What are some good anime to watch?

I've always hated the DBZ rewrites so my short ass list is:

Akira - just a movie...a classic
Fullmetal Alchemist - didn't dig it at first but it really picked up after they stopped the filler crap and amped up the maturity
Avatar The Last Airbender - not true anime...but it takes what anime does right and does everything else infinitely better
Evangelion - My favorite of all time. Be warned however, this is a VERY VERY deep anime that goes into ultra mind fuck mode. You have to watch it with dedication otherwise you'll miss the point. It's a you'll love it or you'll hate it anime (often people that hate it missed the point of it entirely and have bad reasons too)

I've also been told Deathnote is actually good as I avoided it mistaking it for another Bleach type one.
 
This is gonna be a little different. You probably won't be a fan of this, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. :p Why not try out a Kamen Rider series ? Technicially it's Tokusatsu, but it's kinda anime based in a way. I'd recommend Kamen Rider Kabuto or Kamen Rider 555 for first time viewers (Really good in terms of action and story). Reason I recommend this is because alot of the anime now a days pales in compared to the anime in the 80s and 90s. Heck the last awesome anime I've seen in the 00s was Gurren Lagann. KR kinda gives a nice break from the same old anime that has been repeated over and over again. Just adding my 2 cents. ^_^

P.S. Even thou the series is mind fuck, Evangelion is awesome. :D
 
Any movie by hayao miyazaki is always epic.

If you havn't already watch spirited away and howls moving castle.
 
FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Afro Samurai, FMA, Avatar. I've watched a bit of Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Madlax and those were good but not really my thing. Other people like them a lot.

I like lots of girly animes but you don't strike me as the kind for those.

Sadamitsu: The Destroyer | 1 season 13 episodes, completed
Shootfighter! Tekken | 3OVA's, continues in manga?
Basallisk | 1 season, 24-26 episodes, completed
RahXephon | 1 season, 26 episodes, completed
High School of the Dead | 1 season(so far), 13 episodes(so far), Episode 4

All are exceptional. High School of the Dead is new, and I would definitely hop on the fanwagon for it. It's pretty good so far.
 
Nah, good is good and bad is bad.

It's worse if you have to qualify suggestions. "It's good . . . for a giant robot show." What the hell is that? Is it good or is it only worth watching if you like giant robots way too much?

Ruroni Kenshin (but please oh please, the real version, not the crap Hulu has online)

Those are my favorites. DBZ and Naruto are guilty pleasures of mine.

Well some people have (arguably) bad tastes, and if you recommended a bad anime that was in line with that person's taste, it would be a good suggestion.
 
Kuroshitsuji- One of my favorites
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu- first season is pretty good
Zombie loand- pretty cool anime

Not saying it would be a problem for a person to say that they want to watch a certain type of show, and yes, a lot of people have terrible taste. But if the request is for just good anime, then Azumanga has every right to be there next to FLCL and Samurai Champloo, without any qualifiers.
