Heh, shmup. Funny word...I use the term '2d shooter' in a real life conversation, but shmups on the 'net. Anyway, I suck at shmups; bullet hell, old-school memorizers, you name it! Still fun stuff though. I'm surprised I'm still in the top 100 on XBLA for R-Type 1, heh I guess not too many people want to bother with suiciding on stage 7.

So, let's start it off a bit...anyone have a preferred company or style of shooter? Psikyo, Treasure, Cave, Touhou, enemy chaining, medal collecting, bullet reflecting? All of them have their quirks and charms. I think I prefer Taito's stuff, Darius Gaiden and Rayforce had awesome soundtracks and fairly simplistic scoring systems.

Also, here's a bunch of Shmup reviews that you hopefully find entertaining.
 
Ikaruga is probably one of my favorites, even though I'm terrible at it.

Touhou is really pretty. IMO, gameplay suffers, but yeah. It's still fun to play just to have an eyegasm. It also doesn't seem that hard once you've memorized the patterns.

I'm partial to Raiden Fighters Jet since I play that in the college arcade still. They have it, medal collecting/patterns are awesome.

CRS 68k gets a shoutout because it runs on DX4, and can basically be played by any computer ever made...ever.

Warning Forever and Rayhound also get shoutouts because they're free on the internet, and I sunk enough time into those games to be awesome.

Although watching insane people play insanely makes me die on the inside...because I can never be that insane.

whoo..downloading Ikaruga on xbox live (had on gamecube a while ago) once I get my 1600 cboc live points and free watchmen tickets in the mail..WHOOOO
 
Sooooo...anyone playing Raiden Fighters Aces on the 360? It's a compilation of RF1, RF2 and RFJet. I've never played an RF game before, and there's a bunch of stage specific tricks to learn. And after all this time I finally answer my long-pondered question of "what the hell is a Miclus?" Aces also adds the essential features like tate/rotational display, scoreboards, replays, boss rush, different difficulties, training mode, and even lets you keep the stages fixed. No online coop but I hear those weren't too great for Ikaruga and R-Type XBLA anyway...
 
Raiden 1 and 2 are the easiest shmups ever. Raiden 2 is also an enemy-for-enemy model swap of Raiden 1, but adds 2 new weapons and a new bomb (the new weapon makes the game even easier than Raiden 1). Still, they're fun enough.

I'm sure everyone has already played Warning Forever, but it's a pretty good time waster.
 
I've been having alot of fun with Fantasy Zone on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Good little break from SC.
 
Touhou is definitely my favorite. I like that there's an equal balance of power between how much you, the player, kick ass and how much the bosses kick ass. Also the sound design is delicately handled such that your ears aren't bleeding from the amount of enemies you're scrapping and the amount bullets you fire.

Anyone ever play Blazing Star for the Neo-Geo? God that game was fun and I have no idea why.

DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou Black Label FTW... It COULD have come out in America, but Microsoft is a bunch of assholes.

Any cave shooter is good... ESPGaluda, Mushihimesama, Ibara, etc... Homura is good too, but I forgot who made it.

Of course, cant forget to mention SEXY PARODIUS or RADIAN SILVERGUN or PANZER DRAGOON and TWINKLE STAR SPRITES!
 
R-type delta is amazing. Its on PSN network, i highly recomend it.
Gradius 5 is a must own.
UN squadron for the snes is pretty good too

Ikaruga is my all time fav though, radiant silvergun is a close second.

I'm such a whore for treasure

and r-type did come out for the sms (sega master system) as well as teh turbographx
