grapple range

I've been wondering about grapple range, and if there is any solid information out there regarding it. Everything I've found so far has been inconsistent and somewhat sketchy. Anyone want to run some tests? If not, who would be a good character for me to test grapple range on?

Nightmare's stance makes him a bitch to grab even when you are literally touching.

It's dependent on both the character used (Different grab ranges + tracking), and the opponent's hitbox: Hilde's an uppity bitch, so it feels like you have to be breast to breast to grab her sometimes.... at least, it does for me.

Its seems that the general consensus is that Astaroth has the greatest throw range, followed by Nightmare and Siegfried.

There were some scenarios in old CF.com that showed the best throwing range.

I remember that Rock came on top there edging Astaroth. (Don't remember the scenario, I think it was punishing some Yunsung setups with Rock landing standing throws while Astaroth couldn't)

The best throw range AFAIR are Rock, Astaroth, Nightmare, Ivy's SS and JF CS, Anakin, Siegfried and Tira.

I can tell you right now that Lizzy has the shortest little t-rex arms and can't throw you unless you are giving him a hug.

Apprentice has some range issues too, not because his arms are short but because his stance keeps your hitbox away from him.

Ivy's JF CS sucks you in from like a good 1.5 character lengths, probably a bit more.

On the other side of the spectrum, add Algol to the list of characters with a small throw range.

For some reason or another, Nightmare inherited the X grab of doom.

His grab range is a littile longer then his claw, so he can get grabs not even touching his enemies.

Lol yeah. Ivy sticks her hand out and I come sliding across the floor. Tira and Nightmare definitely has good grab grange. I hear The Apprentice has horrible grab range. Wasn't there like a character repot card kind of thing somewhere that included grab range?

I'm always amazed at Ivy's CS range. I often throw it thinking I fully whiffed and watch in glee as my panicked Gi attempt is negated by my opponent flying through the air with blades stabbing the crap out of them. always great way to finish and then crotch stomp for added humiliation. Also, Ivy's SS can allow you to do nearly 2 full steps forward before you finish the animation making it absurdly good for closing space and then throwing out the long reach n top of it. Simply that fact alone makes her the most dangerous thrower in the game.

Nightmares and Seigs throw range is a load of shit i tell you....

at least with Ics you have to WORK to get that out

Agreed. Nothing more irritating than watching them do a low grab, thinking your fully out of range, and suddenly they grab nothing but air and still flip your ass silly...1.04 patch please? The range is one issue...now I have to deal with the animation not matching the range so it's a giant guessing game of range?!?

Once again iCS and SS have to be worked for and at least you see the tip connect. Nightmare and Sieg have fucked up animations.

Flapjack and overtoss are already shittier than they should be. They are i22, whereas a regular grapple is i17. They can be broken like a regular grapple, and they do less damage than any other grapples in the game (Setsuka and Cassandra can combo off theirs, I believe?), especially Ivy's grapples, which basically give the Ivy a free battle. Even after getting the wall hit from FC 2B+G, a back grapple still does less damage than iCS. Breaking them is a simple matter, and people do it all the time, even online. They can also be blocked simply by ducking. Ivy's, however, can be very hard to break in local, let alone duck.

Yes, but those two grapples have insane RO potential

Insane? No. You have to be at the edge for the A throws to ring you out, and the B throw is only slightly better for reverse ROs.

Truth.

Though I just love overtoss to wallsplat to back throw, there just aren't many times to use it.

Really, you hit someone with those, it's more for psychological effect. :|

i love NM's throw range, makes people think twice before rushing him down haha, but the reason why sometimes you see him grab people out of thin air is probably due to the throw move eating/overwriting people's moves.

Just a heads up, I'm going to do a comparison of every characters grab range soon (Maybe a tier list, or something). I might make a new thread for it, just so it can be stickied for the sake of convenience.

Edit: I've got something here, but it's very rough. If somebody can come up with a concrete way of testing (I based it off of the distance of their hitboxes against Hilde), then I'd love to hear it.

A: Asty, Rock, Nighty, Yoda

B: Sieg, Vadar

C: Setsuka, Mitsu (Maybe), Hilde, Tira, Yoshi, Maxi, Cassie

D: Shura, Cervie, Sophie, Taki, Kilik, Voldo, X, Raph, Ivy*, Yun, Talim, Scheherewhateverthefuck, Some black dude

Fail: Starkiller, Lizzy, Amy, all the remaining bonus characters, Algol, Mi-na

*Not counting CS and SS, of course.

Also, the difference between C and D is pretty small. There's a bigger gap between A v B, B v C, and D v Fail.

Yoshi's throw range is fairly long. You'll find it's longer than Sets. Likely in either category B or between B and C.
