Aesthetics in player choice

I have always picked my characters based on the way they look regardless of tier. I just tell my self that "shit, I'll make them good" Somehow if a character doesn't look cool to me I don't like playing them.

unfortunately this has over the years lead me to play some pretty bad characters in some games completely missing out on the great ones. meh.

Was wondering how much weight other people give to "looks" in general. lol based off of CASs I'd venture to guess quite a bit.

I stopped playing tira in sc4 cuz her sc3 looks that much better. lame i know but hey. Eye candy is important to me.

Looks can be a factor in character choice, but how I chose my characters was based more on their fighting style and which felt comfortable to me. Besides, most everyone in SC4 looks awesome anyway.

It can be an initial factor, sure, but particularly in Soul Calibur where the weapon matters, it's not really an issue in the long run. I will say that certain costumes motivate me more than others at certain times, though, so picking the wrong costume can actually impact my gameplay.

I tend to drift towards female characters in fighting games, just because I like having something pretty to look at.

That said, this game is sort of a toss-up for me, aesthetically. I like Kilik and Hilde's designs (Kilik's SC2 outfit was the best one, IMO, and Hilde's armor is generic aside from the wolf motif and retractable visor), but I hate Setsuka and Yoshimitsu's designs with a passion.

back when sc1 came out, i had just started my bujinkan training and i was obssesed with the knunchuku. therefore maxi became an instant hit for me. I havent really played anyone else since then until recently i picked up yoshi. I do play a little taki as well. I love the ninja type characters!

...Uh.

I typically don't care much about esthetics.

What comes in first position is the rarity and reputation of the character...

("Setsuka is LEIK OMG SO HAAARD 2 PLAY CUZ OF LEIK HER JF AND... STUFF!") (+!!!)
("I'll never understand why people play Rock... /ragequit") (+!)
("Maxi is so easy to beat only noobs pick him...") (+)

...And then it depends on whether I feel that I can do something with the character, or if it's hopeless.
I pretty much stopped playing Setsuka because I'm not able to do any miracles with her...
Same for Rock.

I stay away from the sisters, Asura, Siegfried, Cervantes, Amy, Mitsurugi and the motherfucker. (Voldo.)
So I'm certainly not "missing out" on the best characters... I'm missing out on additional rare characters like Seong Mina, Tira and Talim because I'm hopeless with them.

...Eh, these three quotes were supposed to repeat what people generally think about them... None of these are my opinion.

GynormousFish- this is one of the reason why I like SC so much. Your right, most everyone looks great. play style can be a problem but I just figure, this is what i have to learn. Winning w/ style is the best.

Organous- So true! sometimes i'll pick Sophie in a hurry and end up as her 2nd player outfit and i get immediately bummed out. it *can* effect the way i play.

KingZeal- feel you on this. I drift towards female players as well. I play nightmare but I really don't like the way he looks in this game. Made a female verson of him. Hollar if you've ran into my "Liz Vicious" lol

lol, at the end of the day you'll never see me pick Blanka or Honda. yeah I know its a different universe.

Plume- so you'll play someone regarless of playstyle if they are rarely played or unpopular? I think in a sense we're on the same page. Playstyle comes 2nd to our other personal concerns.

Actually Hilde is my one exception. I think she look amazing the way she stands holding that spear. I've tried playing as her and I SUCK bad w/ her. but i guess theres an exception to every rule...

LMAO, True.

Well in a way, Most people are like that. Especially when it's someones first time playing Soul Calibur. It's only human instinct that your first choice would be a character that appeals to you. XD. I was like that too.

I care about the weapon, how they use it, and if I can use them =D
:sc2mit3: Because he has what I see as a "normal" weapon
:sc3zas1: Because... well cmon, its a scythe!

Would like to try Ivy :sc2ivy3:, but all of those stances make me dizy

For me is a combination of character design and story.

I must relate storywise to a character, their motivations and stuff like that. Otherwise is a no go.

Yeah, strange but whatever.

I wholeheartedly agree. I think the only male character I've ever played in a fighting game was Kazuya in Tekken 2, his shiny lightning moves was just badass

Also i feel like that i need to have a "connection" with that character. You know... that it just makes it feels right to be playing them. I must sound like a crazy person haha

I dont think the character's outfit is as important as to their fluidity in animation/movement.

I thought raphael would be a "ken" to mitsurugi. Got interested once i read he could auto evade (and got hooked when i actually saw it).

Sad that they took it away though
