Taki's Replacement Revealed?!

  • Admin
This week Daishi has been teasing that he might do an early reveal of one of the two silhouettes posted about a week ago. He's been asking which of the two silhouettes people want to see most, and today he gives us an early look at a brand new female character!

Daishi has been rather glib on whether or not Taki would be returning. However, with the reveal of this character, it can be assumed that Taki may only play a secondary role in Soul Calibur 5.

Thanks Daishi! Comic Con 2011 is only a week away, stay tuned for the next reveal!

This something I have been wondering for a long time. How come English voice acting is so hated? I think alot of the SC cast sound good in english.
Is there a game out there that has did english voice acting well?
can someone explain please

I dunno. I actually like a lot of the voices in English and don't think too many of them sound any better in Japanese. Can't think of one English voice I don't like, so much as actually getting to hear some of the corny stuff they say. "You shall forever remain in my heart," wtfux?

Blazblue had good English voices. (not everyone agrees)

Really, the reason ppl hate English voices is often the same reason old-school anime fans tend to hate dubs, they're used to the other voices, plus they consider them more "pure".

The argument may be invalid, but I agree with it sometimes, especially when the English voices are bad.

All I got to say is "I told you!" (Those people know who they are that I'm directing this at.)

Anyway I think that the fact that she has blond hair is obviously gonna mean she's going to have an outgoing personality. She's probably going to be a little clumsy and silly and I would welcome a character like that into the soul caliber series seeing that their wasn't anyone like that yet. (Dampierre doesn't count.) I like this new person and hope she fills in a good roll especially seeing that she might replace taki.

Yes, but surely she shouldn't have blonde hair at all in the first place?? Seig, Raph, Ivy (platinum blonde) etc have fair hair because they are European - its simply not possible that a 1600's-era Japanese girl has strawberry blonde, valley-girl hair. I know many may say "yes but this is a fantasy game with giant golems etc", but getting the basics right (ie applicable hair colour) is important to keep some sense of a real-world setting. And, even if she turns out to be either half Japanese or another Westerner living in Japane, then surely having THREE (Setsuka, Arthur and now possbly Blondie) is massive overkill, especially when there's plenty of exciting ways Namco could have designed another Japanese female, without pandering to a bizzarre need to Europeanize their native characters.

If my eyes are working correctly, Taki had pink tights in SoulCalibur and SCIV.

The Dreamcast handled color odly it would seem. Taki was clearly wearing red in the arcade version of SCone. Ive also seen many a bad TV interpret the Dreamcast version of Taki into red as well. As for SCIV, clearly her default color is red, but they spiced it up with their kick ass lighting & materials engine that just made it go from red to holy shit silky insanity red (which is flat out awesome and IMO the best look she has ever had peroid).

Secondly, everyone again keeps bringing up Taki's chest size. Officially she is a Japanese "E" which is more like an American "DD". Her in game look has never been over the top, her conceptual art has never been over the top. Just look at my avatar, her size is perfectly matched for her frame. It was when SCII hit they decided they could market the hell out of her chest and went berserk with the promotional art. I personally just wish they would stop making her bodysuit conform to each and every crack. It was perfect in SCone, it realistically hugged her curves, it didn't dig into them. SCone's more realistic conformity with SCIV style and materials = perfection in costume design.

Anyway, we can likely assume that this new Taklet will now hold the rank as the overall fastest character in the game (though Im sure if Taki is included she will still have some Mekkimaru 8 or 9 frame goodness), if done right Taki could be included with a style that is mix of speed and very flashy power moves fueled her ninjitsu arts. Consider that she destroyed a castle and the Egypt stage in SCII and we have yet to see some real destruction used in game. That presents truckloads of potentially new moves. Hell, they could have ran with new concepts so far that they felt her old move set was simply obsolete, but instead of throwing it away they offloaded it to her disciple.

Speaking of Mekkimaru, we can assume from the art that the disciple does not have it, and it's unlikely she has Rekkimaru either. So, taking this further, we can consider that Taki's style has indeed been split. The disciple will focus on more traditional ninja arts. Taki, now either in full control of, or fully possessed by Mekkimaru, could be focuing on ninjitsu arts mixed with parts of her old style. In gameplay terms, a Taki style that is all about possession, bombs, and big damage. Another that is about chip and poke or is perhaps more bulldog centric. We will certainly find out a lot this weekend...

Which blazblue you talking about. I think that series has some of the worst dubbing ever, right after VF.

Even Taki? Turn on your console right now and start playing her. lol
It drives me nuts.

Older people like JP voices partially because, once again, they're what's familiar and comfortable for the games. 10+ years of japanese voices in fighting games before they even started to think about language options, you get used to the babble.

I play against Tokyo all of the time.

I don't think that's what it is at all.

That's a very in-depth answer :p

But seriously; is it a reason for everybody? No. Do many people like what they're used to and comfortable with? Yes.

Of course with all the damn kids around these days, the reason is getting less true :p

Point to prove? Pocky Yoshi was a kid who grew up with Shoryuken. Not ShowUcan =/.......yeah he wanted to spam this vid for fun. So sue him. =p

What? I think you got a bootleg copy with fan dubbing because BB (all three have the same voices really) is so much better in english than japanese. I was forced to listen to japanese dub when I played BBCS2 for my psp before it came to america. I was flustered by the voice acting and couldn't wait for the English one to come out. I like english dubbing more than japanese (in most cases not all) because english voice acting sounds real to me. Japanese is waaaay exaggerated. watch an anime with japanese voice acting and then watch a japanese tv show with live actors. There's a big difference. Azumanga Daioh is at least 1000x better in english than in japanese as is High School Rumble and anyone who thinks other wise is in some serious denial. That's what I think.

personally, Like BlazBlue English voices better than any other fighting game. Its hard to explain why, but feel they are dramatic with everything they say. I jus wonder what it would take for people to say, "those english voice over were great."

Sometimes English voice actors are not great. Sometimes Japanese voice actors are not great. Sometimes both are true, or neither.

But personally, I think one of the real reasons many people like subs more than dubs is... lots of anime and games have fairly stupid writing. And nothing makes that clearer than actually speaking such lines out loud in a language you understand. Alternatively, voice acting in a language you do NOT know, accompanied by subs that you do understand, can simultaneously communicate both the emotions and concepts of a character without triggering the critical parts of your brain that notice bad writing.

In my opinion, the people best qualified to judge whether specific Japanese or English voiceovers are better are people who are actually fluent in both languages - currently a minority of the audience (and certainly a minority of the people who complain endlessly online about sub vs dub).

As long as any given media includes both options, people should just pick whichever language they like best and not bother everyone else about it.

P.S. – of course, sometimes the difference is so undeniably vast that the better option should be set by default. But these days localization is generally not that horrible for anything worth watching or playing.

P.P.S. - for what it’s worth, I play SCIV with English voices and enjoy them. I’ve tried Japanese voices, and my enjoyment was... lessened. But I see the SC series as being composed of equal parts awesome and hilarious; for me, a lot of what the characters say is supposed to sound silly and over the top. Your mileage may vary.

P.P.P.S - also fwiw, some things I prefer sub, some things dub. I’m not trying to make a case for either as a general rule.

It drives me nuts.

Key phrase here:

"It drives ME nuts."

Everyone is different. Everybody's got a special kind of story. Everybody's got a way to shine. It don't matter what you got, not a lot? So what? You'll have yours and they'll have theirs and I'll have mine. And together we'll be fine cause it takes different strokes to run the world, yes it does. It takes, different strokes to run the world, hyuuuummmmm.

I agree with you on some of the corny stuff they say (Talim comes to mind LOL).

To be fair Blazblue gave us a real royal treatment. They hired nothing but anime veterans and professionals who have experience at this sort of thing. From Tony Oliver who's career goes all the way back to Robotech to Christina Venezuela who while new has been crazy active they didn't slouch in the casting for any of the actors. The people chosen fit the anime style of the game well. I suppose that made a lot of sense with all the lines to be recorded in that game. For a fighter it was pretty verbose, a few drama cd's worth of dialogue easily. I commend them for the effort.

See the thing is I can't tell what your angle is as I don't believe you knew what mine was. This being the reason why I hate talking to randoms on fourms as you can always take it the wrong way. I meant no disrespect and I hope that you can see that.

Personal I'm slightly underwhelm by the new girls design. Neck up and knees down are alright, the rest is so-so. I know she suppose to be Taki's student but they could have did more with the design then cut and add to Taki's outfit. Otherwise I have to wait to the game is in my system to determine rather or not I like her.

She looks... like she's going to be a hoe. Kinda like Cassandra's personality.
The design is okay. I like how it's got a lot of Taki's influence in it, but still quite different. I wonder how much different she'll be.. I'm expecting her to be a lot different, ruining my interest in Taki. But, eh.
