Origin of Spam.

There's always been some rather odd terms in video games, and fighting games are no exception. Using numbers for directional inputs, "Whiffing", and of course, the word "spam", as we all know of it today.

How do you think a type of meat that comes in a can changed meanings to such as this?

Today's use of spam is a term coined by the MONTHLY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS.

Spam does not technically mean "unsolicited mail". In flying circus, the term spam is used for fillerbustering. Filling in space that would otherwise be filled with something else; simply because of things like a lack of creativity. In the skit above, the cook is lacking creativity in her meals, so she is just filling it with spam. So the term spam in gaming is technically correct; as it stands for filling in spaces in a match with the same moves over and over due to a lack of creativity from the player.

Lol... I type faster than I can think... so while typing Monty, somehow Monthly comes out because of muscle memory.

"Whiff" is an onomatopoeia. That answers that one.

@Philbond

I like how you commented on monthly python typo, but not the actual thread name.

I have to restrain myself when it comes to pointing out typos, or I'd derail every thread ever. If the typo doesn't bear its own fruit, I let it slide.

if you do your research, you'll soon find out most of internet culture is based off Monthly Pythons Flying circus and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
