3 days, Pocky will close voting time!

Meanbeard for that incredible Sagat. Chobek's Cammy almost made me vote him, but I managed to supress my lower instincts and vote with the heart. Lot of awesome creations this time. Liked a lot that Viper too and is a character I dont like at all

Thanks for Dudley recipie BTW

Man, several great entries this time. Is it against the rules to vote for the host? Dudley and Alex are just too good.

You can vote who you want, just remember to add wich character

Btw agree, many great entry... i will have to count many factors to give my vote

Well, first let me say congratulations to all we passed from 3-4 entries of past contest to the current over 20(?), and the overall quality is high too

As said i will use 3 factors to vote: catch spirit of the char, SC restyle and technique

1- First is kinda hard really many creators done good job as recreation
2- SC restyle? Now this will help me chose, even if good jobs half of contenders did'nt understand that the point was'nt do a straight recreation. First line of the contest was "Chose a character and imagine how will look in SC age" kinda clear :D
3- Technique... i will use it as last factor, but as said the overall quality is good

My vote goes to

Sakura by TheHatter
Probably the one closest to the point of this contest, it catch Sakura's spirit, it have an huge ancient/SC restyle but keep elements of design and colors that create a istant link with the original. As technique is ok, maybe not the most impressive i've seen this round but the first two points are more important imho.
Bruce's Cammy is a close second, catch the spirit and good technique... there is an attempt of restyle too, just not as strong as the Hatter's
Strange situation, there was two CaS that with very little changes will have took my vote: MeanBeard's Go Hibiki is maybe my favourite CaS done by somebody during this round, and look more ancient than his other two entries (both good ,but 100% straight recreations), but still not enough... few ancient elements + a weapon and it was absolutely my candidate.
The other is Pocky's Sakura, huge restyle, very SCish and as technique one of the best Pocky's things i ever seen... a good CaS under any point of view. Only thing that missed was catch the character spirit: for Sakura Ryu wannabe headband and short tomboy haircut it's kinda a must, the character's visual signature
Said that, all trhee mentioned creators was very close, problem is i had to pick one

Other honourable mentions: Quinion's Ibuki and even if very simple Norik's Q

Ok, I want to vote for brucege's Cammy or NeclordX's Necro, but neither one of them actually followed the challenge of "Soulcaliburizing" a SF character. KokoYoshi did a really good at making a SC-esque design, but you can't really tell it's Sakura. Thus, my vote goes to Gatsu's Dudley. Easily one of the best creations I've seen in SCV.

If we are able to vote for Gatsu then - I vote for Gatsu's Dudley

If because he created the challenge he is out of the running, I vote for Brucege's Cammy.

Lots of cool stuff from everyone though!

shit!! I didn't have time to participate

well.. I go almost like chobek:
If we are able to vote for Gatsu then - I vote for Gatsu's Dudley
If because he created the challenge he is out of the running, I vote for Brucege's Guile.

Alotta strong entries this round, but my vote's for Quinion's Blanka. The Goku hair and fur motifs in the gauntlets, shoulder guards, and boots all capture Blanka's bestial image. His primal-looking armor, skull necklace, and crude-ass axes establish this recreation as a Berserker/Orc warrior, a trope that's tailor-made for Blanka. The design remains faithful to the original while blending seamlessly into the SCV universe. Everything just makes sense (minus that random sticker on the waist flap).

Some notes on my creations:
For my Cammy, I just slapped on some belts and samurai shit. Still, she was fun to make and sexy to boot, so I ain't complaining. As I said before, C. Viper has zero relevance to SCV, but as a major MVC3 fan, I couldn't possibly exclude her (or her bewbs). I tried to make her into a geisha/Setsuka, but it just didn't work out. For Guile, I instantly envisioned an ignorant American otaku trying hard to be Japanese but failing hilariously. That's why all the equipment is uber-samurai-esque. He just seems to have forgotten that samurais didn't sport crew cuts, American flags, or camo-patterned trench coats. Probably the most fun I've had in CaS in a long, long time.

I usually restrain myself from being this blunt, but I have to ask: honestly, how many of you actually read the prompt for this round?

Because I don't think anyone past the first four entrants read the prompt. That's not an exaggeration.
Soul Caliburize a Street Fighter Character! Chose a character and imagine how will look in SC age, considering his/her country of origin, style and so on

If i can say just post stuff without give a fuck to win, "Soulcaliburize SF" was a theme i wanted suggest from a while... is a composed thing, you've to do a recreation(character) and an original(SC restyle) at the same time
To me, it's pretty clear that the prompt was to make a re-styling, not a simple 1:1 recreation. I thought this was also a problem last round with the cartoon characters; the prompt was similar to this round's. We were to make re-styles, yet it seemed like many of the entries, if not the majority, were straight remakes.

With that in mind, I have to disregard many entries from this round when considering my vote. Don't get me wrong. Lots of them are great and show mastery of Creation mode, but they just do not meet the qualifications of the prompt, plain and simple. Some of these entries are from more established contributors, too, so it's a shame.

Moving on, the entries that are foremost in my mind are Quinion's and TheHatter's. Props to TheHatter for really utilizing the original designs' color schemes and arrangements. However, I feel both designs fall short on sticker and pattern usage, with not much at all on Sakura and so much on Rose that it all looks messy. Thus, my vote goes to Quinion. Both designs are clean and really look like SC restyles. I'd have liked to see more detail work on Blanka, but I really like the Ibuki design, specifically the fishnets, shoulder armor detailing, and the patterning on the shin guards.

Alright, that's enough voting. Except me since I'm a tyranny and after this post no one else votes. You all had from Monday to Thursday. My vote and review will be be coming. As such bear in mind I'm going to look at everyone's CAS...not just my favorites.

This will be my opinion on each. Before I cast my vote, I shall give everyone a pat on the back. You all contributed strong this time, but there are weaknesses for each of us. I will do my best to review all of them so don't be too offended on what I give you.

I'm excluded from judgement since mine was a rushed delivery of some generic badass Sakura. If I took time(which I didn't have atm), I would of made something stronger. No worries, I'll make her and Ingrid another time.

NeclordX
Contributed Effie and some other weird character.

I don't know who those characters are, but I guess this is what happens when the least favorite characters aren't that popular. While they do look close to their counterparts, imho I feel meh with them. I just don't feel them captivating that much to make me appreciate the under-appreciated characters. Still, thanks for making them.

Quinion
Contibuted Ibuki and Blanka.

Blanka looks like Blanka. Ibuki imho felt strong at first, but maybe if you added a third color and some minors, it would of gotten my vote. Also, you're Gatsu Jr.

TheHatter
Contributed Sakura and Rose.

I will say I love your Sakura. I'm a big fan of her and the things you did to her. I'd probably lower the saturation a little bit and give a little more subtle patterns. Otherwise, it's staying true to what Gatsu wanted. Recreation that's Caliburised.

Rose imho wasn't as hot because she's suffering from sticker overload. Tone it down and keep it simple an elegant.

Gatsu

Contributed Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Alex, Vega(claw), E. Honda, and Dudley

You might as well make the whole cast of SF characters that exist and wow us more. This contest was all you.

Donutman
Contributed Ingrid

Ingrid may not be popular with certain people, but I'm a fan of her. Some people overlooked your Ingrid, but I didn't. The only nitpick was if you caliburised it, you could probably turn heads. Still, I'm happy you made one of my favorite Capcom characters and inspire me to make what I could of made.

MeanBeard
Contributed Fei-Long, Sagat, and Go Hibiki.

Fei-Long and Sagat are solid recreations but nothing more.

Go Hibiki makes the son of Sakiyo really happy. It also makes the fan of the son of Hibiki really happy. Oyajiii!!!
Strong entry you are because like TheHatter it fits what gatsu wanted.

Limit9999

Contributed Vega(claw) and Akuma.

Akuma wasn't much except a solid recreation. Vega actually got me interested, but I feel as though it's not enough to hold my interest. In general, Soul Caliburising is what you lack. Thanks for entering regardless.

brucege
Contributed Guile, C. Viper, and Cammy.

Guile theme goes with anything. C. Viper and Cammy make me think outstanding recreations but nothing more. However, Guile's theme goes with anything. 'Murrica!!!

Onyyx
Contributed M. Bison(dictator).

I could tell it's the dictator art, but nothing more since I saw no Caliburisation. Thanks for entering though.

chobek
Contributed Akuma, Dhalsim, Cammy, Ryu, Ken, and Zangief.

I think you went SF purist on us, chobek. Recreations and soul caliburising, not just solid recreations my friend.

Norik
Contributed Dudley, Ken, and Q

The poor man's Dudley to Gatsu's, a rather simple and too modernized Ken for my tastes, and some intriguing Q. The Q was probably your strongest of the three.

My three runner ups is TheHatter, brucege, and MeanBeard. MeanBeard's Go Hibiki was great, brucege trolololed with Guile's theme(it really goes with anything), and TheHatter outclasses my Sakura because it stayed true to what she's supposed to be.

My vote however goes to Gatsu's Ryu. If I wanted to be frank, a challenge issued by Gatsu is gonna be tough because anything you can do, he could do better. Such as Norik's silly Dudley to Gatsu's amazing Dudley. Your best bet is to have his babies. Ironically, my Sakura might as well do just that to his Ryu.

The votes. Gatsu I'm just gonna say it's gonna be confusing tallying up the votes but....

MeanBeard's Hibiki 1
TheHatter's Sakura 1
Gatsu's Ryu 1
brucege's C. Viper 1
brucege's Guile 1
Gatsu's Dudley 2
brucege's Cammy 1
Quinion's Blanka 1
Quinion's Ibuki 1

Through votes and overall impact, it's an understatement to say Gatsu had a free ride this time. Where was Matty82, VILARCANE, ThePascuzzi, and a few others when we simply got owned at Gatsu's own challenge?

Either way I'm hype for the next contest! HYPEHYPEHYPEHYEPHYPEHYPEHY*SHOT*
Besides at least it was dudley who pwnt us, and we still have our dignity
And at least, he didnt do this to us

A few points in response:

A) I thought we couldn't vote for whoever proposed the challenge, to keep the contest rotating amongst entrants? If that's not the case, then Gatsu absolutely took it, though that might just be because of his sheer number of high-quality entries rather than the quality itself.

B) Are votes going to entrants or entries? Not that there's much difference; a vote towards a specific entry still counts towards an entrant's total for that round, but if it's for entries, then count mine for Quinion's Ibuki, if you haven't already.

C) I'm sorry, I didn't enter this round because I'm a bit busy with a CaS project already, on top of other life stuff.

@Pascuzzi: Can't argue with three paragraph essays ;)

@Donutman: I watched that shit three times, and it still warms my heart.

@KokoYoshi: Rant ahead. You have been warned.
Listen, Koko, we all know Gatsu's one of the best, if not THE best at CaS, but no one, especially myself, wants to hear that (s)he got "owned" at anything. Even if I only win this contest by a technicality, all that stuff about where's Matty, Vil, and Pas implies a lack of competition, which is denigrating to the victor and every single participant. This does little to promote the solidarity of our already fragile CaS community. You've contributed tremendously as a moderator, artist, and storyteller, so I only point out this diplomatic miscalculation for the sake of the community that I know you love so much. And essays. I like writing essays.

Alright let me address this.

That's a tie between Gatsu and Brucege (3:3). How do we settle this?
I'll leave it to both of them to decide. Tie breaker, shared victory, or whatever. Thanks for the correction.

For and A and C, thanks for the clarification. For point B? I have no clue as I'm just going by what Gatsu said on his contest proposal:

RULES:
-Entries are allowed from now to 28 April
-Voting start 29, last three days
-Post as many entries as you want.
-Vote goes to the single character, if you get 5 votes for your Ryu and 3 for your Chun Li, you got 5 votes

I didn't demand them to show themselves, brucege. It's merely a silly competitive ego smack talk. I guess my hardcore competitive mindset + dress-up casuals mindset = doesn't quite mix. As much as I'd like to see everyone drop what they're doing and do CAS, reality always comes first. Bear in mind, sometimes I say things and it can be blunt and somewhat harsh. However, there's no ill will in it. I could care less who wins, as long as everyone is having fun. I'm not some scholar talker...even though I like to be pretentious with words.

There's CAS artists/fans out there that need a nudge to be here. You just gotta invite them here and show them the ropes. However, I don't believe the CAS community is suffering. Being negative begets negative. If everyone stopped doing CAS for a silly fickle reason like "CAS community is fragile", then I guess I'll just keep doing mine to flaunt that the CAS forum has people who want to keep it alive....provided peeps help me with the 411.

All things aside, feels good to get what you want to say off your chest right?
