This is definitely my favorite of the Marvel Studios films, and is miles ahead of most other solo hero outings from both Phase 1 and 2.
All the characters have come such a long way from their original appearances. The most obvious would be Black Widow, who went from an excuse for whootie on latex in Iron Man 2 to a sassy, sarcastic, and just overall enjoyable character, all while remaining a total badass. Likewise, Nick Fury has never felt so real; I often found myself caring more about him than Captain America. The only character that I found bland was Falcon, mostly because he just felt like an excuse to stick the a black guy in the last action scene.
The flow of the movie is incredibly smooth; not once did I find myself wishing for an explanation or for more action. And speaking of action, the fight scenes are by far the best choreographed in the entire Avengers series, with the pirate overtake and the final battle having an almost videogame vibe to them. The humor was also perfectly executed, not being obtrusive like in Iron Man 3 or excessive like in Thor 2.
I also found the theme of liberty vs security to be incredibly appropriate and relevant to the current NSA debate, if not a bit overdone with the whole Nazi comparison.
If you haven't already seen this movie, just go watch it. Like, now.
