SCV Ivy FAQ & General Discussion

nothing major is going to be changed about her, guys.
Threads like these are pointless
...damn link has to go win a championship, now namco will never buff her.
lol

Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate the support. To answer some questions, I had stopped posting mainly because I got tired of the doom and gloom attitude toward SC5 Ivy. Maybe she's not top tier (there were definitely times where I had whittled someone's life down, then got launched once and was suddenly behind), but as I said on stream, she has enough. I don't know why versatility is so underrated.

And to be totally honest, the answer to any character weakness has always been the same: get better at the game. So, you need an extra read or five to win a round. Get good enough to do it. When I lose, I may complain about some perceived weakness in Ivy, but my motivation is then channeled toward "compensate for this weakness," not "let me find a character without this weakness."

As for the tournament, I admit, I got away with some stuff due to unfamiliarity. However, I was also more spotty on execution and reactions than usual. I guess that's what I get for not competing in two years. I'll play better next time.

Finally, regarding sidestep CS, buffer the whole thing and then step.

Amen as well!! I've always said that there is something about her, maybe our approach with her was wrong. Well now we see that she can do it again, just not how our fantasies wanted. I also think that this may be one of the better SC's ever because I cannot stop playing it...

Thank you, Link. I apparently don't have any credibility when I say that. =/ I must get better and place at NCR...

And CS THEN step? Must try this. I know you have an insane time to press B+G after you press the last 6. Interesting.

Not to derail Link Success with Ivy, Congrats man, Im sure you brought alot of other players back to the Ivy fields. Maybe they'll stay on for more then a week this time.

Has anyone had any issues with 8A+B wiffing after Wr [B ]? The way i have been wiffing this thing online you would think my fingers were made by hambuger helper. So i was wondering is it just me not timing it correctly or is a online thing(i rarely think this is the case for my screw up's but this is ridiculous. Its cost me enought RO's to the point that I stopped using it and just 6B ppl out of the ring which i think they can AC.)

Doesn't this kinda feel exactly like SC3 all over again to you?

By the way, do you post your messages in a smaller font size or is this some sort of a forum bug? Just curious.

I think SC3 Ivy was better, honestly. But you're right, I do see some parallels. What makes this easier to overcome than SC3 are JG and Guard Burst. How could Ivy crack a super safe, AA, BB, 2A, 2K turtle in SC3? Now compare that to SC5. You have more options to deal with that super defensive style.

Yes, I change my font family and size. I don't like how the standard text looks.

You're right I guess. I still am not entirely convinced to the new Ivy. I don't like what she has become, pretty much a close range character. Maybe I got lazy during SC4 where the character was so good that I didn't have to spend so much time figuring out match-ups and forgot how it's like to be an underdog. In time people will learn Ivy and I fear the frustration I went through SC3 will slowly start to come back. To maintain my position I will have to be on top of my game all the time, I'm not sure If I can do this. I mean spend so much time on a video game. How do you deal with this Link?

If only we could have old SW 44A and WP 3A back life would have been much easier =/

I dont get it i went to training mode and did it with internet delay on and got it fine. But on another note i was messing around with Wr 1B and 6A+B just to see if it works, it does and make tech trap that i believe would catch all directions but the major problem is the speed. The Wp takes about a full day to get behind Ivy so it would take some serious conditioning to land this on somone.

Hey Sora - Were you on PSN last night? If you were, I think I played you in random a ranked match.

I didn't like what Ivy was in SC4, and you know how I dealt with that, haha. I quit. If you don't like her or the game, why play?

I'm not sure if you're asking my opinion on having to be sharp all the time or the time commitment to doing so. For the first one, that's actually where the fun is for me. Needing to eke out every advantage possible to compete, and then having to do it in a high pressure tournament setting, forces me to be a smarter, more confident player. I'm not really concerned about my position in the scene; I just want to play the game at the highest possible level.

Regarding the time needed, aren't you better now than you were in SC3? Think about it. Fundamentally, the game is the same, and you have such a good framework of how to play. All it will take are tweaks and exposure to the new stuff and you should be fine. It won't take as long to tweak as it did to build. That being said, if you're questioning whether it's worth it, then it's probably not. I like having a familiar face/name in the Ivy forum to help me test and find new stuff, but do something you enjoy instead. Either the fire will come back, or you'll find that you don't miss it at all.

And I'll have to concede that 3(A) should stun on CH. Tried to make it work, but ... no.

Evan, yes. :) We should play some more! Add me -- fun to face Ivy's.

Wait a second, did I hear someone say that with FC 1B, 1B BE and Sidestep->CS was a combo where CS grabbed them in air??

This isn't a combo at all. Tech trap at the most, maybe. But definitely not recommended to forego guaranteed, meaty damage from 6B8. Not even sure if 1B BE connects after FC 1B, now that I think about it.

Also, just tested CS buffer -> sidestep in some matches. Genius. Hella fun to do after a BB string, whether blocked or on hit. Trying to practice to buffer in CS almost everytime before stepping, and just going for the grab or do 88[ B ] string instead should they start ducking.

I totally agree... I stopped playing really after SCII... I have all the games, didn't even trade them in, but I just really didn't like how both SCIII and SCIV played, particularly Ivy... I did pick up Setsuka a little bit for III, IV and the PSP game, but never spent a lot of time with it... For some reason, I feel like SCV is a step in the right direction... I still have my gripes, but I feel it's a better built game when compared to III and IV... SCII was perfection, in my eyes...

Alright, just thought I was missing something. And 1B BE does combo after FC 1B, though the timing is a bit strict. FC 1B, 1B BE, 1B BE, 1B BE, 1B BE, 6B8 does quite a bit of damage.

Haha, It's a mixture of feelings for me. I like the game itself much more than SC4, but I like Ivy less. I'm telling myself I just have to accept her the way she is. I have to admit I tried to stop SC many times (SC3 - frustration haha SC4 - boredom) but I always came back to it. Maybe it's because competitive play is more than just playing a video game - it's lots of traveling, meeting new people and old friends etc now that I have tasted that I wouldn't want to miss it. But at the same time, I don't want to get obsessed and spend too much time on the game. I need to find some balance.

The only issue I have with the game is that I don't have as much fun playing Ivy as before. This may sound stupid coming from someone who speaks about competitive play but for me it was always one of the factors. I hope that in time I can overcome this.

I need to update the sticked threads. I've been using all my time to train for an upcoming tournament, but I promise to do that soon.

I liked SC3, even though it was frustrating at times. I do agree that SCV is a good step forward, though. It's the most fun I've had with SC in a long time.

Definitely understand about the traveling aspect. I didn't realize how much I missed seeing everyone until this past weekend. Does this mean you'd consider a trip over here for Evo? I'd love to meet the famous Ring. =)

Then again, maybe traveling all the way to the US crosses that "obsessed" line, haha.
