But even if they do smell,I don't think I could ever tell THE person that stinks that they stink.
