I've been watching various comedy shows for years, mostly British and American sitcoms.
For my best three pics atm, I'd say:
1. Community
2. Arrested Development
3. 'Allo 'Allo tied with 3rd Rock from the Sun

Anyone has other top choices?

EDIT
as for animated ones, I'd say for now:
1. south park
2. drawn together
3. archer
But I will be honest, I havent seen many must-see titles like futurama etc, so Im not very knowledgeable here. yet.

One thing I've never been able to get my head around is how Big Bang Theory is so popular...
I can only say for myself, I enjoy BBT, because of its tribute to geekiness. Video games, comics, reformatting hard drives as a leisure activity, social awkwardness, RPG - its all part of my youth in one way or another

I despise the laughing track/audience though

You can get all of that from The IT Crowd, but with actual jokes ;D

I dunno, from what I've seen, I feel like BBT has a tendency to mock geek culture, rather than celebrate it in the same way that shows such as Community and The IT Crowd do. And if you are gonna mock it, at least do it in a sharp and funny way like Futurama does. It just feels like lazy humour when all they do is shoehorn tenuous references to geek culture without even constructing jokes.

I despise the laughing track/audience though
Same, but I think it might be kinda necessary. If you remove the laugh track you realise just how not funny the show is:

(apologies to any BBT fans)

I must agree, removing laugh track removes almost all of its humor ;)
But to be fair, You used a clip without sheldon, and we all know he carries the show.
I guess, what IT crowd lacks is incorporating ridiculous 'scientific' talk into everyday conversations.
From that standpoint, BBT is actually well written, in that it takes some skill to script conversations like sheldon's and leonard's.

But tbh, I havent watched IT crowd in full yet. Also yeah, community, but I already declared community to be the best show evar, so there you go. As for futurama, I would consider talking about animated comedy shows as a separate category, since lack of human actors and influence of animation style make the comparison unfair if not impossible.

I have yet to watch futurama in its entirety. I only watched like first couple of episodes. It did not amuse me so much, but since it gets so much praise, I will give it another shot. From what Ive seen up to this point though,
South Park & Archer & Drawn Together > Futurama

On a separate note, the laugh track.

First I thought its all artificial.
Then, I remember clearly when I was young and watching married with children, when Al Bundy stood up from the couch and approached the actual audience, I learned that at least some shows are theater-like.
So, Is there a way to tell whether there is in fact audience or is the laugh track prerecorded for?
I wonder whether BBT or IT crowd have prerecorded tracks or are acted in front of people

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air!

1. Seinfeld
2. Married with Children
3. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Two and a half men when Charlie Sheen was on it
Always Sunny in Philadelphia
My name is Earl
Doogie Howser M.D

Also, would any animated sitcoms count?

Yeah sure, but I would put animated series in a separate category with separate 'best three', since
with live sitcoms you have additional elements that influence overall score, like chemistry, charisma and nonverbal interaction between actors. So give us Your best animated shot.

Also, sunny in philly and seinfeld definitely yes, but doogie howser MD? really? ;)

"I'm working on a 4rth dimension"

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Concerning 'curb your enthusiasm',
can someone explain to me the appeal and the funny in it?
I watched two whole seasons and gave up. Its not funny at all, I almost cringe watching every episode.
Cant understand the hype around it

Don't mean to sound rude, but that is the most random top 3 ever lol. Curb's intention is to make your cringe, pretty much like Office. Anways all your choices suck because not one person mentioned The Simpsons, which is the Godfather of comedies.

My All time top show: The Simpsons, Arrested Development, Curb your Enthusiasm, Friends, Frasier, Seinfeld, The Office, Peep Show. Probably missed some big ones but that's off the top of my head.

Current: Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Archer, Nathan for you.

In no particular order...
Live action:
  1. Seinfeld - excellent main cast, great side characters, references live on even 10+ years after it aired
  2. Arrested Development - inspired goofiness, great story arcs, effective quick hits of blue humor
  3. 3rd Rock from the Sun - off-the-top goofiness with even more over-the-top acting from John Lithgow
  4. Better Off Ted - a short-lived lampooning of corporate America, great goofiness and effective breaking of the fourth wall. A lost gem in my opinion.
  5. All in the Family - not strictly a comedy per se, but still one of the best. Great cast, and excellent writing that tackled heavy subjects with sensitivity, honesty and humor. It took risks that no modern show (that I am aware of) would.
Animated:
  1. The Simpsons - the earlier stuff. This show has been dead to me for the last few seasons.
  2. Futurama - goofy sometimes-gross, sci-fi humor that won me over quick. Loved the heads in jars concept to bring in cameos.
  3. King of the Hill - a well-written show with great characters. I was surprised and happy it ran as long as it did.

+1 for Friends and Seinfield.

They definitely deserve to be in the top 3.
