Maybe it's because I've heard Sophie do it for over a decade, but you're supposed to sound a lot more cold-blooded when you do Sophie's side throw.
My first impression is that this is anime dub syndrome. Americans don't sound like Japanese. It's one thing to be able to do good impressions, but if you can't do them for heaven's sake don't. It would be so much better if voice actors just spoke in a more natural voice.
How important is it to sound "authentic" anyways? Our impression of whiny little girls who run from everything is very different than the Japanese. You can sound like you don't have that much confidence without sounding like a total idiot, and that would be far more effective than just trying to copy the Japanese. Then again, these people are paid to read cards, not to actually think about the effect on the audience.
