So after lots and lots of practice, I finally decided to my efforts online and see how I would do. I had gotten to the point where I could do Electrics with Jin's CD1 and CD2 with some reasonably accuracy and I discovered a few combos after lots of practice that seemed pretty damaging (70+) that I could get reliably off. The only issue was trying to find a partner for Jin, but unfortunately, I wasn't too sure on that one. It seemed Lars was a fairly popular choice who was at least reasonably strong, though, so I picked him up and started practicing with him for a few hours.
After that, I went online to try my luck.
Initially I went with the default sets of + or - 3 Preferred. After 15 minutes and no bite, I went ahead and switch it to no restrictions are starting fighting a number of Kyu ranked players. Nearly forty games later, I'm now a 1st ranked dan with 36 losses and 4 wins. I'm not quite sure why the game decided to promote me, but I guess even TTT2's ranking system is trash.
My biggest issue against the online player base was... well I kept getting put on the 2P side and I'm not capable of doing CDs on the 2P side. So I couldn't get access to many of Jin's skills. Despite that, I still had all of Jin's really good stuff to try out like his b+3, d/b+4, 2,4, d/f1,4, 1+2, f+4 and his CDS and Zanshin stances. Yet I couldn't really muster wins against many of the players. None of them seemed particularly good, but they would keep doing really odd stuff that was hard to read and let alone punish. I tried to practice stepping and 2,4 punishing, but it never worked. Every time I attempted b2,1 and got a successful hit on the player, I'd immediately get thrown before I could follow up. 2,4 punishing was difficult because of the range (but d/f1+4 worked often). Often times I would get interrupted by jabs (1... 1... 1...) and while I would block and then attempt a similar quick option (Jin's 2,1) I'd still get interrupted. Ducking and/or attempting to sidestep didn't seem to work either (WS+2 kept getting interrupted) and I repeatedly screwed up the command to ff+2. Not to mention every other juggle combo I practiced for hours on end. I couldn't even get b,f+2,3 to work half the time; a lot of players said this was a good move, but all I got to show for it was being interrupted.
My Lars didn't fair any better. While I practiced a lot of his combos and even found a nice easy one for me to work with and try a Tag Assault with, I could never get his launchers to land (ff+2, uf+4). I started to realize that I didn't really know what Lars' good poke were. B+1+2 almost never worked. B+2,3 did work fairly decently, d/b+2,1 was okay (what do I follow up on this?). ff3+4 worked a little too well I think, and b+1 did alright (is this is main punisher?), but I couldn't find any follow-ups. Thinking I had the advantage after scoring a clean hit, I tried to press the advantage only to get thrown in the end. I guess I'm a little confused about why this happens.
Many of the players I fought with did a lot of unsafe attacks or unsafe strings, many of which I had trouble punishing or pressing any sort of advantage. I screwed up many of the combos I practiced hours on end, and despite punishing a lot of stuff, a lot of players kept eating some punishes. While others did a lot of strings that were difficult to follow or predictable deal with (Lee's d+444 low kicks, or King's d/b+442). Others just kept attacking and I managed to score quite a few b+4s with Lars on CH (kinda slow move, no?)
Anyway, these losses sort of remind me of my attempts to play and learn Tekken 5, by the time I gave up on that game, my Jin had somewhere around 158 loss and only 8 wins. It seems like games like Tekken and Soul Calibur are really difficult for me to be successful at (23% win rate in SC5). But I still want to try and get better, I guess I just need a good team mate for Jin to work with. Maybe I could try Devil Jin now that I can do CD with few issues.. although I don't know what works with DJ... a lot of his stuff looks really gimmicky.
