SCV- New CHARACTER ideas

But it does have most melee weapons covered. If you wanna talk long range Cervantes has a gun and Link had a boomerang and a bow. The only thing I saw above was a morning star that is not represented in the game as far as I know.

you kidding? there have been plenty of weapons suggested in this thread not revolving around swords:

Like the Iron fans, Chakram, Wind and fire wheels, Bladed bows, the Oar esque weapon, clubs, and flails. And thats just off of the top of my head.

Well all I can remember was Zulu warrior and Persian warrior so on and so on. This game already has a solid following so I feel the characters should be built around the weapon first, not where they are from. If that weapon can fit into a Native American tribal setting then cool but that is not where they should start from IMO.

You know what kind of character I would like?

A male warrior using a weapon that exists in the real world from a culture that espouses martial prowess, without any gimmicks, magic, or goofy personality traits. That would probably stand out in a roster full of monsters, magical children and emo swordsmen. They would preferably have a motivation that falls in line with something real and attainable rather than something crazy; and would have a nice down to earth kind of personality devoid of extreme emotional outbursts and megalomania.

If Soul Calibur was made by a western developer, we might be able to see that. But since its Japanese, I'd expect to see some form of melodrama, shouting, borderline nonhuman characters, etc. I think thats something most people on this thread lost track of: the series came from Japan. That right there should suggest that the developers are more likely to add characters from western and east asian cultures more than anything else. They'll behave more like characters in the developers culture rather then what you'd see in the west.

Trust me, I didn't lose track of that. To heap excessive excuses for poor character design seems sort of baffling considering being a character developer in a game like this requires research of all kinds into history and cultures.

What I was mostly parodying, however, with this sentiment was the fact that the supernatural and strange becomes less interesting the less normality there is to juxtapose it against. To use some colorful metaphors:

It's jumped the shark.
It's all Saiyans now.
Steve Urkel took over the show.

It's not really an excuse; there arent a lot of series from japan without those qualities. It shouldn't be that way, but there is some kind of cultural correlation that goes with how some characters are designed. They're not completely blind with character designs though. We wouldn't see more than half SC characters without some form of research. I do admit they could be doing a better job, but the effort was certainly there if they were willing to do any non Japanese characters (let alone make them the protagonists).

As far as the supernatural thing goes, it really depends on how its used rather than it just being there. I'd rather see something unrealistic and less interesting than something very realistic and straight up boring

This misses the point of my criticism entirely and you chose to substitute qualities not in evidence as well.
Something cannot be "wierd" or "out of the ordinary" without ordinary to juxtapose it against. We have too much "wierd" and now it's become normal. A normal character in SC would certainly be out of place, which is what is backwards about this whole scenario.

I would consider hilde to be normal in comparison to most of the cast, along with mits rock and yun.

A flail could be cool, but to design correctly it would take the character a bit of time (not much, but enough to notice) to get the flail up to speed. They would have to be a slow, but heavy damage character. They would be GI fodder. A straight up one-handed mace wielder would be cooler. in my opinion.

Something I want to see is a European (we don't have a Spaniard yet, do we?) who wields a basic longsword. Not a short sword like the Alexandras and not a freakishly oversized sword like Sieg and Nightmare. Just a normal hand-and-a-half. I could see silver armor, yellow cloth, and dark hair and eyes.

Or a British knight with the longsword and the Spaniard could be a conquistador! That'd be epic.

The Arabian with a scimitar would be good, and the Zulu as well. Lady Zulu, perhaps? Also, I'd like to see an Egyptian. And an Aztec.

Lol, I know, I'm too demanding.

Cervantes is Spaniard, but it wouldn't hurt to have another (we have two Brits). I do agree that it's odd to have heavy sword wielders, but no longsword wielders. Its a bit ironic in a way... If Salia were to be a playable character in SCV, I'd like to see her using a longsword. She'd also furfill players requests as a new female character. I just hope they don't give her blonde hair if they make that decision. Everyone complained about there being too many white people, but there's almost no brunettes in the series. wtf??

Since there were stages set in Egypt, I wouldn't mind seeing an Egyptian or Arabian character. Aztec and Zulu, however...I don't think so and they don't really fit with what was already given. The Zulu kingdom didn't even exist until 1816 (ended 1897) and SCV is set in 1607.

Again, focus isn't nations. It's the weapons

*checks characters*

Huh, only Rock and Mi-na (plus her dad) have had brown hair. Even unnaturally young white outnumbers them.

If nothing else, giving Salia brown (or black I guess) hair avoid repeating a hair color in the Black Wind playable.

Mitsurugi?

Mitsurugi?

So... 1 guy out of 30 is somewhat close to a real world analogue that people could possibly identify with?
Wait, fuck that! Mitsurugi can parry fucking bullets; That's closer to normal than the following though:

Amy: A little girl fencer who can us taken care of by a Vampire who is, for some reason, obsessed with her. Gross.
Astaroth: A 3 year old golem who's heart literally is outside his body.
Seigfried: The sword is bigger than he is; and he has an emo complex. Also, he can dropkick in platemail.
Nightmare: LOOK AT ME IM A DEMON.
Tira: A psychotic young girl with a bladed hula hoop who has a pet raven. Goth chicks eat your heart out. Tim Burton should be suing over more or less stealing every female character he's ever made.
Talim: An innocent young girl who calls on the power of the wind to fight to overcome people with... training, strength and skill... WITH THE POWER OF THE WIND (despite having no wind related powers besides jumping alot).
Cervantes: A dead pirate who can defy gravity and teleport. Who knew pirates were that magical. Or zombies. Oh and also, he has a fucking gunsword.
Ivy: An english dominatrix who is the daughter of a dead pirate, and she has no soul and a magical alchemical whip sword.
Sophitia/Cassandra: BLONDE Greek sisters who somehow worship ancient greek gods in the 17th century, commune directly with them, and have no actual fighting training.
Taki: The worlds loudest ninja; and she uses BOMBS (very ninja like). Oh and she also hunts demons. Is not stealthy at all. Unfortunately proportioned.
Yun: Hi, I'm Yun. I just goof around and have no real training; and somehow I'm not a dead man. MAN I'M COOL. IF ONLY I COULD EXPRESS HOW COOL I WAS THROUGH SENSELESS TEENAGE TOMFOOLERY.
Lizard Man. Lizard. Man.
Raphael: A Vampire Fencer with a loli fetish, and no real actual COOL vampire traits (A useless teleport and one throw). It wasn't so bad in SC2 when he was just a cocky fencer and Amy wasn't in the game.
Maxi: A Japanese Elvis impersonator who constantly loses his memory. Yes folks, they got rid of a two-nunchuck wielding badass for an amnesia trope.

snip[/spoiler]

I still stand by the others I said, Hilde, Rock, and Yun

not to say picking up a sword and competing is viable, but fighting styles are completely made up by random individuals, so him having no training isn't really a big no no, but I don't really know anything about yun, but personality and looks wise I find him completely realistic.

Also I would say Mina is farely realistic, however I think she should have a bit more muscle in her appearance, as I hear those naginata weapons are really heavy. But other than that...

for me the most ridiculous characters for me are;

Talim, no teenage girl is that perfect, and her wind calling and shamanistic magic also come into play.

Nightmare, Obvious reasons.

Raph, Cervy, Tira, Amy, Ivy, pretty much everyone ageless and vampire esque due to soul edge.

not to mention Tira, and Ivy's weapons.

and Lizardman, see nightmare.

Looks like you might want to whip out BlazBlue Reave :)
Well I guess our definitions of normal are different.

Normal=Regular humans
Siegfried,Patroklos,Leixia

Abnormal=Monsters or other weird shit
Aeon,Yoshi,Asteroth

Not what their personalities make them do or say. Bushido Blade has everything you wish for. Blaz Blu is 2D there for its weak to me.

I'd welcome a woman of color, they are so rare, even more so than men! It would be a more than welcome addition in my opinion, if not just for breaking the mold.
