Here's Marvel commentary in a nutshell:

OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!

OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!

Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!

OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!

The SCV commentary was better on Saturday than it was on Sunday, but it wasn't terrible and was still informative. But people need to do less complaining and step up to the mic themselves.

QFT and lulz about Marvel.

I stepped up at Cannes and although it was far from perfect, the FR commentary was dire by comparison generally. Hype can only go so far before its just annoying as commentary and if you're going to commentate a freaking major, as Engared rightly said - have SC players do it.
DK alone would have done a significantly better job imo. =/

Just watched the entire stream. Good matches.

Way too many Leixia's and Natsu's though. Would have preferred to see more characters used, but oh well.

Omega, your the man. I'm taking a page out of your book, if you don't mind. My NM is by no means bad, but I need some work with him. I saw some interesting tactics that I think I will use myself.

I thought it was hilarious that the commentators bashed Swordlord to no end, and then he went on to beat some of the best players. It doesn't really matter if you miss combo's, don't punish properly, etc., because at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is winning or losing. Whatever his gameplay lacked, he made up for with other good qualities.

@hates.

If someone wronged you by backing out of a money match (which is pretty dishonorable, I agree), then criticize them for that only, instead of childishly and foolishly calling him "scrub", especially when you were proven very wrong immediately after you bashed him to pieces. Your better than that, right?

The commentary wasn't bad at all and it is still a work and progress. I agree with the post stating that some player background should go into it. Like when a big time player comes on hype them up. This was done to some extent but not at all extensively. Like I remember thinking no one on the stream can appreciate what a big deal Thuggish is. They don't know the half. On a Capcom stream they constantly remind you who all the major players are, their accomplishments etc.

The correct dose of humor, hype, and informative match break down must be delivered. As for American commentary on SC I really enjoyed Dreamkiller and Ramon during FSAK. Wasn't perfect but showed some real potential. Really knew how to hype up big moments and keep things entertaining even when much isn't going on.

Personal opinion shouldn't play too much of a role, most people enjoy a decent amount of objectivity.

No disrespect just my thoughts. Improvement is never a bad thing.

You kinda need a mix of both really for good commentary. FilthieRich and Bibulus would've been a good team for example, as Bibs could've laid down the information on the game, the community, and its players, while FilthieRich can make up shit like "Nightmare with that CHUCK NORRIS 9k!"

I'm a huge hoops junkie, and Hubie Brown is the best, most informative commentator for bball. But on his own, he'd be incredibly boring to listen to. You need a guy who gets hyped up over dunks like Mike Breen next to him.

Props to the SC community for finding more time to bitch about the stream than actually giving props to the top 8. Great job SRK....err.......8wayrun. I know at least the old school vets appreciate the fact we even HAVE a stream. Some of you are so insanely ungrateful

Louis CK has a funny interview how people bitch about stuff they didnt even know exist 5 minutes ago, reminds me of this discussion.

:)

What exactly was so dire about the FR commentary?

The commentary wasn't bad at all and it is still a work and progress. I agree with the post stating that some player background should go into it. Like when a big time player comes on hype them up. People who don't play Soulcalibur aren't going to know or appreciate who thugish_pond is, so hyping him up isn't going to do much. That has more to do with the lack of coverage that SC gets compared to Marvel and AE where the viewers know who the players are because you have multiple websites dedicated to covering/interviewing them and mentioning their accomplishments.

SCV is starting to receive more coverage, but still lacks in coverage on the actual players. But the background of the players was mentioned though, just not in the hypest of fashion.

You kinda need a mix of both really for good commentary. FilthieRich and Bibulus would've been a good team for example, as Bibs could've laid down the information on the game, the community, and its players, while FilthieRich can make up shit like "Nightmare with that CHUCK NORRIS 9k!"

Having two people of the same personality doesn't work out from a viewership standpoint. You need someone who can bring the hype and someone else who can do the analysis. I'm just not going to lose sleep over who was on the mic because there's alot going on at these tournaments, and the people doing commentary are also playing in the tournament as well and need to worry about not getting disqualified.

When we get to the point where we have people who do nothing but commentate on the gameplay, I will worry about it. Guess we need some more washed up players to do that.

Props to the SC community for finding more time to bitch about the stream than actually giving props to the top 8. Great job SRK....err.......8wayrun. I know at least the old school vets appreciate the fact we even HAVE a stream. Some of you are so insanely ungrateful

It's not the entire community bitching about the commentary. I do appreciate that SC was even streamed. Personally I was mad at the lack of coverage that SC was getting when it was the third largest tournament at Final Round when other, less exciting games got tons of air time, and when plenty of people were asking to see it.

Malice and Bibulus is a good combo imo - Malice commentating is hype. No other commentator got hype over Maxi FC 3A series. ^^

I hate doing commentary.

But people need to show more appreciation to those who do get on the mic and keep people entertained. It's hard to be funny, witty, informative, and not clichéd to an audience of people who want to say the most vile, vicious, racist, sexist things about you.

If anyone can do a better job, the opportunity is there. Put up or shut up.

Talk about controller issues, unbelievable, I had so many of those on Saturday having to use Suphy's horrible horrible pad... made it so much harder to get through pools... anyway got it straightened out for Sunday.

I haven't seen the commentary, but I expected Hates to... Hate about some unimportant shit that happened like over 3 years ago. That's his problem, I really don't care.

It was so funny how folks were all scared of Nightmare at this tourney, rethinking tiers and shit all cause of Omega.... having like a 1 hour practice mode session in the middle of the tourney to try and figure out how to play against his weak ass. Nightmare isn't that good a character, period. The ONLY reason Omega won this tourney is because he is the best player in the world. I've said that about him since sc3.

Great shit to Hawkeye, you came prepared, your Natsu is really fun to watch and play against. Get ur ass on Xbox live.

Congrats to Thuggish for bein a spamming noob and countering me and Wingzero's styles. We'll be goin to the lab and be ready for ya next time.

Was a great event, nice seein everyone. I hope they archive the stream footage.
Keevs is better. Period.

I thought Mark Man and Filthie Rich did an amazing job on commentary. Filthie is that guy I want to commentate my matches. I was thoroughly impressed with Mark Mans commentary. He actually knows his shit when it comes to SoulCalibur. It was an honor to have him as a guest commentator. You see these two guys who are like rock stars in the FGC, but they are actually competitive gamers themselves. Good ones too. I was hoping that Hates wouldn't go the route of bashing Sword Lord, but it's something that's been festering in him for years. I'm sure he got it all out of his system. I like hearing his commentating when it isn't biased. He held back saying that the East Coast sucks when Bibulus said, "Nobody from the EC has won a match yet" (which was wrong, because Omega had won his match prior to that), but he just couldn't resist that golden opportunity to shit on Sword Lords moment. So he backed out of a money match. It's not like he did it snickering like he got away with murder. He still went through with a $100 money match, then he left the scene for awhile, and came back. A new man. He deserves another chance to be a part of the community. I for one, will always be his friend.

You know, Enk, it might actually be out of my system now, though I disagree with your characterization of his attitude. The impression I always got was that he was incredibly smug about it.

Anyway, I knew I'd be spending a hefty portion of my accumulated goodwill by (hopefully) forever tarnishing what should have been a good moment of his, but as I said, I felt a really uncomfortable ethical obligation. Catharsis is a hell of a thing, though.

The whole situation is still fucking with me a little bit, but I knew that'd be the case going in, too, which is why I try to pick my spots when it comes to grabbing at Pyrrhic victories.

Changing gears a bit, there's a ton to be said about the event itself, the level of play on display, and everything else, which I'm really looking forward to addressing soon. Additionally, I'm going to try to get on the mic this weekend at Norcal's Tight or Fight, in which case I encourage everyone to tune in and give me more feedback on how I can become a better commentator.

Commentary matters a hell lot. I know this is the FGC and you're all new to this shit. But part of the reason the commentary was underwhelming was KOF.

I have watched some KOF with commentary before. Pretty bland, pretty boring never really got me into the game, never really cared for the hype. Until freaking JuiceBox got on the mic....Really I gotta say he made KOF into something spectacular. While being informative he had their entire stream audience eating from the palm of his hands. Best commentary by far. Dude had me exciting and learning a game in the few minutes of commentary he did. Completely changed my mind about the entertainment value of KOF.

And that's really what commentary is for. I mean I pay money to watch Korean SC2 commentated in English because of how much I enjoy the English commentators. I know the FGC likes to separate itself from Esports, because the majority of you are confused. But Esports is just a term that refers to competitive gaming as visual entertainment. Commentary more so than analysis and information is for enhancing the entertainment value. That's why I stay and watch Marvel. I don't give a shit about Marvel in any other setting than with commentary.

So the mood of the audience I would say took a nose dive after Juicebox into SCV. Now normally I don't care about SCV commentary especially the informative type. It doesn't really do anything for me since I know how the game works anyway. But this setting where we have a multitude of FG fans. Where you can feel the expectation of audience waiting for something exciting to happen, the commentary just didn't match the mood. It doesn't help when we have multiple leixia's and pyrrha's either. Thank Gawd for NM and Natsu.

I can't really sugar coat it for you the bottom line is. We need good commentary, it's something we have to work on but it must be done moving forward.

Hates made a football reference on one of his commentaries that I really really liked.

I really enjoyed myself at FR. I need to play against Omega again; Chiqui made things so hard for me lol. I also need revenge on Hawkeye & pond, as they cheated me :D

I missed a few people...where were Enk and Suirad?????????????

Nonetheless, It was good seeing everyone again. I hope to see you guys again soon.

Since when did Swordlord get a vagina that enkindu is white knighting that hard for him?

Also if it wasn't for me, DK would have never placed that high.
