Hate Speech: The Best Laid Plans...

As I write this, the tail end of the NEC-XII Soulcalibur V exhibition is streaming on my computer. My initial plan was to be there in the thick of things, but I’ve been sick enough that I’ve barely managed to stagger out of bed for the last few days. So it goes…

In any case, the war report I’d hoped to give you guys ain’t happening. On the plus side, we got to see plenty of SC5 action and we’re going to have lots of information coming our way thanks to Bibulus’ interview with Daishi, but where does that leave an intrepid columnist who wants to talk about something topical? Well, in the spirit of making the best of a bad situation, I present the following eclectic series of thoughts for your reading pleasure.

NEC: A Hands-Off Perspective

1) Woahzz is pretty darn good at SC4. As a whole, though, the game has really lost a lot of its luster, and I’m finding it difficult to get invested in tournament outcomes. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; in fact, it’s mostly due to how tantalizing SC5 looks.

2) Despite my tepid reaction to singles and random teams, I still found North America vs. Europe to be interesting. Yes, this is largely because I’m a proud, jingoistic Real American, but I also think there’s actual potential in the notion of assembling larger teams and having them square off. I’d like for tournament organizers to take a look at the possibilities therein—these sorts of challenges can lead to very exciting stuff.

Behold lolo, the Mexican savior of America, in all his terrible glory!

3) Namco’s willingness to engage with the tournament community, attend events, and otherwise acknowledge our existence is a Very Good Thing, and a validation of the way we operate. Whining about what needs nerfing is by now a venerable tradition in the western gaming world, as is having those whines addressed to a degree (see any MMO’s rollercoaster of patches for examples). Japan, however, has historically skewed toward the “auteur model” of game design, by which I mean the feedback loop we have come to expect here is less present.

Daishi’s appearance at NEC doesn’t mean Namco is going to start caving to our every psychotic whim, but it does appear to indicate an acknowledgment that we’re the deepest players of—and best evangelists for—their game. The 8wayrun.com community’s dedication to spreading the word, putting on good events, and bootstrapping together some impressive opportunities to play games and have fun should be commended. Go us!

4) The Namco guys, in addition to seeming engaged, are also decent at their own game. This is hugely important. Calibur has, at least over the past couple of installments, been more popular in the US and Europe than in Japan (at least inasmuch as the tournament scene is concerned), which makes getting feedback from a large number of very skilled players logistically difficult. That being the case, it gives me a certain measure of relief to see Daishi pulling off some cold-blooded mindgames on the stream.

5) I’ve still got some real reservations about what’s coming down the pipe for SC5. There was talk of some kind of “random damage” mechanic to make things “fair” for less skilled players. Terrible idea. As I’ve noted many times before, Hate Speech’s official policy is to loathe randomness with the fire of a thousand suns because it undermines a game’s competitive foundation. What’s more, Yoshi-san repeatedly mentioned certain tactics that shouldn’t cause concern because they’re difficult to perform in an actual match. If there’s one thing that should now be obvious, it’s that any technique which is humanly possible will eventually be mastered by someone, so I hope that the development team takes that into account when making balance decisions.

I’m reminded of SC4 Hilde in this instance. I refuse to believe that Namco wasn’t aware of her doom combo prior to that game’s release, so I’m left to assume it’s possible they just figured nobody would ever figure out how to do it reliably. I’d really like to avoid another embarrassment like that.

Remember kids, this is technically impossible and was never done in a real game....

6) SC5 is quite different, but it’s still very much a Soul Calibur game. I say this because, in the exhibition tournament, the folks I expected to perform well actually did so, win or lose. This tells me that despite the many move changes, system tweaks, and the like, having a core competency of Calibur skill will translate fairly well into the new game.

7) Namco is still tweaking balance issues, so we don’t need to freak out about anything quite yet. I was intrigued and heartened to hear that balance is still a focus for the development team with a mere 8 weeks, give or take, until launch. While we certainly don’t want them changing and tweaking until the very last minute and then releasing a game that hasn’t been properly tested, the fact that the Namco contingent spoke candidly about a willingness to devote development resources toward crucial balance tweaks is pretty damn good news.

8) We’re still facing issues with regard to stream time. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t there at least one occasion in which casuals for some other game were being streamed while the Calibur tournament was taking place? Luckily, we have Jaxel’s streaming rig, some commentators who can manage to resist the urge to tell all but the classiest, most tasteful dick-jokes, and a core group of solid players who always manage to put on a pretty good show. With SC5, we need to consider the gauntlet thrown: we have everything we need to create compelling experiences for both players and spectators, so let’s rise to the challenge and create a real demand for Calibur content.

This is our equivalent level of class and sophistication. I approve.

That’s about all I have for now. The book is finally closed on SC4, but we have something that looks pretty amazing coming to us very soon. Let’s all enjoy it, stay hyped, and be killers when it comes out. As we all know, fighting games are experiencing a real renaissance right now, and we in the 8wayrun community appear poised to reap the benefits. I, for one, can’t wait.

Homework:
Send me get-well cards. Or $3.50. I’ll be back on track with a regular column next week, kids.

Its an exciting time, (sc5 just around the corner) but Its ok to be critical and still show love...

That Moment was priceless... LOLO doing a crazy DANCE and Scud sulking with a face that looks like he lost a lot of money in the match...

By the way, I really agree with this SPEECH(but I can't send u the get well card or the US$3.50, sorry); the part that I like the most is about making the right moves to have a game where people have fun playing and watching;

"Real Demand for Calibur content" that sentence is really inspiring...

The book is finally closed on SC4.
Perhaps's the end tournament-wise, but since there are characters staying in SCIV, it'll still be played a lot. Things like online will still survive after SCV comes. It won't be like BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger where the online virtually dies because the players flocked to Continuum Shift.

I'm speaking primarily from a tournament standpoint. We won't be seeing any more SC4 majors, that's for certain. I encourage you guys to embrace the new game, though, in addition to still liking 4, because with the right support we can have something pretty special.

Calibur Fever!

idk what sickness you have but honey works like a charm to clear a soar throat...it eats mucus. I wouldnt feed it to infants though due to the spores in it, they can die.

Now I want "Real Demand for improving Mitsu".

Mitsu has some sick combos and great frames on moves now, and better movement. He can't just do a braindead 50/50 now, people will need to play him differently, more as a mid ranged CH character is what I'm hearing.

Scud is so salty in that gif ! Somebody crop that face on a container of mortons salt lol ! Mannn I had allot of fun at NEC and it was great seeing so many of the community together for such a great event. I was glad to have played SC5 and i have to say that i am really looking forward to it !

I really like what you have written here with regards to SC5 and the developers, but i am a bit concerned because the game did not have extensive beta and/or arcade testing. Not only that but the build that we were able to play was probably only 60-70% of the final build ! Combine all that with the fact that the game has a complete re haul of the engine and its pretty much guaranteed that we are going to have a few broken things in SC5.

I really enjoyed having a stream dedicated to the non-Capcom games, I think I only looked up the Sp00ky stream once or twice for a few minutes. Honestly, I was surprised at how quickly some of the players were picking up SC5, it's clear that the core fundamentals do translate and after that, a little experimentation. Ramon's performance was particularly impressive. Dirty D's idgaf face was epic though.

nice article.

I too have reservations about the new game, but I wont delve into that right now.

1/31/12....... So close now :)

A few things:

1. Woahhzz is the best at SC4.

2. The game that lost its luster is Tekken 6. Two years in a row it had a bad reception at EVO, nobody wants to watch it when it's streamed, and I could see for myself the numbers it was doing at NEC when it was on compared to when it wasn't. But alot of people still come out for the game at NEC.

Maybe SC4 has for the people on the outside looking in, but I can't agree with that statement when the thread for NEC had over 80 pages to it, there were a bunch of setups for the game at NEC that people were constantly playing on, people playing matches to 6AM in the morning or later, people spending alot of money just to fly in, France flying in for the second year in a row to NEC, and a ton of people entering a tournament for a 3 year old "broken" game with a ridiculous amount of talented players. Not to mention the people who still play this game online. Even with SC5 in the building, I did not see a station for SC4 where someone wasn't playing on it.

3. If a year and a half ago you were to tell me that Project Soul would be coming to my city to show off SCV and spend hours upon hours answering people's questions about the game until late at night, I would have told you that you were crazy.

4. Clean hit is not an issue. Most people didn't even notice it until recently, when for me it was one of the first things that I saw once the status messages were put into the game. See Idle's post about it on the forum.

5. Soulcalibur received plenty of air time. I was helping out Jaxel record hour long blocks to put on YouTube. As for the actual SC4 tournament being streamed, it wasn't an issue of fighting with other games for air time, but a problem which delayed the start of the actual tournament. But the 6 on 6 and top 4 were streamed though, along with plenty of SC5.

The problem that I had with the previous games is that it was boring to watch. 3D games can be very dry to watch unless you know what's going on or have great commentary to go with it to keep the people engaged, or talk a bunch of shit to entertain people. But SC5 has all the ingredients to really blow up. It's fun to play and fun to watch. Hopefully when it does come out, people run with it and do great things.

6. To Aneudee's point about SC5 having some broken stuff, even with the location testing and being in the arcade, Tag 2 still has broken stuff in the game. Plus how does the game being in the hands of less people find stuff quicker? But from hearing the devs answers in regards to patching, I have no worries about SC5. Plus the game has been around to alot of events for people to play, so it's not like the game hasn't had any location testing.

7. For the majority of people, the book on SC4 was closed after EVO 2009. This NEC closes the book on the game in tournaments, and what better way than to have someone who lives two minutes away from where NEC was held to win the last major tournament for the game. But there will still be plenty of people playing the game online.

As for me, I hear the stories from people of when the new game comes out, the previous one is tossed aside or used as a coaster, but that won't be the case for me. I love SC4 and have too many memories with the game to just throw it away once the newer, hotter, more attractive version comes along. SC5 would have to be perfect in every way for me to do something like that. But I'll still continue to play SC4, along with the older games with anyone who wants to play them.

SC5 will be that hot, young 2nd wife that will get the majority of my attention. SC4 will be the older first wife when I want something familiar to fall back on.

8. Fuck yo sickness Hates. I don't know how you and Serge get sick on the same weekend. You two were surely missed.
