I have been told that square is the best since oct can mess you up sometimes and suqare is japanese standard i think.
How can an octagonal gate "mess you up"? I've never understood the Japanese obsession with square gates. It seems to me, if you're using an 8-dirctional stick, it should favor all 8 directions equally. Octagonal gates do this. Square gates favor the diagonals over the cardinal directions.
Anyway, its all a matter of preference. I don't think either type of gate is inherrantly better. I, personally prefer an oct gate for the reasons I described above. However, almost all commercially available console sticks use square gates. Just one of the reasons I'm planning on building a custom.
