Soulcalibur: Balanced or Not?

Balance is a Theoretical Concept, along with Tiers. It only exists under Ideal conditions, which don't exist.

With that said, Soul Calibur is the most fun and viable FG out there.

D.I.N.O, you rule man. Flat up. That is exactly what I've been trying to say. Thanks. Internet knuckle touch :D

This game is not balanced and that's just how it is. If you knowingly choose to play a shitty character and lose, you have no valid excuse except that you're stubborn and/or stupid.

And if I win? Does it make you look all the more worse for losing to a bottom tier with a mid/high tier?

Here's an interesting article on this subject.

While it was written primarily for SF, I believe it can apply to just about any fighting game out there.

At the end of the day, the number of viable characters doesn't matter as much as whether or not the match-ups between them are interesting. What people should discuss is less about whether or not Soul Cal is balanced, but more on whether the match-ups are interesting and deep enough to sustain the game for years to come.

This is an attitude that I absolutely despise. Nothing more than another way of trying validate oneself over a silly fucking game.

Low tiers win on ignorance or due to a gap in skill between opponents.

It's irrevelant. I already know if I lose with a Low tier I won't go making excuses how bad my character is. Then again if I do win I won't go shoving it in your face.

If you lose, you lose. It doesn't matter if it's character ignorance, Skill gap, lag tacts, whatever. You lost. Simple matter of the fact.

It's the players fault for not studying every character's moveset. So character ignorance is really more or less Human error. Same with skill gap.

Shadow, it does matter. I wish I could say this game were balanced proudly, but I would be an ignorant fool to think such. As a result, many of us have to tell a sweet candy coated lie(which I hate doing) to certain people who are still new at the game. This does not mean we're being condescending or spiteful with any intent to harm. But we can only leave it at "it's balanced with it's low tiers and high tiers" since some people are still dreaming that someone like Yoda can win a tourney for instance. It's when they lose valiantly when they realize "I was a fool for trying to be a low tiered hero". Hence in a tournament, the goal is win with the best tools suited for you. Bringing a Rock to a tourney fight is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. That's not to say you shouldn't rep Rock at a tourney, but you are warned that people really want to win. And they will use all their best tools to outshine yours knowing the ins and out of whatever opponent since they pride on "making it to the top" simply.

Well I already know winning a tournament with Rock/Seong/Yoda is incredibly challenging. But for regular casual play tiers don't matter. Thus at mid-low level play I honestly believe that "Balance" is such a subjective word. It won't matter unless you're playing the big leagues. In that case it is disappointing to see Ivy and Amy outshine most characters in nearly every tournament video I've watched.

I truly wish SCIV had more character variety in tournaments instead of seeing 2-4 characters used constantly. But then that goes to a question I've been wondering.

Does it take more "Skill" to use a low tier over a high tier? I'm starting to wonder what's the point of Maining and mastering Amy if she's so good and easy to use. Maybe it comes down to the person but I like using characters who have bad-matchups in general.

That is to say not anyone who picks up Amy/Ivy/Kilik can automatically win since it comes down to the player still. But It makes me question why people brag with their mains knowing they are at the top of the list? It's almost like HRD's bio on Xbox live.

Being the best Amy player is like being the Smartest Retard.

Hopefully SCV will address this balance issue and I would love to see Raphael being taken seriously in a tournament along with Maxi.

Shadow Collector:

I really think you should listen to what Khent says on this one. I don't know anyone else who can make Seong Mi-na look like a powerful character when she is, in all respects, flaming hot garbage. I've seen this guy want to tear his hair out with frustration trying to pull out wins against better characters. I know for a FACT that he has put over 30 times as much work into this game than I have, but when I fight him I still know that I just have to deal with Mi-na.

Granted, Khent is a scary player, but Mi-na is not a scary character, and that makes ALL the difference in a match. If you want to take human error out of it, all you have left is the character, and it's Mi-na vs. Voldo. There isn't a lot to be happy about for Mi-na there.

Well hopefully SCV Will address the balance issues.

The main question I want to ask is why Project Soul refused to re-balance the characters out? Why didn't they notice that Amy was so Superior to Seong-mi-na and Talim? How can they just ignore these outlandish game factors. And I'm not talking about Hilde's doom combo or Algol's bubble shield.

Those I would say are exploited "Glitches". What I'm talking about is Pure raw balance. Don't they have a team of competent staff that played with the characters before releasing the game? How could they not buff Maxi or Raphael and say they are fine and Buff Ivy/Kilik.

Maybe you can't answer this question. But I would at least like a theory as to why they neglected so many characters for 2-5 characters in the game. We understand Amy is one of the developers favorite characters, that doesn't justify her insane high tierness. Now I'm ranting. But yeah you're right. At the end of they day it is Voldo vs Seong and I just shake my head at how Unfair it really is.

Hey, forget about it man - SCV is what SCIV should have been - lets just look ahead with optimism! =)

I try man. Hopefully SCV will be more forgiving to the bottom and mid tiers this time around. Otherwise I might be like how Jaxel loved SCII and ended up nearly hating SC all because of SC3.

I feel so similar right now with SCIV XP. Although I will admit the new features their adding looks sexy. I wonder if Yoshimitsu and Yun-Seong will make a return. I honestly hope so >_<
