Why do the Critical FInishes change for Yoda?

Did Lucasarts ban him from being ultra-pwned or something?

Every time I've critical finished Yoda it's been some weak-sauce version that doesn't cut away to black.

Is it the same for Vader?

I don't know the cause, but I think all characters have 2 CFs. Just so happens that you keep getting the alternative(the weak one) when facing Yoda.

also, I 'd like to take this time to add that I think all the CF's are pretty damn corny, and wouldn't mind seeing them wiped from the game completely. Why couldn't Namco just give you a free counter hit? [/mini rant]

Well, I think its fine. If you Soul Crush your opponent then you don't need to do it and you shouldn't be getting Soul Crushed anyway or its your own fault for not being aggressive enough.

Soul Calibur has always been regarded as an aggressor's fighting game and this just ensures that approach is adhered to.

but I think all characters have 2 CFs

omfg wtf? ive done ~75+ critical finishes (about to get achievement) with taki and it's always the same one.....

my guess is it depends on matchup? (I only play offline with friends so the matchups are limited)

There is only one critical finish, with the exception of Yoda. His happens to be different because of his size and certain CF animations wouldn't work on him or would have to be redone.

On the side conversation, CF's are an interesting way to mix up the game and include different tactics. If you're getting CF'd often, GI more, be more agressive, side step those verticals if you see them coming, etc. etc.

That seemed quite simple to me.
I like to use critical finishes if the oppurtunity arises.

A small question related to the Star Wars stuff. What's with the 3rd star wars stage? On the character edit Vader and Apprentice are there by default. It cycles through the random box. But you can't play on it. Why is this?

The two playable Star Wars scenarios are inside the big one. It's like a huge place, with just two areas playable.

Critical finishes are fine on a gameplay level. The part that annoys me is how drawn out they are. Just make it some quick 3 second move and move on the the next round. It's not like you won the match. I even get annoyed when I'm the one performing it.

I think they're cool.. It's just that most of them aren't flashy enough and are dull. Taki's seem to be the coolest I've seen so far. Everyone elses is just like a quick hit or something.

A friend and I were playing a session and we got about 5 CF's off in 10 online battles. It's basically the most fun I have in the game. I can't believe anyone would grumble about a badass cut scene in the middle of a fighting game that only happens when you whoop someone's ass. What the heck is wrong with you people.

Oh yeah they were all Siegfried and Nightmare CF's...pretty damn cool looking if you ask me.

This is why I like Mina's. Short and sweet.

Cassie's, while cute the first few times, is groan inducing. Lol.

Ah ok, thanx for clearing that up. Still stand by my other comment though. Save that crap for Killer Instinct or MK.

I think that CF's still aren't completely understood yet. There really shouldn't be any complaint about these as an automatic KO since SC has RO's and they require a lot less setup. While you can say that CF's encourage aggression, they really should be encouraging a better defense (evading, GI, etc.). Think of it as Namco's way of saying "Instead of just blocking you need to take advantage of the other defensive options you have".

With that said, they could use some improvement. More GB moves should do the more Soul Gauge damage (it is a move that Breaks Guard, it'd only makes sense) and have frame advantage-- give GB's a use outside of having cool lightning effects. The presentation could be better too. It really disrupts the flow of match. They shouldn't build them up so much. Just flash the character's charge animation really fast then go straight into the cutscene. It'd probably help if the HUD stayed on screen too.

One other thing I wanted to mention is people should be smarter about using CFs. Don't use them whenever you get a soul crush, especially if your opponent was just about to die anyway and it's not the match round yet. Better to finish them off, and then work to get a soul crush the next round when they have more health. Otherwise you CF a person who was going to die anyway, and next round they start with a fresh Soul Gauge.

An intense Soul Calibur match won't tolerate players sitting and waiting for stuff to happen. With tactics like Ring Outs you always need to be willing to push your opponent by any means. Move around them, prevent them from getting in your face and otherwise not cowering behind a block. Blocking is vital but only as a way to read your opponent's movements. Trying to win by attrition (both as a defender or attacker) can't succeed in this game.

Even in previous Soul Caliburs, without the Critical Finish and Soul Gauge hanging over your head, there were a dozen responses to people who wouldn't come to you and they all learned their place. Critical Finishes just place a real price on not playing Soul Calibur aggressively and smartly.

yodas too short to CF properly, so the chars have to wing it and you end up with that crappy thing.

no. seriously. hes too short for the CF animations.

Sorry for the bump, but I thought that I'd note that Algol's CF against Yoda is pretty unique...as in most other characters do an UB that they usually have readily available to them in there moveset, Algol has a unique animation that he can't do outside of a CF against Yoda. Algol's only other UB attack is his super bubble cannon from the sky so I guess Namco thought that wasn't "CF" enough or something.

The 3rd Star Wars stage I've seen (on videos) is a moving platform travelling diagonally. It does not represent a huge place encompassing the two playable stages.

Typically, any kind of licensed material, particularly mascot characters, receive special treatment so that nothing overly violent or demeaning happens to them in a third-party title. I only have the 360 version so I don't know if Vader receives the same CF animations as other characters, but in most cases that's the reason. You can see this in a lot of other games too, such as Gran Turismo where the cars are always pristine, or even dating as far back as Punch-Out!! where Mario was the referee rather than a contender.

I've seen this happen once also.

Siegfried did a CF 2 times that I saw, that looked like SC2 NM's 236B unblockable. I think it mightve been agaisnt Yoda too.
