What's the purpose of religion? Kind of like the law, except with a promise of being rewarded for not being a dick(and the validity of that promise isn't an issue in this case). Yeah, there are stupid laws, crooked cops, and sometimes ridiculously stupid people become influential in the law, but that doesn't mean law itself is bad or without merit.

How did it start? Wouldn't it make sense that these beliefs and all would come about in very similar manner to law? And what better way to enforce law is there than an invisible, omnipotent, omniscient man that will give you suffering beyond comprehension for being a dick and really really awesome rewards for not being a dick?

We don't all have to agree, but wouldn't it be better if we didn't say the opposing side of the argument is without merit when there's clearly good on both sides of the coin? I don't think it's any better to label all religious people as closed minded hatemongers than it is to say all who aren't believers of Generic Religion #34587436 are evil incarnate and just want to rape toddlers before taking a dump on your car.

...But then this is just me being dumb like usual.

Religion was once more powerful than law.

In England some kings believed in the Divine Right of Kings. Which means they were put their as king by God.

there are surely more than what we can see, it's in you if you do believe in or not.
Jesus? he may exist, just as Zeus may exist as well, so I respect them as entities, I don't feel the need to do any kind of blasphemy.
religion? no, it's just a lie, a lie to take control over us.
what would I pick then?

Religion is just an old way of governing man. Women used to have more power when religion saw them as being close to God because, unlike men, they "created" life. Then, men decided they didn't like not being in power and came up with the more modern religions to over throw the hierarchy of Priestesses who ruled Babylon and Greece.

I think it's interesting that the Nuns from the Catholic church used to be prostitutes the Priests would frequent. They would set up shop near Church's. Location , location, location! Of course, it didn't look good so they became incorporated into the Church's structure. All interesting stuff. But no religion can stop humanity from being a clusterfuck in my opinion. People are either cool or dicks and religions don't seem to have any bearing on the situation.

I am pretty damn sure Jesus did exist. And what Jesus taught isn't what the religions that followed after preach.

See in Theology there's is a pattern. Guy comes and starts teaching people principles of love, nirvana...how to achieve happiness etc. Well eventually he dies, but he's so great with many followers that he goes down in history. Now those that didn't fully grasp his philosophy get these half truth and run with them. By the time they get to you in 2012, you've seen people get killed, cheated etc from religion.

Jesus didn't teach Christianity.
Buddha didn't tech Buddhism.

You get the idea. Except in theology we find that most of these teachings are fundamentally the same. Same God same truth.

Now why do people bother with God. The simple answer is, because the world sucks, it's really a piece of shit world, and any one that tells you otherwise is a self absorbed naive ignoramus. There's nothing great about this world.

The world amazes me in both good and bad ways. I guess a main beef I would have with religion is how much it's held humanity back. The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes (Scopes Monkey Trial) was decided in 1920 and religion is still trying to turn back the clock. That's just one example. For centuries the church had a monopoly on science. Withholding findings or discrediting scientists who's conclusions didn't align with the biblical understanding of things. In Europe "dragons" were utilized by the church to explain why whole villages of "heathens" and dissenters of the church would get decimated. Anyway, I love science and faith has threatened it for too long. We've discovered fractals in the '70's, which if you read up on are pretty amazing. And now we're knocking on the door of "The God Particle" or Higgs boson. I can't wait to see what people will figure out next.

First of all God does exist, second of all Jesus does exist and thirdly human life is nothing, we are basically just insects living with a conscious on this planet.

In Science, they say that energy cannot be created and can only be passed on in a other form. Well in order for the big bang theory to work something must have created that ball of energy to explode.

Also I finished the entire bible and let me tell you this, the old testaments shouldn't be taken seriously most of it is made off Jewish tales, but King David and Salomon did exist and a lot of other stuff. As a Christian, the new testament should be the book you believe. The 4 gospels where all written by different people but they still come with same conclusion Jesus died on the cross(even the Muslims believe it)

In my opinion this is enough to believe but most people stop believing when their life is shit :( and I understand why life is hard my friends. the hardest thing in my life was losing someone important in my life. Well what helped me get through it was understanding that I'm not the only around the world people are always crying and suffering. Even God understood that dying is awful, he made himself man and showed us that even good people could die an awful way. Well by doing so, he gave us hope that we would live once again :)

In conclusion, forget about religion and churches. True religion is your relation with Jesus. it's your choice to live without God but you should understand evolution because it still has it flaws and some stuff can't also be explained.

Sorry for my English:S

I'm glad for you to find purpose through your faith. But for me, the premise that because we don't understand a phenomenon means that the bible's explanation has to be true isn't logical. But from my understanding of the Big Bang theory matter couldn't exist as we know it in the super-dense singularity that supposedly ended up "exploding". As a matter of fact, there was no space for matter to exist in. Sort of like if you pluck a guitar that's not hollow there's no space for the sound to resonate. The big bang created space for high energies to resonate. And as the universe expanded those energies resonated at slower and slower vibrations until they formed matter. I really wish you would have looked into fractals or the Higgs boson before posting. Not so that you would agree with me, but so you would have a better grasp of the concepts I'm speaking of. But anyway, nature can be just as awe-inspiring as any faith to me.

To quote Pink Flamingos, "I am God!"

In all seriousness, I don't believe in any gods for the precise reason that I've yet to see any reason to believe. That may change in the future...

im sorry terminator but i have to tell that even if jesus existed, that probably he did, there´s no way that he could be the son of god, because that´s like saying that my beliefs are over the beliefs of everyone else, you cant say that your religion is the correct one, but neither buddhism or other religions can, so, the best is to believe in things that can actually help us in something, like friends or family. Believing in something you cant see, or feel, or hear, or smell without having a real prove but your faith is just not logic at all.

If human life is nothing, why would God sacrifice his only son to offer us the prospect of salvation?
Usually when someone needs forgiveness, personally I'd just tell them I forgive them, maybe give them a hug too; it's a real shame I don't have a first born son to sacrifice to show them I'm serious.
(that was a joke again, atheism discussions just turn me into a massive prick)
