Basic Q&A Thread

Does anyone know the exact amount of health characters have? Not counting CaS just standard 100% HP points. Seems to be around 250 but I'm not sure.

Awesome, I love how you all can efficiently answer questions. Two great answers XD

You should see some of the shit the SF people can talk about, lol.
Honestly, you get exact diagrams of hitbox size for attacks there XD

As a tekken player, the soul calibur's wakeup system is beyond weird.

How does the knockdown / oki work in this game?

After I get knocked down, what are my options?
After I knock someone down, what am I able to punish? Either with yomi or reactions.

I keep getting launched from what looks like a knocked down position and I have to get educated.

edit: If there's a page that goes super in depth with all system mechanics, pointing me in that direction would also be extremely helpful.

Those are probably Tech Traps.

When you are knocked down you are able to Tech Roll(Ukemi), by pressing G and an optional direction.
This allows you to get up faster and with a roll in the direction you pressed.
If you don't press a direction you Tech Roll backwards.
With a Tech Roll in the correct direction you can avoid some ground hitting attacks completely. And sometimes i think Front Tech also allows you to block stuff that would hit you otherwise.

BUT during this Tech Roll you are in a crouched state and you can't guard.
Because of that, after certain knockdowns you can get hit and knocked down again, even though you press G all the time.
Example:
When you're lying on the ground and get hit by Taki's Shurikens, you get ground stunned, if you Tech now, depending on the situation you are open to her prime mid launcher 22B.

To avoid Tech Traps the easiest way is to just lie or roll on the ground without pressing G and look for a moment to get up safely without Teching.
Exceptions: There are attacks that are designed especially for lying opponents like Rock's ground throws or Nightmares Grim Stride KK which can pick you up and even ring you out.

If you know a Tech Trap you can also Tech in the right direction but if you don't a wrong Tech can hurt a lot.
It's also very situational.

For example if Taki hits you from behind with A6, you better stay down.
Because if you stay down you eat Wind Roll B, but damage is scaled down if you don't move because you're grounded.
But if you Tech Roll you eat full Wind Roll BKB, unscaled. Only after A6 from behind WR B catches all Tech directions.
After frontal A6, WR B can be teched by Ivy in both left and right direction others only in one direction so characters come into play also.

You can program the Training dummy to Tech(Ukemi) too, also in different directions so you can see what happens and test your own tech traps.

It mostly depends on which move knocked you down.

can you set the computer to shake out of stun? because I know you can do shakeable combos in training mode and it counts as a true combo.

I believe if you set the second action to "G" then it should shake it.

In soul calibur 3 I remember Ivy had 2 stances where she swung the sword whip horizontally and then another where she swung it vertically. I was disappointed to find out when they removed them in soul calibur 4, and from the looks of the videos I've been watching I can't see her using them in soul calibur 5 either.

Those stances were apart of her style and why I liked playing as her. Removing them would be like taking away the stances of Siegfried or Lei Wulong in tekken. It's part of their identity and without them they are no longer the same character.

I've always wondered why they changed Ivy like that and thought I'd ask if anybody knew here :)

Thanks!

While this is true since SCIII, some people really didn't like those stances because they broke up her flow. And because Ivy didn't originally have the stances in her style, then it is not quite like taking Lei's or Sieg's as they began life with their stances.

I myself thought that Ivy's stances looked cool but they were broken. I think if Ivy got a boob reduction , wore pants, dyed her hair, and started using a feather duster instead of her chain sword , you'd have an argument about identity change.

Oh , on another note, If you like Ivy and have only played her since SCIII then you should be in for a treat. That is to say if she is anywhere close to how she used to be.

Thanks for the reply.
I understand what you're saying. Even though I found Ivy without those stances didn't have the same flow. But I didn't play her before SC3 so I wouldn't know.

How come you say I'm in for a treat though? Is Ivy's moveset more like in SC3 then her moveset in SC4? I'm not sure if it was just the stances they changed in SC4 but she felt very different

She has little in common with SC4 Ivy.

In SC5, she's a mix of SC1 and SC3 Ivys. She has only once stance this time, but most of her moves have two versions (short and long range). You do the long range move by holding down the button, eg 6B and 6(B).

I thought they said they gave her two stances in SCV. It seems like she'll turn out to be one of the most severely nerfed veterans in SCV along with Mitsu.
