Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

i feel the same way. i've never really been motivated to learn her, then again i only use christie.

I dunno guys. Hitomi's close range pressure, 6T, 1P, 9H, easily accessed pseudo-Forced Techs, brutal whiff punishers and incredible wall damage make her pretty solid. Her crush game is ok (though Rig's is terrible) with 1P, 2P+K, 3P & 33P for highs and 3H+K and 8H+K for lows. She doesn't have any true weaknesses so it wouldn't make sense for her to be considered Lower Tier despite her having to work for guaranteed damage if she isn't near a wall.

However, I do concur that something about her just seems to keep her from being an Upper Tier character. I think she needs some nonsense like JAK to boost her to the top lol. But I play Ayane so what do I know?? I'm too accustomed to getting launch combos off of almost anything lol.

From what little I can tell, it seems to be that she's missing the 'bullshit factor' that appears in the higher tiers. Ayane's launchers, Sarah's safety, Lei Fang's sabaki, Jann Lee's... well, lots about him *coughDGcomboscough*, Christie's JAK, Helena's PFTs, etc.

To be fair, you could say her damage output is enough, being one of the better ones in the cast. This is Rig's saving grace, too. His Bending mixups and overall strike damage are ridiculous, but his holds and throws are bad. All of them have low damage and bad follow-ups aside from his 180T.

Although with 5U's supposed throw/hold damage buffs, we may be seeing Rig's rise to glory.

THIS!

guys. i got one thing to say. and i believe the japanese would agree but ummm...

FUCK TIERS!
if you're good with a character then you are good with a character but that's only being part of the way there when it comes to being a pro/master at a game. the other part is knowing the game itself. how the game works. what can you can slow escape out of. when throw punishes can happen. what combos can you do to maximize damage output when the opponent who's back was facing a wall, is launched. the japanese (using them as an example because they are the ones that do this most commonly) will go to a tournament and pick what the american meta has condemned as "low tier" and whoop on everyone else and their "high tier" characters. i've watched this happen in darn near every fighting game that makes it to tourneys. didn't eliot just win a tournament and that dude was considered low tier?

what i'm saying is that if you glue yourself to a tier list then you are bound to not achieve the feats that you are capable of. you have a character that stands out to you in the cast. you like that character. you like how they play. so what if they have a lack of one thing or the other. in DOA5 they normally have something to compensate for that. so don't drop the character who may require a bit more knowledge and skill to win with. if you go into a tournament with that character (unless you are already an established douche) guess who that crowd will most likely be cheering for. crowds LOVE underdogs. they like seeing these "low tiers" come out on top. proving that tiers don't matter. it's down to player skill, memory, reflex, adaptation, and knowledge.

Of course. Skill triumphs overall.

But I do like to analyze things. So that's why I do it. I don't really care if the character is weak or not. It won't really stop me from playing them. Even if they are outrageously overpowered.

overpowered or under powered? but analyzing is just one of the steps to making you a better player. oh and that post wasn't aimed at you specifically. i just saw several gameplay videos of so called low tiers doing really good and even winning most matches. it just so happened that the Japanese was behind the controller of darn near every "low tier" and even the commentators were discussing it. so it just got me to thinkin'.

I honestly just play whoever looks fun. I chose Ayane in DOA5 because I can entertain myself endlessly with her just by spinning around endlessly in the lab and messing around with her "LOSER!" taunt. Plus TN slapped some purple hair on her and I was sold!

In SCV I chose Natsu because I can never get tired of bombing scrubs into a oblivion and raking in the hate mail soon after. If that wasn't enough, I took up Nightmare and his 236B and 1A of Doom. Don't care where these characters are in the tier lists, they're fun to use and never bore me like Mitsurugi.

What I hate though are Tier whores who only play the top tier characters and jump ship the second that their character is nerfed (I.e. people that went from Leixia to Viola after 1.02).

As for DOA, the game is designed in a manner that even the prescribed "low-tiers" can beat anyone as long as there are superior fundamentals or yomi used.

Honestly, I've never really paid too much heed to tiers anyways. I don't have fun with Helena/JL/Lei Fang/etc.

What do I have fun doing? Deathfists, takedowns, tetsuzankos, handstanding launchers to air throws, with a side of luchador wall shenanigans.

I won't pretend that there are not some horrid match-ups, though.

Honestly i am paying some attention to the Tier List..not beacuse of my pick for a character.
Its only to learn why the matchups are so Bad/Good...like rog vs chun, sim vs ryu or hakumen vs nu
(i could go on and on) etc etc...
I know very well what you mean vincent....but somehow what xemuht psted was true to itself to with that
'bullshit factor'.
We are living in a gen who almost many online warriors tend to use the troll/newbie friendly characters...
(yeah im looking at you Injustice!)
And some of them are crying for some balance..like in this link...

Between..nice comment from Tn(lolz)
But on the other hand..some people really like the character they use..and not beacuse of his Tier Status...Hell!
Even i have fun with E.Ryu(sf4)/Alpha pat(sc) or Mitsuru/Aegis(P4arena)...
Hope this discussion will go on a lil bit..its really interesting to read the different opinions =)
...you can nerf the character but never the player...nuff`said..

Well, the bullshit factor defines the highest tiers of ANY fighter.

Your mention of using tiers as a means to judge matchups is what SHOULD happen in an ideal FGC. People pick the characters they like using, then go into the fight and do their best. Knowing what tools work well against your enemy and what ones are trash is good to know. However, with all the prize money floating around, there will be people who just pick a character with 70% good matchups because they have them, like Justin Wong in SF, or the sudden wave of Jann Lee and Helena players in DOA5 once the tourney scene started picking up.

I usually use match-up info to learn what my character does well. Unfortunately, with Mila, I couldn't figure it out myself. I knew she had solid matchups, and her takedown mixups are supposed to be good, but I couldn't figure out how it was good. With Brad and Kokoro, I know what they can do (mixups galore and rushdown with throw mixups) and I know roughly who can blow them up (mostly Christie). Aside from that, I really enjoy them, and I need nothing else.

Aside from memorizing combos.

Lots of new move stuff here. Very impressed. Game looks a little slower and seems like some stuff is a little more punishable now, so the risk vs. reward might be a little more even. Then again, its offline gameplay and that doesn't always translate well in online situations.
