Sp1d3r Commentary

Sp1d3r

Demon Beaver
First off it is very exciting to step out of the shadow of the internet and put my voice to something. I just want to get the ball rolling on SC commentary and lay down some of the pipe work. Since I'm a beginner, it took roughly 5 to 10 takes on each round. But each time it got a little easier to do and the words came a little faster. It is a lot like learning a new fighter. If you want to do commentary, then you should. You can't become good if you don't even try.

Keung(Amy) VS Ball(Nightmare)

Partisan(Nightmare) VS Vincent (Xianghua)

Nice work, include the character vs screen to get your misc info about each character instead of using the first 15 seconds of the battle.

The few moments of silence should be avoided but they should go with more practice. A co-commentator would help with those silences as well.

Keep up the good work

Also put in ancedotes such as "Im going to Jizz!" such as in this video here.

Good stuff Sp1d3r!

Interesting insights and nice commentary, I like how you are able to make the matches seem interesting by providing some technical knowledge and just hyping it up with your personality. Great work with the structure of the video as well.

I had another point to make, but I can't seem to word it properly right now. I'll get back to you on it if I figure it out haha.

All in all good work, I'm impressed. Keep it up!

P.S some of the moves were labeled incorrectly.
I believe you meant 1A instead of 1A+B and 3AK instead of 1AK.

Edit: The point I wanted to make was pretty much this... I would strictly deal with the technical side of the game play and only make light insights on player choices and play style. Out of respect for the players, I think you gotta consider about the amount of thinking involved in these matches, whether it comes out brilliantly or just terribly. I know that when I watch my matches and see a mistake I recognize what happened, but the audience will very likely misinterpret what goes on.

I only say this because I have seen first hand how watching a video of someone play and playing them in person really differ.

Long story short, more technical insights and try to only touch on the mental aspect of the game where it really shows (huge mistakes like whiffs, bad positioning, eating obvious setups etc).

Don't wanna take anything away from this though, you did a great job.

Hey man
The 1A+B is right, but 1AK should have been 3AK. Thanks for catching that... can't wait to hear some of your commentaries as well >:)

This is something I've been thinking about for a while now. Good work starting it since I'm way too busy (lazy).

Oh ok, I guess I'm just not familiar with the move then.

Anyways I updated my last post:

I'll try to do something soon in regards to a commentary, seeing other people do stuff like this just hypes me up =P

By chance do you mean the UB cancel missed grapple part? I know I was a bit more caustic in this video-- trying to bring a bit more bite this time around I guess. Which part/parts are you talking about specifically?

I was just speaking in general really, only a few parts kinda stuck out.

I'll watch it through again and provide some examples though. It wasn't really that bad, just something I would tread lightly on in the future.

Edit: Ok just went through again. The only thing really was at the end of the match when you gave your post match thoughts. You mentioned things like "changing it up" and "using chars to their full extent" which is fine, but given the context of one match out of a larger set, it's a bit harder for things like that to come into play. For instance, later on in that set Vince completely adjusts and eventually takes the set.

Just some food for thought, hope I'm making sense hehe.

Very true, sir :) The problem for me is not wanting to commentate for a 20 minute video. Maybe out of these long sets I'll choose three matches(first, middle, end) that should show somewhat of progression and keep length down. This should reflect a more true game and the mentality behind it. Thanks for the food (and thank you too lobo :) )

Good job on the commentary. Try to keep talking constantly, there were a couple parts where you seemed to just be watching. Maybe go on about the various options that the players could have done off of certain mix-ups.

Are you sure that wont get annoying though? that is, constantly talking? How long should silence last for?

If you're going to pause I would suggest that you do pause when they perform the mixup/setup or when one of them gets thrown.

I didn't really have trouble with you pausing, more on the location of your pause.

All that said, I'm not a commentator as of yet. Take anything I say with a grain of salt.

I analyze matches in my head, so I bet it's hard as hell to do it while talking. Can you really keep up with the action is the question?

This is fun to watch BTW.

Without looking at the matches.

Amy VS NM
It's all about offense vs defense.

It's a downhill match for NM. The only way for him to generate offense or damage is with throws to pressure Amy into ducking, and whiff punishing with SideStep and backdash or NSS. Otherwise all his other options are very risky and opportunistic.
In addition defensively NM might risk aggressive options like 9B to avoid Amy's mid low mixups.

Amy just does whatever she wants.

Overall I think when the action is going back and forth you want to do play by play. Correct Punishment or missed, Missed Ringout opportunities, missed combos, complementing good reactions like sidestep, gis, JFs...and such. When players back off, spacing around looking for opportunities you have time to anaylze.

SC runs on momentum so if you can point out when that shift happens it gets more exciting.

good stuff so far

I'd like to hear more about how the players are adapting to each other, or how they're adjusting their strategy over time. For example, in the first video, Ball(Nightmare) opted to use a lot of 2Ks in his offense in fear of Amy's pressure, but in the next rounds when he realized Keung was blocking passively he began throwing instead. It helps to put yourself in their shoes and think about what they might be thinking. If I was his opponent, I'd be thinking, "oh, he's throwing now. He's throwing a LOT now. I'll counter that by..."

Also, this is difficult in a fast paced game, but it'd be great if you could discuss the choices the players make, calling stuff that worked "brilliant" or politely commenting on how they could have done better if you disagree with what they did.

Lastly, little nitpick, but when someone "misses" something, and the other player actively defended against it, you should say the other player dodged it instead. Just keep it as positive and respectful to the players as possible, pointing out errors only when they're the most interesting thing to say at the moment. Definitely point out really bad decisions, like re-GIing against NM especially against the edge.
