Looking for New RPGs to Play!

^Yes, yes, and yes. Best story out of any SW game i have ever played.

Also the new Deus Ex is out in like three days and its gonna be balls out spectacular, though its kind of a hybrid rpg. The origional (second one kinda sucked) is one of the deepest games ever made.

ps Dark Souls release date Oct 7 and its supposed to be harder than Demons Souls. delicious yuup.

edit: the vid states oct 7 release but ive also seen oct 4 so i guess we can agree that i'll be out in the first week of oct.

Star Ocean of course. I know this isn't really in the "RPG" genre but you should give Catherine a go it is unlike anything you've ever played I guarantee it. Try it if only for the story line.

...CY, you just suggested Hyperdimension Neptune and Trinity Universe yet you comment about Nier getting "bashed like crazy"? Are you unaware that Hyperdimension Neptune and Trinity Universe have nothing appealing unless you're a typical weeaboo moron.

Story? Trash
Gameplay? Trash
Characters? Trash
Music? Trash
Graphics? Trash

Nier was FAR from perfect, that's easy to admit. However, it's great story-telling, characters, and music makes it rather easy to forgive it's few shortcomings in terms of gameplay (in the fact that the game overall was way too easy).

But you know I didn't say they were great, right? I mean they ain't amazing, but TU is a lot of fun in my opinion. And I just telling you what other people thought about the game. That's not my opinion. So chill out man. But if you want my opinion. Neir doesn't grab my interest. There is not enough there to shout buy for me. Aww....crap I forgot about Persona. I fucking love all the Personas. I feel kind of salty for not finishing P2:IS. It's fucking godlike. Spreading rumors become a reality. So fucking awesome.

Classic: FF7, FF8, FF10, FF Tactics. Chrono Cross & Trigger.
More Modern: Kingdom hearts, Oblivion, Mass Effect 1+2

Seriously. There is no excuse to not play Vagrant Story.

If you are allergic to things that aren't covered in Weabooness, then the Persona series is also available. But honestly, if you haven't played Vagrant story then you have no idea what you are missing.

I assume you're talking about more modern, recently released RPGs, in that case... pickings are kind of slim.

Mass Effect 1 is short, with some awful and poorly balanced shooter aspects. Mass Effect 2 greatly improves on the gameplay, particularly the combat/shooter mechanics, but its even shorter than the original if you're just plowing through the story.

Dragon Age 1 and 2 are pretty lousy in terms of both gameplay and general story vibe. The game feels overly generic and despite difficult, somewhat grey-ish choices and dialog that you're presented with and given, they ultimately have very little impact on the overall story. Dragon Age 2 - like Mass Effect 2 - greatly refines the combat mechanics, though they're ultimately very boring MMO style combat mechanics, so you may or may not like them, depending on your preferences. The story in DA2 is terrible, with the main PC coming as a very Mary-Sue character.

Tales of Vesperia came out in 2008. It's a pretty solid Xbox 360 title and really refines a lot of the time-worn mechanics from the Tales series and has a lot of great fighter elements in its deep combat engine. It's notable Tales game in that it is the last Tales game we've gotten in the US and it has no voice cuts. Worth checking out if you haven't already.

NIS, Aksys, Compile Heart, or Idea Factory games are somewhat common, though hard to find right now. I wouldn't recommend a few of them. Neptunia is trite, broken, and pandering; same with the Record of the Agarest War games. Atelier Rorona isn't bad - being from Gust - and worth a look into, despite being really simple. I don't particularly care about Ar Tonelico Qoga, though some seem to enjoy it. Keep in mind it's game that's heavy on the pandering despite some well-to-do ideas for game play systems. Disgaea 4 is coming out in about 2 weeks, and that's definitely worth a look as it attempts to try and capture the feel and magic of the original Disgaea.

Beyond that, there's Valkyria Chronicles - definitely worth a buy. There's also Resonance of Fate, which is a great game that anyone who likes RPGs should try. Although the story may not fill any cravings, its still a solid serving. For handheld RPGs, there's Persona 3 Portable, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (ditch the other LoH games and go straight to this one). Ys 7, Ys 3: Oath in Felghana and Radiant Historia are all very solid games. Dragon Quest 6 is good, Dragon Quest 9 is decent (as a long time DQ fan, I can't quite say I enjoyed DQ9 as much as other titles). Dissidia 012: DuoDecim is great, contains the entire cast from the first game plus its story and a brand new story and characters. Definitely worth it. There's also Golden Sun: Dark Dawn which is worth checking out for its pure simplicity and very back to basics story.

To sum it up, handheld RPGs are the way to go right now. There's a few console ones that are good buys too. Here's my list to try...

Recommend:
Valkyria Chronicles
Resonance of Fate
Ys 3: Oath in Felghana
Ys 7
Dissidia 012: Duodecim
Dragon Quest 6
Persona 3 Portable
Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Disgaea 4
Tales of Vesperia
Radiant Historia

Worth a look:
Mass Effect 1 and 2
Atelier Rorona
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
Lost Odysessy
Magna Carta 2

Avoid:
Dragon Age 1 and 2
Hyperdimension Neptunia
Record of the Agarest War
Record of the Agarest War Zero
Trinity Universe

I highly reccomend Valkyria Chronicles for PS3. Its possibly one of my top 10 games and its just SO FUCKING GOOD. Also, I would suggest White Knight Chronicles...but only if you can take a small portion of Japanese stereotypes and Dragonball Z voice actors

Oh, btw, screw Dark Dawn, go old school with Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age. Best little fellas you'll ever play. Though, good luck finding one since GBA games are considered ancient and classic now, and getting one on eBay will probably cost you a fortune.

Have you tried Dynasty Warriors 7? It's not an RPG as such; but it is rather enjoyable.
Dynasty Warriors (Not just 7, pretty much the whole series) gets trashed like anything. Which puzzles me 'cause I was going to buy it till I saw all the hate going around -_- Why the hate? Is it deserved? Looked like fun to me.

Dynasty Warriors is great fun honestly. I love to be overpowered and take on like a thousand enemies at once ;)

Oh and if you haven't played Borderlands, you should try it. Its not particularly an RPG but theres quite alot of customization and RPG elements to play with. Also, Demon's Souls is the shit. Seriously play that. Oh and stay away from Dragon Age. Very far away. If your looking for just an epic story with great characters and over the top moments play Uncharted 1 and 2 although the series isn't an RPG it has awesome characters fun gameplay and alot of exploring and stuff to do. Plus theres multiplayer!

Go find a game called Okage: Shadow King (PS2). It's probably in the $1 bin at your local Gamestop. It is definitely my favorite RPG of all time. It's a fun, cool, cute, stylish story about a boy whose shadow gets taken over by an Evil King, who then forces him to take over the world. For a good part of the story it your basic fantasy fare, and even has a Princess to fall in love with, but it's got a hell of a twist that you won't see coming at all. The game contains a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor, both at itself and RPGs and general, which gives it an easy going and enjoyable feeling most of the time.

The player character, Ari, has a customizable personality similar to that of Persona games - you'll have three different responses to chose from when conversing with characters, ranging from upbeat and happy, to sarcastic and depressive, or even make him a cliched Heroic Mime. Some responses have a point, others mean very little, but all allow immersion on a deeper level.

The game also has some sidequests for you to do, including attempting to join a world wide organization of riddle enthusiasts, a straightforward-yet-ridiculous trading quest, and a Compatibility system with other party characters. Okage also boasts one of the most amazing soundtracks of any game I've ever heard, and is definitely one you'll want to get for yourself.

However, the game is by no means perfect. My chief complaint is the combat system. Turn order is similar to Final Fantasy VII's ATB Gauge, strengths and weakness follow a rock-paper-scissors elemental formula, you'll accumulate tons of useful items that you'll never want to actually use - it's all stuff you've done before if you've played any RPG ever. On that point, very little is innovated by it. It also makes the painful mistake of "If lead character dies at any point, game over" which I feel is one of the worst things an RPG can do. By no means is it BAD, and grinding isn't inhibited by it (if you want to - you probably won't need to), but it doesn't bring much unique to the table.

If you can get past the combat being a bit dull, you're looking at a solid RPG that will give you hours upon hours of play time.
