Fav developer thread

Soulcalibur USED to be good... SC1 and SC2 were great... SC3 was absolutely terrible, and in comparison to SC3, SC4 is a good game. But its still a far cry from what SC1 and SC2 were.. Soulcalibur Legends is a joke too.

Tekken USED to be good (I never liked it)... but Tekken 4 was a total wash to the point that the entire T4 staff was sent off to make other games (namely SC3/SC4). And from what I am hearing, Tekken 6 is terrible... and Death by Degrees as atrocious.

Xenosaga sucked from what I have heard. Xenogears was good, as it was made when Square was still developing software (now they are a publisher, and only develop FF and KH); but Xenosaga was shit compared to that. You forget, it was planned for 5 games, and was cancelled after 3 because it was so bad...

Tales WAS a great series... my favorite RPG series of all time... Tales of Phantasia is my absolute favorite RPG of all time. Tales of Destiny, Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Eternia, Tales of Legendia... these are all great games. But Tales of Symphonia? Pure shit. Tales of the Abyss? Worst Tales game ever made. Tales of Vesperia looks like a carbon copy clone of Abyss; so I have no interest in that either.

I can understand your opinion on Soulcalibur and Tekken. Though I am freaking tired of people saying how great the old SC games were and how much the new ones suck, I can respect that opinion. And even though Xenosaga is personally one of my favorite game series of all time (Any part of Xenosaga 1, 2, or 3> Disc 2 of Xenogears), I recognize that it had its flaws. But Tales? I've played thousands of hours of RPGs, and I cannot even fathom how "Pure shit" is the best you can give ToS. You're entitled to your opinion, but I'm just curious why you thought this game was so bad.

Hehe, not to poke at Jaxel too much, I can't full heartedly agree on your SC3 opinion. It was a damn good game. One of the best in the entire series, dare I say. Why? Production quality was the best in the whole series. In other words, it was the prettiest in show, besides some iffy character models. It had decent CAC, several modes (including the now defunct Tournament and Chronicles), several awesome museum pieces, amazing music and levels, and a story mode that could be developed into something great if it were to make it back in the sequels. What made it bad? The terrible balancing, so unfortunately, it's the Soul Series black sheep. What I wouldn't do for an arcade addition with online enabled for PSN...

Honestly, I believe SC1 and 2 to be a bit lacking compared to Soul Blade. Yes, the fighting system in SC1 was such a huge leap in the right direction, which is what launched the series to where it is now. Presentation wise, it was very...blah. I give the museum credit it for the fan art and back story pics, but the intro movie and endings were just dull. SC2 was worse, as the Museum was just practically gone, the endings somehow got worse (ONE unique picture along with the stock character art? Come on...). The intro and Destined Battle scenes, however, were great. Plus, that Inferno battle is just epic.

On topic, I do suggest anyone who hasn't played Viewtiful Joe or Okami, go pick them up in your local game store's bargain bin. You'll be happy you did!

Diablo 2 was my main game for years and years (4~5) and what Blizzard did for that game was amazing (and sometimes terrible). However, the amount of patches it received (with .10 being a MAJOR makeover, basically remaking the entire game) was amazing.

In addition, the online service was great (ruined partially by bots at times) and the fanbase it required was great.

I cannot comment on WoW, WC or SC since I never played those games seriously. What they did for Diablo was pure gold, I'd say.

I used to have Nintendo on a pedestal, but ever since the Wii was released they have been so disappointing it makes me cry. Microsoft on the other hand has done great things, with XBL and the price cuts in the 360 being their prime selling points. You can't really give them credit for the "Age of ..." series, but those are fantastic as well.

Other than that, I rarely take a good look on developers. I hardly know which games are made by which people. Not until recently I discovered that SC and tekken were made by the same developers. Maybe 'cause I only played SC2 and T3.

You should have been disappointed with Nintendo since the N64 era... N64 was bad, the GameCube was bad, and now the Wii is bad. Nintendo was good during the SNES era, now they are a joke...

As for Microsoft... you do know they just announced that they are closing Ensemble Studios (the people who do the Age of Empires series) right? Which doesnt make sense to me. Normally, you close a studio, after they FAIL. Ensemble has been making nothing but good games, and they are soon going to release Halo Wars... Shouldn't Microsoft wait for Halo Wars to bomb, before they shut Ensemble down? They aren't just closing Ensemble down, they are laying everyone off.

I disagree on the N64 being bad. Maybe because I was still 10~11 when it came out and was amazed by Mario 64 and all the other goodies that came out on it. Not sure how I would look at it right now, but for me: those were awesome days.

The gamecube was not that special, I agree, but they still managed to get some decent games out of it, unlike the Wii. I never owned one; my budget only allowed one console, which was the Xbox.

Of course I know ES was shut down just recently. It hit the Age community in the face.. hard. They did say that they would continue the Age series though. An Age of Mythology 2 would be one of the announcements that would rock my gaming world. Like Diablo 3 a while back: that shit was wicked.

Yes, of course Microsoft would be continuing the Age series... because its a money maker. But its still an RTS made by different people from the original creators; made for the sole purpose of being able to continue cashing in on the name, with people who have no interest in holding up the integrity of the series. Tell me a single RTS where that has EVER worked. Just look at how C&C is after EA bought Westwood.

Presentation wise, there was nothing "blah" about SC1. That museum is probably the best art gallery I've seen in ANY game and the graphics still look decent even today (something definitely not true for Soul Blade). The only thing I'll agree with was that the opening was weak (although you can alter it however you wanted). As for the endings, I still hold SC1 on top in that department. The artwork for those endings were awesome (better than SC2 even) and the music played during those still images easily set the tone for the endings (I still get goosebumps watching Inferno's ending).

The only games worthwhile on N64 that I played were Mario 64, Golden Eye, and Perfect Dark. I suppose you can say Ocarina of Time if you're a Zelda fan (which I'm not so I never cared for the game).

Same applies to Capcom's Clover Studios. Viewtiful Joe and Okami were awesome and got great press while God Hand was extremely underrated. It's just that not a lot of people were buying their games, despite them being good. Might be the same case with Ensemble?

I'm a bit more optimistic on this one. The people who worked on AoE and AoM can still work on a new AoWhatever. I guess time will tell on how the possible new AoWhatever will develop, but writing it off already seems a bit too drastic.

The Mario Kart was great (and so was Diddy Kong racing!). The Banjo games were lots of fun as well.

Ocarina of Time is still one of the best games ever made, I would say. Majora's Mask wasn't bad either.

The Age series sold very well, from what I remember. That can hardly be the reason.

In my opinion the Age series went seriously downhill after AoE2.
AoM wasn't too bad, but 3 was just..................

Microsoft has already stated that almost everyone (except essential skeleton crew) has been LAID OFF (not moved to different studios, FIRED). When they finish working on Halo Wars, the remaining staff will also be laid off. So I dont see any original Ensemble devs working on the new Age of Empires games.

As for N64... 10 (and thats a stretch) good games in the entire lifespan of the console. Thats a bad console.

And Okami and God Hand sold shitty. Good games or not, Capcom lost a lot of money. Clover Studio games were way to eccentric, and in a business that demands profit, thats just not doable.

what about superman 64? and wargods?

lol. Epic win.

I can see an argument for the N64 being bad, but the Gamecube was completely underrated. I think most people just compare it to the PS2 (admittedly, a superior system) and write it off. I played the hell out of my Gamecube...until I got a PS2, of course.

Speaking of which, how does everyone feel about EA? To me, it seems like most of their games are extremely disappointing in at least one aspect. Maybe it would help if I liked sports games?

Konami-Castlevania being my all time favorite series (even if I think they started to slip a bit with Symphony), I love Konami, but also for Silent Hill, Contra, and MGS, which i don't really play but I can appreciate. They've done a lot of innovating and have put out so many high quality games, it's absurd.

Capcom-If the only games they ever put out were DMC3 and Street Fighter 2, Capcom would still be one of the best publishers in the game.

Blizzard-I suck balls at it, but I love Warcraft 3. The world that that game is and all the interesting easter eggs, references, etc. shows they put a lot of love into that game. I wish they'd done another expansion pack for it and given us another couple races to play as in multiplayer. They consistently turn out high quality stuff AND do beta testing unlike...

Namco-They make great games that just seem rushed out, especially lately. SC3 could have been the masterpiece of the SC series had they actually put some time into beta testing it. The more time I spend with SC2 the more I realize how broken SC3 is and it's truly unfortunate. SC4 is definitely on the right track, but there was too much missing from it IMO. TEkken is a great series too, a mainstay for serious fighting game fans. Oh yeah, and PACMAN!

Nintendo-I only like a handful of their games, but you can't say they don't put out a lot of high quality stuff, and can also be really innovative.

HAte:

Sega-Only because their douchebag shareholders put the kabosh on what was one of the most innovative companies ever. They were leading the way in the gaming world, and while some of their innovations were a bit poorly executed, some were excellent and could have made Sega a major player had the company stuck with the Dreamcast.

Developer that I like :

- SNK ( Metal Slug, KOF Series, and Garou)
- Capcom ( Megaman series is my favorite game from Capcom)
- Arc Work System ( Guilty Gear)
- Namco ( Tekken)
- Project Soul ( Soul Calibur)
- LSP ( CT special Force)
- DreamFactory ( Tobal 2)
- Konami ( Contra, Pro Evolution Soccer)
- Free Radical Design or known as Crytek UK ( Time Splitter series is my favorite FPS game, this game is so underrated)
- Naughty Dog ( Crash Bandicoot)

Developer that I don't like :

- Midway
- EA

Like:
Capcom(Bitch all I want, they gave me RE, SF, MvC, and LP2)
Namco(Galaga, Pac-Man, Tekken)
Konami(CASTLEVANIA. 2-D CASTLEVANIAS!)
Naughty Dog(Uncharted is too dope)
Epic Games(Yes. Complain all I want about Gears, I still buy the new ones. Bulletstorm was pretty fun too)
Visceral Games(Dead Space is a great series)
Valve(RELEASED WHEN ITS DONE, and not a second sooner. L4D series, Portal, and TF2 are among my favorite games)
Cave(Shooters as hardcore as they can get!)
Bungie(Gave me years worth of a over glorified console shooter, and by fucking god. I enjoyed every minute of it.)
Reverge Labs( Team behind Skullgirls)
Behemoth (CASTLE CRASHERS!!!!)
Team Meat (Super Meat Boy!!!!)
SNK Playmore(KoF, Metal Slug, SamSho.)
Nintendo(Still holding me by nostalgia alone, I still like the big N. I just wish they grew up with me.)
Hal Labs(Giving me Kirby, SSB, and SSBM. Is enough, that I can let Brawl slide.)

On the fence:
S.O.E (Im still waiting on "The Agency" from these chumps.)
Project Soul(Redemption with SC5 is their last shot)
Arc System Works(EDIT: Moved them here, because. As much as I love GG and got in an uproar about them not making a new one (AC on XBLA/PSN would make me just as happy honestly.) They are a good developer. So I don't hate them anymore, but I lost a lotta love for them from that one comment.)

Straight HATE!:
Square(Outside of Mario RPG, I do not think I've ever enjoyed anything else from them.)
Blizzard(I am not Korean, so I can't play SC. As for WoW? They can take WoW and go fuck themselves)
Sega(Fucked up Sonic over the years and keep leaving the rest of the world out of your VF loop, thanks.)

Midway(They are irrelevant now.)

Like:
Arc System Works - They might have fallen to the "used to like" list but Hard Corps Uprising saves them. Do not like Blazblue but love their older stuff like Guilty Gear, HnK, Battle Fantasia, etc.
Sting - They mostly make RPG games for portable systems. The Dept. Heaven series games are all very innovative and fun and some of their other stuff is good too.
Falcom - Ys Seven was very good, as are the rest of the Ys games I've played. Gurumin owns. Trails in the Sky comes out at the end of the month so hopefully that will be good too
Nippon Ichi - Saved from falling onto the "used to like" list by Z.H.P. Really like to see more good original titles from them like ZHP. They do too many remakes and ports. Lets hope Disgaea 4 is good.
From Software - Dark Souls should be pretty sweet. Games I like from them are Otogi, Armored Core, and Demon's Souls.
Capcom - Monster Hunter Tri last year was sweet. MvC3 is fun

Used to like but have fallen in recent (or not so recent) years:
Sega - Used to be a huge Sega fanboy. They were actually still good for a while after dreamcast, but after 2003 (when Smilebit and some other development groups got disbanded iirc) they really just started to suck. They still do publish some good games though.
Camelot - Their Shining games on the Saturn and Golden Sun GBA games were great. Then they do their mario tennis games or whatever and when they finally do an RPG again it sucks. I'm so disappointed in Golden Sun DD that I seriously doubt I'll be buying the next one.
Treasure - They've put out too many lackluster remakes on portables in recent years. Sin and Punishment 2 seems good but I didn't play it much (what is up with the character designs though? eurgh!). What happened to the good old days when they came out with lots of original titles? now they just do remakes and sequels like everyone else v_v Favorite Treasure game is Silhouette Mirage (Saturn, JP ver) followed by Radiant Silvergun

Dislike: lots. I'm a picky guy

Just because a company makes one or two games I like they wont make the list.

Atlus - I will buy anything they make/publish love Atlus.
Bioware
Bethesda
Namco-Bandai
Tri-Ace
Square-Enix
Visceral Games
Valve

There is only one company I can think of that is so bad that its capable of being one of my dislikes and that is

Southpeak Games - They actually publish but all they publish is crap games I dont even know why their still around.

Like:
Bioware -Western RPG's go.
Arc System Works- I seem to love everything they do.
Team Ninja- Should be used to like, but I liked everything they did in the itigaki era, yes even the swimsuit games. I spent so much time chilling out with those games and swearing when my presents were refused or the computer would kick my ass in the casino.
Capcom- Looking through my achievements here, devil may cry, marvel vs, dead rising. All good times.
Namco- I liked Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur IV, so sue me.
Bethesda- Thanks for bringing back fallout. Even if fallout 3 was a mess, New Vegas made up for it. In addition to the elderscrolls and oh God yes, Sea Dogs. Possibly rage as well.
Firaxis- Let's see civilization 2, 3, 4, 5. Alpha Centari? Nice work boys. I still remember Nabutikai Morgan's Television propaganda fondly.
Nexon- For free they do nice work.

On the fence:
SNK- I love me some KOF and the occasional metal slug but KOF XII burned me hard and shot their chances to become one of the US big-dogs in the fighter genre.
Lionhead- I like their sense of humor. It's nice to see an RPG series that isn't trying to be gritty or dark these days but the last fable was a mixed bag. From the simplified melee combat to the inability to aim my gun until the end of the game to the fact my white wife and my white character could have a black kid. How I wish they'd let me chime in on the design of the next one.
Ubisoft- I like Splinter Cell but it's just about the only thing I like from them. Even then I wasn't nuts about double agent or conviction's salughter-centric mentality. The plot line in Conviction was strong though, felt like old times. Also, Kane and Lynch. I kind of like those games for how terrible they are, the ridiculous amount of swearing and the fact they occasionally show a glimmer of genius that makes you feel kind of sorry for them. That said I have never been angrier playing a game than I have been with that series. Either because stealth just didn't work in a south american jungle or because I'd been shooting chinese guys for 40 minutes and MORE just came out.
Square- you canceled the highlander game written by the series head writer and yet you're making a new deus ex. I don't know if I want to punch you or hug you.
Bungie- I liked Halo. What's next?

Dislike
Blizzard- You have become such whores now. And playing favorites when it comes to faction and character balance is just the mark of a shitty developer. Your writing is the melodramatic work of a bad cartoon writer.
Valve- Hey I like left 4 dead and portal as much as the next guy, but how about we stop adding new hats to TFC2 and just get HL episode 3 out the door?

Chet: ....When it's done, Gabe.
Gabe: Oh yeah. (looks back to insert interviewer here) When it's done.

lol, Valve. Love em.
