The Arcade Stick and Convertor Thread & List

I have been told that square is the best since oct can mess you up sometimes and suqare is japanese standard i think.

How can an octagonal gate "mess you up"? I've never understood the Japanese obsession with square gates. It seems to me, if you're using an 8-dirctional stick, it should favor all 8 directions equally. Octagonal gates do this. Square gates favor the diagonals over the cardinal directions.

Anyway, its all a matter of preference. I don't think either type of gate is inherrantly better. I, personally prefer an oct gate for the reasons I described above. However, almost all commercially available console sticks use square gates. Just one of the reasons I'm planning on building a custom.

Anyone know someone reliable that mods VSHG's to work on both PS3 and 360? I love that stick and it sucks going back and fourth between that and the shitty Hori EX style sticks.

I just got my HRAP3 . It will take a while getting used to the stick instead of the dpad. First thing I'm noticing is my response time is slower. Instead of pressing 6A immediately like on the dpad I have to slide 6A. Because on a dpad, as soon as you move you got that direction. With a stick you have to go into the direction first before it's there. It doesn't take long of course, but there will always be more of a delay.

Maybe in time I won't notice it anymore or I become faster with the stick. Second I'm having trouble with the diagonals. Trying to do 1G or 3G is very inconstent for me. Again, something I'll have to get used to probably.

There really isnt a delay, if your talking about the time it takes you to move your wrist to 6 instead of just presing 6 on a pad, in time you'll be able to do that stuff with a flick of the wrist and IMO its faster than moving your thumb around especially for complex directional inputs.

HRAP3, man im jealous lol i went to buy a HRAP.EX and they are gone, I use a DOA4 stick and it makes me cry at times.. it seriously fails at 1, 3, 7 and 9 inputs.

harlekein: I had the same problems you had when I first got my stick. It took me a good week to really get used to it but now I find I'm faster with 236/412 inputs than on the dpad and I'm also a lot faster on the 8wr moves though still choke a little on 33/11 sometimes. All in all it feels much better than the dual shock 3, so much so that I've only got A, B, K, and G mapped and I can play comfortably without relying on shoulder button mappings for stuff like A+K and B+G.

I've been practicing a lot. You have to remap your muscle memories. I'm still trying to find the perfect layout. What do you use?

On my HRAP3:
Square: A
Triangle: B
R1: K
Cross: G

I found this to be the most comfortable layout for me though sometimes I still accidentally hit B with my middle finger when going for A+K but thats because I tend to lay out my right hand flat on over the buttons after a couple hours of continuous play.

I do the same, more or less:
A B K
G

It isn't so much a big deal with SC4 being four buttons. I still find it the hardest playing Guilty Gear on stick because I have to actually use my pinkie :P However, my biggest problems are diagonals and double-taps on stick, especially on reverse. This is the biggest reason why I can't do Axl Bomber loops even though it's the easiest loop in GG, without any need to even FRC x_X I actually meld a couple different ways of holding the stick, cupping the ball under my hand when moving forward and holding it like a pencil when trying to access the back directions. Go figure :/

heh I too find my left hand changing a lot when using the stick I haven't found a comfortable way to hold it and play effectively from both 1P and 2P sides so I'm always readjusting every few rounds.

Thanks for the input guys. I knew that was the 'official' layout, but if it's mostly used it must be comfortable enough, so I'll practice with that.

Do you know if there is enough room in one of those to mod for 360 aswell?

Absolutely. It's quite big.

right now i'm using a neogeo agetec stick modded with sanwa parts suited for the 360 thanks to a ghetto adapter (i used a 360 pad to get the job done)
i would really like to buy a 360 stick but everyone i see is made with crappy materials..i want one with a sanwa stick to put my octagonal restrictor in and buttons to be changed with sanwa ones (like the real arcade pro for ps2)
the other requirement is having button setup like
XY
AB
i'm used to this layout and i don't want to change it

Does anyone know if it's easy to put in an octagonal restrictor into the HRAP3? It probably is, but I would like to get some advise before I start on it. I found a German shop for the parts:
http://www.arcadeshop.de

I'm also replacing the Hori buttons with Sanwa buttons.

Let me know how that goes (pics of the inside too if possible!) I'm thinking about doing the same but I've never opened mine up and won't be able to afford a new HRAP3 for a while if I mess it up.

Using a VSHG (the fixed/newer version). Changed the button wires so I can have the default layout for SC(2, at least)/GG with no in-game configuration. Works wonder.

Also, if someone asks, square gate.

Real men build their own sticks.

Jaxel will be quick to point out all the imperfections with this but i think its cause he's jelious since Queen is awesome in music form, and its on my stick. I'm about to start working on a new stick

This stick has all sanwa parts and is compatable with 360 and ps3. This stick also has an octangular gate..but im thinking about switching back to a square one. The oct gate is great for vf, but the square one might be better for sc since i use 3 and 1 moves alot more.

if anyone is interested in building their own stick PM me and i'll tell ya what you need to get started.

and if you got the money go to crookedjester.com and have jaxel build ya a stick. Its a pinch expensive but its retardedly high quality. His sticks run circles around mine.

to the guy who's gettin sticky buttons...i would recommend buying a soft bristled toothbrush and brushing into the sides of the buttons GENTLY with a little water. don't put wd40 or any of that crap as it corrodes the plastic. also don't use the stick at all, keep it unplugged for 24 hours after you clean it so all the water can dry.

that's what i've always done at least. even if you do spill soda on it or something, do this once a day for a week and your prob should be ok.

questions: how can i get the SCIV stick if i live in Canada? it looks like Amazon and Target won't ship this item to Canada.

if i'm out of luck with this stick, what is a viable alternative? i'd like to keep the cost under 80-100$ if i can.

Canadians, where do you get your sticks?

and are Japanese editions of sticks compatible with my domestic PS3? i looked at play-asia and the Japanese ones are cheaper than the US ones by about 30$. also their SCIV sticks are 20$ more than everywhere else... which makes me not want to buy from them if i can help it.
