EVO Update: Top 8

With the rest of the mods enjoying the nice, cool Vegas casino weather, I felt it was appropriate to update everyone with how yesterday's matches went if for whatever reason you're having trouble (like I initially was) finding the results/brackets, or maybe you're just new to the scene and not quite sure where to go for information.

With a full day off today (Saturday) before they finish out top 8 (Sunday), you gotta keep yourself occupied somehow, right? If you haven't been paying attention to the biggest and hypest tournament in the world, you'll be in for some surprises

Top 8

Winners:
Xephukai (USA) - Asta (also, Patroklos)
Something-Unique (USA) - Pyrrha
Shen Chan (SG) - Cervantes
CRNA|Ruka (JAP) - Patroklos

Losers:
Kura (KOR) - Patroklos
Woahhzz (USA) - Alpha Patroklos
Shining Decapon (JAP) - Tira
Kamaage (JAP) - Mitsurugi

TOP 8 STARTS AT 10 AM PST. DON'T MISS IT!!!!!

HEADLINES:
-France out!
In a surprising turn of events, both Keev and Kayane lost some tough (extremely hype) matches. Keev now has himself an official EVO nemesis having both losses come from the same player. [NOTE: The EVO bracket is incorrect for the Keev/Kura match; Keev did NOT win that match.]

-International players sans France having a strong performance!
If you were watching the stream and listening to the commentary, you probably noticed that even players like Bibulus were taken aback by the performance of foreign players not normally known for their SC dominance, such as the Singaporeans.

-MAJOR comebacks!
Although this is certainly true for many specific matches (there were SO many close matches to even begin to list), there were some players that have straight-up faced the gauntlet in terms of their bracket. Kamaage (who you'll notice is in the loser's side of top 8) was knocked into the loser's side second round... and hasn't looked back since, stringing along an impressive number of wins to get in to the final 8.

-Some interesting character selections...
We knew we were going to see a lot of Nightmare, Natsu, Mitsu and Violas (to name a few), but... regular Patroklos? Three of the top 8 are regular P players, and Xeph used him in certain match-ups. Looks like that shin kick is making waves. Not to mention, there's even a Japanese Tira that sneaked in there... although his dominance in some matches would certainly mock my use of the word "sneaked."

-Word of the day: Execution
Not just in the sense of killing someone (metaphorically speaking, of course), but also technical execution. So many rounds and matches were won because of clutch, high-difficulty moments... and some were lost because of wasted opportunities. A lesson to newer players: Your ability to execute when needed is crucial on a stage like this.

-Asia VS the US of A!
Of the final 8 spots, the US holds 3 (2 in winner's) while Asian players hold the other 5 (Japan with 3, Korea with 1, and Singapore with 1). With Europe being such an SC hotspot, how surprised is everyone that this game seems to have quite a following in Asia?!?!

-So many killers...
If EVO has taught us anything so far, it's that there are a lot of skilled players in Calibur V, and any one of them can take any given event on any given day. For instance, despite France not making top 8, that doesn't mean that they weren't prepared or didn't play strongly: Keev and Kayane's matches were some of the hypest of the day. Expect more players to surface and this game to have a long shelf-life.

========================

That's all I have for right now. I was not able to catch every match, so if there's something you feel is worth noting as a headline, feel free to comment and I'll add it to the main post. Otherwise, fire away with any of your comments/opinions on how the hypest event of the year has turned out thus far! Oh, and don't forget to throw out some predictions!

I will give Decopon credit. But I know the guys who played against him- I think Best of 3 instead of Best of 5 really screwed everything over. But, what's done is done, no excuses, labwork is in everyone's future.
also, you were not at EVO and as such I did not get to play you, that is a crime :[

We have this saying in Germany that a horse never jumps higher than it has too, if you know what i mean :P Decopon won because he had some big balls in some situations, he deserved every win. There shouldnt be "but" or "if", he won everything so he is the man to beat in the future.

I really wanted to come, but just started a new job this week. Couldnt tell my boss im flying around the world to play nerdy video games. He thinks i'm a serious grown up person and shit. Could not ruin this impression so early :)

The best of three is one of the best things to happen t this game for tournaments! Seriously, most of my matches were over before a single song finished on my iPod

dont tell me you're ashamed of your hobbies. Even worse your boss will think low of you b/c of this? This is just lame, seriously, its him who need to grow up, not you.

Lol Belial it was a joke. I just started this week. Cant take holidays in my first week :) Everyone knows im a nerd.

I'd like to chime in here. Doc, I understand the sentiment and know how these guys may sound. But I can tell you that everyone of these guys said the same thing, "Decopon went out and took those matches. He deserved the win" but also as competitors and who amongst us isn't, they were all saying how they felt if they had done something differently or played better at the right time they could have gotten the win. It's the ultimate test to play the person who you lost to and come back and win. Everyone would like that chance again. But yeah, before anything gets out of hand, I know for a fact that everyone who lost to him had nothing but respectful things to say about him and his big win.

agreed, be proud of who you are, for years I ran away from my "guilty pleasure" but no longer this is who I am, and if u don't like it, FUCK YOU!

Since you're bringing your emotions into the matter about balance, I'll consider your opinion void.

I know this it's late, but the reason why I was on the Hilde hate bandwagon after Tira won EVO was I couldn't accept Hilde. While everyone has moved on from SCIV Hilde. I could not and I'll be happier with Patch 1.04 when Project Soul achieves their goal in re-balancing Hilde. Again, I'm sorry for saying the horrible things about SCV Hilde.

HEY LOOK AT ME I COULD HAVE BEATEN THE EVO CHAMP DECOPON IF I JUST PLAYED WAY BETTER THAN I ACTUALLY DID. BUT I ALMOST BEAT HIM.

Just fucking stop it. You all lost to him in the end, so stop running around and telling how actually you should have beaten him. What the fuck is this. -

Give some credits to this dude for winning every tense situation.

its what i believe. i ran out of time going over other matchups, tira was one of the characters that slipped through the cracks and i left alot of free damage from block punishment on the table.

i wouldnt have had to play WAYYYY BETTER it went down to the last hit of the last round. its not like i lost to him 0-2 and am saying he's trash.

fuck you for getting all uppity about it

Haha so this is what the SCV community has come to. USA easily outperforms Europe and momentarily our respect for their scene goes through the roof. And then we see this...

The man is very beatable... Dude loves to hit buttons. I need a salty run back.
i'm gonna chime in and say i blew it against decopon as well... i feel like if i had went over tira block punishment aside from obvious things like GS 3B, 66AA, 3A i would have won.
Maybe Belial is thinking "man if i coulda drunk a Powerade I woulda killed Whoahhzz". Maybe Keev is thinking "man if I didn't have to play Patroklos I woulda had this shit". Maybe Decopon is thinking "omfg I can't believe I nearly lost to those noobs Galvan and kAb". What the fuck does it matter?

He won, you didn't, that's how tournaments work. Make excuses somewhere else, preferably drunk in a bar, don't broadcast them to the entire world community.

Pretty much. I thought these topics were to talk about stuff like that. Seriously notice it's always a bunch of angry Europeans raining on the parade though (won't go over how much Doc talked about his controller issue the time he came over and how what he's saying is ironic).

I like hearing people's true feelings about the competition; I'm tired of all this gg and pat on the butt bullshit that you all have going on here (when you're secretly thinking it was anything but a good game unless you win). Niggaz is mad! If you've got hate in your heart...let it out. =)

And, yeah, this is coming from probably the least salty sc tournament player around. I mean, I was salty about losing to Belial but it's cool...I'll just pick Pyrrha on that ass next time.

^--- this man speaks truth. Let's see some runbacks in the very near future. I know I am running it back against Dreamkiller.

So make a salty "EVO: Excuses and Whining" thread, and you can all sing BGs together forever

I just wish my excuse could be that I didn't go like some others so I could sit back and talk about things I don't understand with an o so graceful air of superiority. O, how I wish.

.

Just just shut up already, your making up stuff. After my controller issue this were my words QUOTE: " Im sorry for this pathetic performance."

I didnt run around telling how i would have owned everybody otherwise.
