There is one tournament in the UK these days and that is EMS, which makes it THE UK tournament to be at. Our small but surprisingly talented pool of players gathered again to defend our shores against the influx of foreigners. The last few years we have had international representation but none as skilled and experienced as the five that came over this time:
Keev
Gold Shad
Lolo
Deus Kaliya
Maxou
These five in addition to a young, hungry crop of UK players made this one of the more stacked tournaments that the EU has seen even with the modest number of players at 22. Quality over quantity, right?
Edge Master Series Major 2015 Solo - Challonge (http://emsm2015.challonge.com/Solo)
There I have left the bracket. Top 4 progressed from each group and everything went to plan as the top seeds finished in the first and second spots with no much of a hiccup for them. The biggest upset being Andyroo using ZWEI to his potential and managing a 3-1 victory over Maxou's Voldo. (A victory for low tier specialists everywhere)
TOP 24
Into the double elimination we go and once again......everything goes the way of the seeds (Well almost).
WolfLoneThe vs Rudeboy 3-0
We have played online many times before so I know his style and stuff. I was also playing casuals vs Lolo before the tournament so I was ready. (In addition to my "nap" beforehand, the photo is on fb somewhere)
Hyrul vs Zer0 3-0
Tira vs NM. Veteran vs Newcomer. Shining Hyrul takes the set, crushing new players and sending them into loser's bracket with no remorse.
Maxou vs HolyCarp 3-1
HE CHOSE CERVANTES. HolyCarp chooses the backstepping captain as a counterpick to Maxou's Voldo. Unfortunately he couldn't backstep his way to victory although Maxou was impressed by the magnitude of his reads (or ignorance, your choice)
Gold Shad vs Sotiris 3-1
Sotiris doesn't even play this game. Maybe 1 hour since the last EMS and that might be pushing it. Yet he manages to take a game off one of the top seeds. Shad sees himself through without too many problems and takes the set.
Andyroo vs Deus Kaliya 3-1
Andy and ZWEI do it again. Low tier, who? Andyroo holds his nerve against the French contender and forces through his section of the bracket. The question beckons: Does anyone know ZWEI? Even if they do......Can they beat Andyroo?
Zanaken vs Keev 1-3
Is playing characters at two ends of the tier list like playing football with ankle weights then taking them off? Did Keev listen to any of Zanaken's inevitable advice? Did he care? Find out next time on Dragonballll ZZZZ
Chin vs Lolo 0-3
I actually missed this match unfortunately but Lolo has nerves of steel in tournament setting so I can imagine he was quite comfortable throughout. Unfortunate drawing for Bushy but solid Ivy.
SsyluS vs Silent Joel 3-1
Cervantes vs Cervantes. Backstep vs backstep. aB vs aB. Former online warrior SsyluS takes the set vs Silent Joel at his first tournament(I think). I've never seen so many missed idgrs though lol.
Loser's bracket sports no upsets with Rudeboy, HolyCarp, Deus Kaliya and Silent Joel making their way through.
Top 16
WolfLoneThe vs Hyrul 3-0
Someone I have played countless amounts of matches against. The first match was critical. 2-2 on the raft, my guard gauge flashing red, Hyrul on the offence AND in gloomy. I step to avoid being guard broken, I get hit by 66A. I stand up, continue to step, once again get hit by 66A. I get up, step and see a 66B whiff. YESSSSSSSSSS. I start up Pat's BS, take the game and eventually the set.
Maxou vs Gold Shad 0-3
Make no mistake, this match was not as one sided as the end result would have you believe. I feel like I've seen this match played many times throughout the year and they can literally go either way. 2A CE came in clutch for Shad in the first two games and a failed RO combo from Maxou allowed Gold Shad to JF his way through the bracket.
Andyroo vs Keev 0-3
Andy and ZWEI's run was bound to end at some point (no offence) with the kind of talent and top tier characters awaiting him in top 8. You could have asked for no one worse than Keev, riding high from a tournament win at LVB and Cervantes, riding high from iDGR. Hopefully a hidden JF low is found for ZWEI, give him something to be happy about.
Lolo vs SsyluS 3-0
SsyluS, one of the surprises of the top 8 winner's bracket, comes up against one of the favourites for the tournament. Very competitive first 2 games with Lolo edging them out before convincingly taking the last. Even though it was 3-0, I don't think SsyluS can be too disappointed.
Loser's bracket follows recent events and the favourites progress. SsyluS instead of Rudeboy, HolyCarp instead of Andyroo, Maxou instead of Deus and Hyrul of Silent Joel.
Top 8
Top 8, the holy grail of fighting game tournaments. If you don't make top 8, you don't even mention your placement. This is where the tournament gets truly interesting. Who will hold their nerve? Who will upset the top seeds? Who will peak at the right time?
WolfLoneThe vs Gold Shad 0-3
Absolutely bodied, no way around it. I let the nerves get to me and refused to crouch. I can't really even blame the nerves for the loss as Shad has been beating me a lot recently, this match literally rejuvenated my interest in the game. I don't mind losing against a top player if the match is close and I've done all I can to win but being merked in this manner is not acceptable.
Keev vs Lolo 3-2
Match of the tournament imo. Keev 'Captain Clutch' Rayne brings it all the way back from 2 games down and takes the set, you just can't count this man out EVER. Lolo playing his usual way, making those serious reads like a scholar and making things look effortless, maybe too effortless. You guys all play this game, you know how momentum can completely turn a game around and that is exactly what happened here.
I'm not sure how many times I can write this but NO UPSETS IN LOSER'S BRACKET. HolyCarp advances in a close match with SsyluS while Maxou progresses over Hyrul.
Top 4
If top 8 is the holy grail then top 4 must be the fountain of youth. You've either used up all your best gimmicks by now or you are saving them for this point. Prime your i30, onlyworkswhentheopponentisfeelingtournamentnerves unblockable because.........you're gonna need it to beat the monsters that lurk ahead.
Winner's Final
Gold Shad vs Keev 2-3
I think these guys have played the game before. Captain Keev continues to swipe aside any opposition that he faces and he leaps into Grand Finals over fierce, French rival Gold Shad. Probably the most animated I've seen Shad while playing as the mind games progressed thick and fast between the two. Thoroughly enjoyable match to watch as Keev's defence vs Shad's offence took centre stage(no literal stage unfortunately lol). Think of the unmovable object vs the unstoppable force.
Loser's bracket action as the top UK players fight for top spot on the glorified UK ranking pyramid:
WolfLoneThe vs HolyCarp 3-2
I maintain my status as UK no1 (Such arrogance lol) in a Greek MU littered with controller errors as I had unknowingly picked up Joel's fresh pad.(I can't play on with any d-pad that isn't thoroughly worn in for whatever reason). That aside, we have played many times and the matches showed this. Very close, we have similar styles of playing which gives me more trouble than any other.
Lolo vs Maxou 0-3
Elsewhere two foreign killers came together to fight to the death for their tournament survival. The fact that Maxou won isn't much of a surprise as he's very good, the 3-0 is what is surprising to me. Even Lolo switching to Astaroth wasn't enough to save him from Maxou's savage Voldo as he progresses.
WolfLoneThe vs Maxou 2-3
Another casualty at the hands of Voldo. A rematch of a group game where Maxou's Voldo also won 3-2 and I hope both matches were as entertaining to watch as they were to play. That BS SS JGing is absolutely OP, you know when you have to use 1A as a last resort to stop something, that the tool is biblically good. I'm going to need to need to get my revenge at some point soooooo look out for me.
Loser's Finals
Gold Shad vs Maxou 2-3
If anyone watched the French tournament LVB, this is exactly what happened there too. Keev knocks Shad into loser's finals vs Maxou and Maxou advances into GF. I mentioned before that games between these two can go either way and from the 3-0 to Gold Shad earlier to 3-2 here, not much has changed. The games were still ultra competitive, super close but Maxou edges it when he needs it.
Grand Finals
Keev vs Maxou 3-2
Keev makes it back to back tournament wins, call him Drake, with a win over his fellow Frenchman and winning that massive pot of like £50. Even with this loss, Maxou still ranks as my MVP for the tournament with his impressive run through loser's bracket. Of course congratulations to Keev for his win maintaining his position at the top of the EU player pool. Can Keev go to NEC and make it the WORLD player pool? This is a question that I and many others can;t wait to see.
Congrats to the French for coming over and dominating, Lolo for showing us a unique and awesome way of playing the game, UK for upping our average level to rival any EU scene and nice to see that people are still playing for the love of the game and having fun with it.
