That is quite a reach. People will act a lot more different in person. People may rib on you a bit in person, but it's expected that everyone have at least half as thick a skin as their "online" persona.

Because it's a) fun, and b) very lucrative in terms of effort vs. self-validation. It's so easy to take part in a nice, little online argument, forget about it for a while and come back and enjoy the results.
