Xiba Non-Gameplay Discussion Thread

Yeah that's definitely "Xia"
When I said "See-ah" it wasn't so much a "See ya!" but as one syllable. I don't know how you'd type out a pronunciation but I wrote that with a bit of sesame street going in my head.
To be more specific. Say "ya!" just like that, and add a bit of a "C" or a "see" tone to it.
Or you can wait till the game launches and people from this region start hosting videos to hear it =X

On a fun note: A friend who takes Japanese tells me 夏 is "Natsu" too... Google translate it!

Master_thespian : Yesssss.. I can stop refreshing multiple pages waiting for that trailer to pop up!

Edit : I like how Xiba complains he's hungry after doing his CE.

Yeah, the Japanese pronunciation for 燕蕾夏 is tsubomi tsubami natsu, which basically gibberish if you try to translate it. Best non-literal trasnlation I can come up with is, Swallow (as in the bird), Summer bud.

And I get ya on the pronunciation of "xia", but I've never heard a fluent "EE" sound from someone enunciating "xia". Its always sound like "sha" to me. I guess its just one smooth sound like "shia" but a stronger stress on the "uhh" sound?

Think you can get a better translation on Xiba's weapon's name? I'm having a hard time figuring that one out.

It means he's replacing Kilik, Yun AND Seung Mina.

I kid. I'm guessing you got "3 Job Stick".
And with the japanese pronunciation I actually thought it was a play on the 3 Kingdoms (San go kun).

Ok, this looks like it could be the right translation. It's pretty cool and fits in with the character background I guess.
According to a friend, there's something in Buddhism that's along the lines of the three karmas. In chinese they are
身業、口業、意業.
This makes sense because 三 is 3 業 is Karma 棍 Stick/Bo Staff.
Seems to be referred to as "Three Gems" in English.

suuusuuu : Unfortunately, it seems so.

The fact that it's a staff almost guarantees that Xiba's Kilik replacement. Could be in combination with Yun. But what I noticed was his stance is actually more similar to Mina then Kilik. Kilik holds his staff upward and Mina holds it downward. Could be a Mina and Yun replacement. I know it's only a stance but if Mina is returning as she was I don't think her stance would change and it would be pretty dumb to make two rod characters hold there weapon the same exact way.(which is why kilik and mina held theirs differently)

May be way off but who knows. I'm a Kilik fan but either way I'm disappointed, I think both Kilik and Mina have unique styles worth preserving in the game.

I see. I also thought you were putting emphasis on the "S" making it sound like, well, "sss" instead of the light "shi-". My bad on that one. And it seems the complaining about being hungry is his taunt, so one can definitely spam that after a round victory for giggle.

@Dman: Nice observation on the stance. I'd be sadden if Mi-na doesn't return, but I guess some have to go.

Cool. That makes a lot more sense than what I was getting.

Anyway, the three karmas are definitely related to Hinduism. I don't think it's related to the three gems, but rather on the literal three karmas if Hinduism. They are; Sanchita, Prarabdha, and Kriyamana (spelling might vary a lot, here). My Hinduism is limited, but these karmas are related to reincarnation and the sum of all karma one can receive in a lifetime.

Anyway, I guess the most logical translation would probably be "Rod of Three Karmas".

This is reaching, but I wonder if the name of his staff has some hints on the way he'll fight in the game? Of course, no character in Soul Calibur has ever had some correlation to the name of their sword and their fighting style... to my knowledge at least.

Heh the guy who gave me the Rod of 3 Karmas translation also managed to point out something similar but with Buddhism. Unfortunately it's mostly in chinese and I can't find an english counterpart online (yet)

In a nutshell, there are three things to strive for (or not to do) in order to achieve purity and avoid Kharma (Reincarnation). Something like the ten commandments I guess.
The things you do, the things you say, the things you think. If you can govern these three things in your life you will achieve purity or something like that.

My point being is that it sounds a LOT like the three karmas you just mentioned from Hinduism.

Yeah Xiba's looking like hes fun to play, something about the way he hold's his staff reminds me dangerously of Mina though.

Also the way he looks, is extremely strange. i can't exactly remember who though.

I know its been speculated and is impossible to prove one way or the other yet I think Xiba actually has a high chance of being the son of Seong Mi-na and Yun Seong. Ignoring the physical features like red hair and similar attitudes. The most obvious reason one could see Xiba being the son of those two is the fact that Seong Mi-na was trained by Kong Xiuquiang as was Xiba. The personality is like Yun-Seong and more than anything else the character is only 16 which means he could have been born a year after the events of Soul Calibur IV to get to his 16 years of age. One of the youngest characters and way too similar in looks/attitude to Yun and Seong to be a coincidence.

The connection to him traveling with Maxi, Leixia, and Natsu can be seen through Kong Xiuquiang which is Xianghua's father (Maxi knows Xianghua), Leixia is Xianghua's daughter), and Xiba being trained by Kong means that Maxi was likely propositioned as a bodyguard (sitter) for the children. Natsu probably joins up later on.

I think Xiba is the replacement for Seong Mi-na and Yun-seong. He (in that very quick video) seems to have the kicking type moves of Yun while has the spear moves of Seong. He may also be a replacement for Kilik if they do not wish to have copy characters but nothing is out yet.

The lack of a family or last name makes it more and more likely that it is not being revealed because he is related to previous characters.

this is mere speculation but I think we might find this out eventually when we play through the game. It just seems possible in my mind.

I would much prefer him as being the child of Seong Mina and Hwang, while retaining qualities from Yun Seong, but that's just me.

I actually got a fortune cookie once that had a quote from Ghandi and it said "Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony."

Lol, so I think it's crystal clear now that Xiba's weapon is referring to this Trinity that is prevalent in so many cultures/religions.

Reave: You mean 3 fanbases with 1 monkey.

Well techniquely 2 unless he can either switch weapons before or during battle because he doesn't appease the Yun's fan in me in the least bit

Xiba's name seems to be Chinese, not Korean. And he is most likely an orphan abandoned in the wild, his profile suggests that. Also, I can't see Mi-na abandoning her child somehow in China suddenly, doesn't make much sense.
there is no X in korean, so we can assume a pinyin transciption. i guess project soul is deliberately being ambiguous on this. it's odd that they did not provide any hanzi characters, which they usually do for chinese characters.
EDIT: there seems to be an X in Korean, but only under certain phonological conditions. Xiba does not seem possible to me as a korean transcription, but i'm no expert on that. korean, anyone?
EDIT: checked again. no X.

i have to contradict the Mi-Na theory, though. as she was trained by Kong Xiuqiang, who now trains Xiba, she could just have sent him there for his studies. Or she's dead. Or something.

also, has anybody noticed that there is not one chinese character in the whole series who does not have an X in his/her name? except for Li Long of course...(who's a rip-off of Li Xiaolong, though :P)
EDIT: duh, i forgot about Hualin. and Meimei -_-
