Zune HD

I wanted to get some feedback on M$'s new device since it is about to drop in a few days. The specs look hot. Plus you can browse the web and listen to HD Radio.

Is anyone else planning to get one? Do you have any feedback on the previous model? Is there a better PMP you want to recommend? Let's hear it.

It's pretty tight, I'm definitely thinking about getting one. My only gripe is, only 16 or 32GB. Why not more?

I will be getting one... I switched over to Zune a few years ago and I never regretted it. The interface on the device, as well as the inferface of the software is just SOOOOO much better than anythign Apple has to offer. And this new ZuneHD looks absolutely stunning... $300 for a 32GB SSD device, with 720p video out...

Plus, if you pay for music, any music you buy for $1 is DRM free... but you ALSO have the choice to instead do a $15/month subscription that lets you download as much music as you want; that music does have DRM though.

I thought the same thing but it's using a SSD instead of a HDD which would have more space but use more energy and make the device larger. Once SSDs becomes more commonplace, you'll see PMP devices with larger memory capacities.

But what's really turning me on about the Zune HD is that it has HD Radio and internet capability in a small device. I'll know tomorrow if I will dive right in and get one.

Well anyone interested in buying my old Zune 8GB? Comes with the device, all the cables, the boxes/manuals, as well a modified leather case. The official leather case for the Zune only has a slot for headphones; you must take the Zune out of the case in order to charge it or plug it into your computer. I modified the case with a dremel in order to cut a hole so that you don't need to take the zune out of the leather case; and I did a really good job at it too... $100?

So I have my new ZuneHD, and the new Zune 4.0 software... and I have to say... wow... As much as I like my ZuneHD, I can admit that it really isn't anything special. Its your standard touch screen media player (yes, it is a MEDIA PLAYER, not a "game system" like the iPod or any bullshit like that); great software, beautiful screen savers while playing, incredible video quality... but except for the fact that the audio quality in iPod devices are shitty, its not something you won't also get with an iPod touch...

That being said, what makes the ZuneHD so amazing is the new Zune 4.0 software with Zune Pass... I mean holy shit this crap is amazing. iTunes has the ability to search for "similar music", but never like this. With the Zune Pass, you can download as much music as you want for only $15 a month; so it would make sense that they could take this similar music searching to the whole new level... and they did it with something called "SmartDJ"... Lets say I like the song "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder, and I want to find similar music like it.

Well the Zune Social actually builds similar music based on the tastes of other users; so it will trawl the system and look for similarities... So if a user has "Superstition", what other music do they have? It searches for the highest occurences and builds on that. So I simply right click and select "Play Smart DJ Mix" and in under a second I have a 20 song playlist of music that may interest me. And since I have Zune Pass, it doesn't just play 30 second samples of the songs like it does on iTunes, it plays the FULL SONG. Did I mention that I could also do all this on the Zune itself?

The ZuneHD also has a built in HD Radio; and as many of us know by now, with HD Radio, it actually includes the song information as it plays on the radio (this is why those with BMW's and really expensive sound systems can see extended information about the music). So lets say you hear on the radio a song you like; with iTunes, you would have to download Pandora or something to identify the song, then download the song itself seperately from iTunes. With Zune Pass, you just click the "download song" button, and its yours!

I can definately see Zune Pass changing the way people buy music. Yes, its $15 a month, but you can download as much music as you want, and the DRM lets you put it onto as many as 3 media devices (doesn't have to be a Zune). Sure, when you cancel your Zune Pass subscription, all your Zune Pass music disappears with it... but you can also buy music the standard $1 a song method; so if you really don't want to lose it, you can buy it. Not to mention, with the $15 a month, you get 10 song purchase credits, so really it only costs $5 a month.

If you're fed up with iTunes and Apple, and you want to try something new, Microsoft actually offers a superb service with the Zune. As I said before, you are NOT locked down with the Zune Software like you are with iTunes; if you decice one day that you want to leave the Zune Garden, you can simply take your entire purchased library elsewhere. It won't be complicated, and Microsoft doesn't obsfucate your music folders like iTunes does.

The Zune Pass thing has always intrigued me. It'd be essentially a way for me do what I already do with regular downloads and last.fm but legally, much more easily and from anywhere and any time as long as I can get a wifi connection. It might be enough to make me give up my Gen 1 iPod Nano with Rockbox. Too bad it's not available here.

Oh yeah... something else I discovered with Zune Pass... if you have Zune Pass, you can log into your account on http://social.zune.net and listen to your music there. You don't even need the Zune software. So if you go to someone's house, and forgot your Zune or something, you can just go to the website and since you have Zune Pass, you can play all of your music that way; it will stream directly from the music servers. As long as the music you have is available from Microsoft, it will stream the music. However, it doesn't have a lot of Japanese music; its in their database, but not available for play or purchase; so it won't stream it. I'm just amazed that stuff is in the database at all, they literaly database EVERYTHING, even if they don't offer the music.

Microsoft Silverlight (their version of flash) is required though.

More proof that the Zune is better than iPod/iTunes...

My hard drive had a catastrophic failure this week. I lost everything, including all of my music. So with my new windows install, what did I do? I plugged my Zune into my computer and it REVERSE synced all the music from my Zune to my computer (none of my music has DRM). No third party applications required, no file obfuscation. Easy. Zune rules!

I have a zune HD its pretty nice the only complaint I have for it is: when surfing the web the battery life is terrible

My 80GB Zune took a shit and died two weeks ago, but it was unquestionably the best MP3 player I have ever owned so I ordered the Zune HD. It's been two weeks no and no news.

I HATE WAITING!!!!

Do you still keep 10 songs at the end of every month, Jaxel? I was really interested in the service a while back but it just dropped off my radar for some reason.

Yeah, the service still has the 10 free songs at the end of the month...
