This here is my little scrap of nowhere.

Hey guys, with Soul Calibur V's imminent arrival I thought it would be nice to throw my characters here for your scrutinization.

Firstly, if you want Final Fantasy characters, superhero characters, TV show characters and the like then you're in for a disappointment since I don't have any. Personally I find that such characters were designed with a very specific aesthetic in mind and trying to replicate that in SCIV is a fruitless endeavour. I'm not saying it's the "wrong" way to do things, it just doesn't appeal to me. My characters are my own, which does appeal to me.

Secondly, I've read some other topics here and seen some great creations. It seems that a degree of limitation is a good thing when it comes to character creation. Whether it's ethnicity or something else, having a rough set of rules and personal do's and don'ts seems to bring out the best in character creation. It gives people a little personal challenge which encourages more thought to be put into their creations. This is a good thing.

As for presenting them, spamming you with pictures will cause a lagfest. I don't want to do that. A 15 minute movie showing Critical Finishes will get really boring really fast. I don't want to do that. Instead I've made a slideshow, which seems to be the most efficient way of doing things.

The music is Two Steps from Hell- United We Stand, Divided We Fall. So even if you don't care for the actual characters you can still listen to some nice music.

I hope you enjoy it.

Two Steps From Hell? Oh god yes my ears are loving this.

Err..Righto, characters! Out of all of them, I have to say my favorite one was Dartec. Eurydice was really awesome too, as was Festrada!

Looking forward to their stories, if you intend to post any.

A lil bit too much fantasy/not etnic for my tastes

BUT

CaS Universe is split in 95% crap and 5% quality

Some/many of these definitely end up in that 5%, good job

The song gave your CAS some epic points to some CAS I liked. Hopefully, SCV will bring out more creativity from all of us...

Cheers very much for the replies, guys (rhyming like a champ...or is that chump?).

Thanks, DarkSoul.

Ha! I'm glad you liked the music choice, Lord Alondite. I made a sandwich listening to that...lunch never felt so dramatic. Yeah, Dartec, while perhaps not being overwhelmingly unique has been around since SC3 where he had the other Nightmare Helm with the red hair on it. I try to keep little motifs running with the characters. With him it's whitish armour and a red hair helm of some sort. Had the old helm been in I'd have used it. Alot of nice things were dropped from SCIII. The helm may be overused but it fits with the "spiny-ness" of his shoulders and scythe (Myrtu, I think it's called? The picture doesn't give the best view of it.). Eurydice, however, was the last character I made (slot 50) and was a pain in the arse because by the time I got to that point I'd used alot of pieces already and was trying desperately to give her something unique. I like the cleric-type thing, though. I'm glad I remembered that chest armour existed. Festrada took a while (he started off using Xianghua's brush weapon with a big hat...he's come far since then). At the end of the day I wanted a character who was unpredictable, perhaps a little bit morally ambiguous and Voldo's style serves that purpose really well once you remove the BDSM look from the equation.

As for stories, I'm not sure. 48 out of the 50 shown are all part of the same story (Harlequin and Woden are separate) and that story isn't linked to Soul Calibur at all, hence the lack of ethnicity in the designs. Karn did have one from SCIII which was linked but that was a) ginormous, b) tenuous (he only encountered Nightmare- who wrecked him and left him scarred) and c) crap. We'll see how it goes in SCV, some characters might get changed around, some might get dropped altogether if I can't get them working right due to moveset cuts. I could give short descriptions of how and why I made them the way I did, but full character bios would take ages. 50 characters is a lot.

Thank you very much, Gatsu. I know what you mean, I know there's a few that are weaker than others here (Grimfold leaps to mind), however as mentioned above I didn't really want to follow ethnic guidelines. The guidelines I followed were a) avoiding pure black or white, b) 50-50 gender split, c) minimum 100% health and d)faction colours. These might sound bat crap crazy and totally nonsensical but not using black or white can help make for more interesting colour schemes, the gender split helps...because of my OCD apparently, the faction colours help by incentivising putting a third or more colour in. It's the flash colours that catch your eye and help define the character. The health thing is mainly because I enjoy fannying around in Story Mode to blow off steam but yeah, all 50 of these guys have a minimum of 100% health. Kongtian Armour is terrible for this (well for me it halved the health on just about everyone I put it on) which is why Kendra gets her own close up.

I did have a fifth rule to use every style at least once. Then I made a Lizardman CAS. I hated this Lizardman CAS. I deleted this Lizardman CAS. I abandoned the rule.

As long as you can get a sense of character from a design then everything else is subjective. By that I mean everything that the character is including the weapon, the voice and the outfit point toward him or her being something. That's how I look at it anyway. Tiberius might look rather understated but that's his character: He's practical and pragmatic. He doesn't care for the elaborate crap that Dartec might wear, for example. He gets stuff done.

Yeah Pocky Yoshi, the music helps to mix things up a little bit and helps fuel imagination. Well it does for me, anyway. From what I've seen of SCV's CAS people should be able to come up with some really unique things now. Stats from gear is gone, tattoos, scars, patterns, weapon colours, more clothing options, tons of things which can help make a character truly unique. Oh and let's not forget the different builds of body. Lots of good stuff.

Riiiiight. This post is rather big...sorry about that...um...probably rambled a little bit there...on the bright side I did use paragraphs...uh...if you did get this far, thank you but I'm sorry but you don't get anything. It may be a new year but the world is still cruel like that. I know. Rough times. Happy New Year!

Nice to see I'm not the only freak that makes videos for his originals lol. Check out mine, it's in the link on my signature.

Alright, got a little bit more free time so I'm depositing some flashier images for some characters. Enjoy!

Bahl (you can see his legs!):

Vyse (just a nice closer shot):

Vallus (you can actually see his face here!):

Dartec (has a headache...you can also see his weapon clearly):

I'll shove some more pictures here later on.

I'll be sure to take a look at your collection, Norik. I've not had the chance to comment on anyone else's creations but the next free chance I get I'll definitely do my best to put some incredibly witty and informative responses together. I'll most likely fail but it's the trying that's important...right?

Oh...right...crap.

Lord Alondite: It's a VCAP800 capture device (for mac) I use. It's not super amazing but it gets the job done (about £30 or so from amazon). And yes, Dartec be pimpin'.

Here's 4 more pics...because I can.

Kallim strikin' a pose where you actually see his weapon. He's a rogue-ish character and the Chained Kozuka (I think they're called) look quite "improvised". It suited him rather well.
Still13.jpg

Salik being all mystical and enigmatic...with glowy pink fingers. Swish.
Still3.jpg

Gemir looking slightly insane...she is bat crap crazy, though.
Still32.jpg

Myst looking thoughtfully at...something...probably the horizon. She's supposed to be a strategist.
iGrabberSnapshotmys.jpg

Well that's me for now. I'll get some more up later, probably.
