More Changes to the Ranking Ladder...

  • Admin
So some of you know, I've been updating the ranking ladder a lot during the past few weeks adding a multitude of new features. The majority of these new features will be pointless in regards to SOULCALIBUR V, as they haven't been around since release date; they have been put in for preparation of the inevitable release of SOULCALIBUR VI.

NOTE: This is not an official announcement for SOULCALIBUR VI; nor would I claim to have any such advanced knowledge of such a release for said game.

The most important additional feature is actually one that I added over a year ago, we just haven't been using yet: local sub-leagues. I think everyone will agree that when it comes down to it, a "global" ranking system isn't that accurate. Putting all regional players in the same league, where they don't actually have the opportunity to play each other on a regular basis leads to some very disputed results.

Because of this, I have created a "sub-league" system. For SC6, local leagues will be given the opportunity to create their own local power rankings which they can use to accurately judge the local players against each other in a more confined setting. As a test for this, I have created an SC5 local league for past results of our former Break Weekly tournaments in NJ.

As you can see, a local league is significantly more relevant than a global league.

If you look closely at the local league I linked, you will notice a new column and sorting option for "Earnings". This new system will return estimated earnings about players during the lifetime of their rankings. Unfortunately, because this system was not around for the past 4 years, for our SC5 rankings the numbers will appear to be extremely inaccurate and low.

Estimated earnings are based on several factors: the category a specific event belongs to (majors pay out top 7, monthlies pay out top 5, locals pay out top 3), the entry fee of the tournament multiplied by the number of player, and a new event data field for "payout bonus". Because of the way tournament structure is handled, this estimate system has a few quirks... which the "payout bonus" field will help alleviate.

The biggest quirk is related to majors which have separated pools and finals brackets. Since finals will only feature 8 players, the finals pot will appear to only be $80 (assuming $10 entry fee), even if 128 people entered the tournament. The new "payout bonus" field will allow the tournament submitter to define an extra $1200 to add to the pot of the finals, to more accurately represent the payout.

Naturally, since this field is brand new, tournaments submitted during the past 4 years do not have payout bonuses setup to counteract these inaccuracies. If any moderators will look to go through the past lists of hundreds of tournaments to fix these issues, they are free to do so.

Another small feature I've added relates to character usage statistics. As most of you know, players and organizers can submit character usage statistics for their tournament results. This information is then compiled into a rolling database that can be viewed and customized.

On that page, you can see character usage during the current lifetime of SC5's release. In addition, you can further drill down the statistics to only show specific usage: minimum rank (for instance, if you only wanted to see character usage for top 3 results) and minimum value (for instance, if you only wanted to see tournaments worth at least 3000 points). New in this update, you can now define a specific date range for statistics.

Well thats it. As usual, if you have any comments or requests, let me know.

Would there be a way to make Player rankings have the features that character statistics has? For example, if I only cared about SCV placings in 2015, would there be a way to exclude the tournaments before this year and show who is the best of 2015 thus far? Or show the player with the most top 8 appearances in SCV? Could I set it to display the ENTIRETY of post-patch tournaments results and exclude pre-patch placings?

I think seeing all of those would be cool and would allow people to view the rankings from more perspectives.

Isn't that exactly how the system already works? Rankings are determined by best 3 performances in the last 12 month period.

I am asking if it is possible to make the time intervals and the top performances cap customizable. I can ONLY look at who is the best from the last 12 months instead of setting it to where I can find out who is the best of 2014 (01/01/14 to 12/31/14). However, I can do that exact thing in the character statistics to find out which character has the most top 1s 3s and 8s of 2014. Having a feature similar to that was what I was trying to suggest.

Not really possible... the math calculations are resource intensive and thus have to be processed and built manually.

Just added several more new features!

  • You can now add more than one piece of media to each event! In addition to youtube playlists (previously supported), you can now link individual youtube videos. Videos will be placed into a slider.
You can see an example of this here:

  • You can now search for unclaimed results on bracket pages! New members to the forum, who have attended events in the past can use this new feature to help them claim their past results.
