todays music sucks

Believe it or not, Damnation and a Day is my FAVORITE album. Seriously. I can't describe the surge of pure awesome that goes through me whenever I hear a song from that album. Not to mention the theme was just so fucking poetic it makes me cry. "Satan's side of the story..." I believe is how Dani described it, but in more words.

Nymphetamine was my first Cradle album, and I fell in love with the songs like Absinthe With Faust (how can anyone not see the lyrical AND musical genius in that song?) and Overdose.

As for Thornography, it gets waaaay too much hate. Sure, it was guitar heavy - but it was different and still brutal. Dani's getting old and can't keep up the same vocal perfection, so he tried a different style of singing. I respected that and I actually liked it.

Bleh, sorry. Touchy subject for me; I absolutely adore Cradle.
Well said. I was first introduced to older cradle which quickly grew on me due to my fascination with vampires. Cradle would always break away from the chaos of their songs, usually to some atmospheric and surreal piece, like 2:24(or 3:45) in cruelty or the end of tearing the veil from grace. Very old cradle followed punk, and gradually through the 90s started to include much heavier classical influences. My initial reaction to Damnation was bad because it was different. Luckily I eventually went back and listened/realized how good the album truly is. With Thorn, my inital reaction was *shrug* because it seemed that they did away with the classical influence and started following pop music. The arrangements were simpler and I had to come to terms that cradle was a much different band than what I first started listening to. Still good, but nothing can compare to nostalgia which is probably why I don't listen to the newer stuff

I know what you mean 100%. When I was younger, I would daze off in some surreal fantasy whenever I listened to their older stuff. I would always imagine ancient Greece or some shit and just get lost. I remember the first song I heard that made me daze off was their remake of Iron Maiden's Fear of the Dark. God, that song is so beautiful.

Their sound may have changed tremendously over the years, but they're still influenced heavily by classic and ancient times. Sure, they may add more fantasy into the mix now-a-days, but that only helps to stimulate the imagination - one reason I still daze off when listening to them. And of course, no matter what new sound they have, they can always be relied on to have the most ingenious lyrics to be read. That's one reason I love them so much; Dani is a fucking novelist through song.

I wasn't so sure about Thornography at first, either, but after listening to it and reading the lyrics, I really started to love it. Its different, sure, and I've never lost myself in London or Greece or Bathory days or Eden times, but I still admire the work and sound they managed to output. Call me a fanboy, but I'm a Cradle fan till the day I die.

tearing the veil from grace

Unrelated, but I found this song waaaay too late in my life. After I had thought I heard it all, I found this song and figured "eh, its not going to be anything special." Within the first 30 seconds, I was, literally, honestly, 100% truth, in tears.

Okay remember that with music there is so much out there you have to broaden your horizons. Listen to things other than the radio and listen to genre you wouldn't listen to otherwise. Also don't be afraid to listen to foreign imports. Most importantly though good music doesn't find you, you have to find good music. Anyway here are a few songs that I like and btw genre's and languages vary greatly.

That's what I said.
Yeah, but I meant to emphasize the second part.

Eh, it does more harm than good. A clean, trained voice or instrument is always more important than the filter you put it through, not the other way around.
Filters in no way make producing music more accessible, unless we're talking about something like auto-tune.

I was thinking more along the lines of music composition programs that make it pretty effortless to put out mediocre songs on a whim, but I guess music that uses real instruments isn't plagued with this problem as much.

Real instruments are most affected by this problem. Hiring someone to play on a track will always sound better than using a synthesizer, but is more expensive. This makes finding a studio gig all that more difficult. Even though the quality of synthesized instruments is growing immensely, the quality standard of music in general is descending because hardly anyone can actually play an instrument well anymore, or knows the instrument well enough to write for it properly. Auto-tune and vocal retouching filters eliminate the demand for good singers, so much that it has become widely aesthetically acceptable in pop/rock music to completely vaporize a vocal layer just to hide an artist's pitch problems. Composing music for an orchestra is 100x more accessible now that you need no experience with orchestration, you just need a decent sound library and know your way around Finale or Sibelius.

Making something easier for someone doesn't mean it will increase their skill level. It will sooner hinder that.

I don't understand why people say "I'm 15 and I like (insert music that is popular with the older generation)" I don't give a shit how old you are. Anyways... yeah most music now tends to be horrible, what with auto-tune and not needing to write shit that has any meaning. All you need is a catchy hook (looking at you soulja boy) and the sheep will listen to it and call it fucking gold. Good music is out there and not that hard to find you just have to be willing to go out and look for it... or use pandora.

Most importantly though good music doesn't find you, you have to find good music.

Couldn't have said it better myself. BTW, listened to those bands. Best one imo was Pendulum. Reminded me a bit of a band I used to like called Prosaics.

Let me just start off by saying not everyone in todays music sucks but many do! I'm 15 but I love mj, the Beatles, madonna, cher, bruce Springsteen, led Zeppelin, the goo goo dolls for ex......there's too many great artist to list,
Kiddo, there's a lot of these band's progeny out there. Artists who grew up on them and love them every bit as much as you do. You just have to go looking for them. And heck, you might even find there's some new stuff that's pretty good too. A few random recommendations from me, I hope you find something you like:

Feel free to check out any of the ones below as well. Of course remember that if you don't like anything we recommend there's a lot more out there.

'60's-90's was the best music imo. Im 15 and I preferr all that, where it was singing instead of yelling, actually playing the chords and music, rather than programming it so you hit 1 key on keyboard and you have your whole damn song.

People don't sing anymore? They only play keyboards?
