Soul Calibur 6 Discussion

I wish they did that with the Soul Calibur cast, having them speak their native languages or the modern equivalent if things have changed since that period of time.

I suspend my disbelief for this in Tekken thinking maybe they have technology that allows them to understand eachother no matter the language because 'derr it's in the future' but with Soulcalibur, ehh. Accents would be cool though, I'd be okay with each character having an accent of where they come from.

I hope Kilik will have this design.

They nailed it in Soul Calibur II. At least in the concept art. In-game it didn't look so well.

Yeah... No.

It's really stupid. How many people actually talk to each other using their own different mothertongue? Also, people in Tekken speak like every language in the world... seriously, you're THAT talented and all you do is slap people? C'mon...

Isn't there like 5 different Yoshis across the span of all the SC games tho? Wrong pronouns honey xx
No. We had two, the first one being in games before SC5 and the second from SC5. The thing is that Yoshimitsu's SC5 profile was replaced with his SC4 one, deleting the second from existance.

I think the most fleshed out characters in SC are probably Sieg, Tira, Sophita, Maxi, Kilik, Xianghua, Nightmare, Pyrrha, Voldo and Ivy.

Maybe it's because i read into their stories but I think we get a sense of who they are.
Stories tend to be great even for the hated characters (save for exceptions, like Rock). Pyrrha's story is one of the two things that explains her constant crying (it doesn't make me stop hating her, but I hate her less). An orphan whose only friend is Tira, sold as a slave and had her fiance murdered and got blamed for it. She is incredibly miserable.

The other reason being that she was originally advertised with a fighting style called "Protected by her sword and shield", implying her sword was alive and fighting on its own, which would make a lot of sense with her whining mid-battle.

Speaking of characters and costumes I have to say my personal Ivy 1p costumes are from the original SC and from SC5 so I hope they'll take inspiration from one of them!
Speaking about Raphael... if he'll come back (and I hope so) will he appear as a vampire or not?

If the game follows SC2 and SC3, like I think it will, Raphael will become a vampire in the middle of the story, appearing as a human first.

Speaking of language, the very first thing I do in every new Soul Calibur and Street Fighter game is changing character voices to Japanese. I couldn't imagine playing it in English.
Meh, I like to understand what the hell they're talking.

Made these collages as a way to compare the character designs and how they're rendered in each game.

Mitsurugi's design is pretty much SC1 with his pants from SC4. Even his face has the exact same expression as his SC1 artwork.

If you compare Mitsurugi's ingame look in SC5 and SC6 you can tell they're using an extremely similar body mesh and textures. If you compare his right arm you can see it looks the same down to specific details like the blood veins.

Sophitia's design is pretty much SC1 with the top being a merge of the tops from SC1 and SC4. In her ingame screenshots, you can tell her face is almost identical to the one from SC4 with one notable change: she's happy now!

Sad to see how workmanlike these new installment have become in terms of graphics. We've got what should be a generational leap in power from PS3 to PS4, and they're reusing so many of the same assets, just ported into a new engine. Some of it doesn't even look as good, like the hair, which lacks any translucency in Unreal Engine 4.

I wonder what it comes down to. Budget? Talent? Time? Has the series really sold so poorly that it cannot be afforded these things? Or is it Bamco trying to get more bang for less buck?

Edit: Dammit, last post of the page.

I'd like to see some of the unused SCV costumes concept arts:
Especially belly dancer Viola & Octo-Voldo.
I actually saw someone done that Viola on DA:

Plus, they aren't just serious, anyway. Taki is sassy as fuck, she doesn't give a damn about anyone she comes across on her journey except maybe Sophitia, she's rebellious, caring and a non conformist, shown by how she basically turns herself into a shinobi to figure out what was going wrong with Toki. She's wise too, literally a philosopher as shown by her speech to Siegfried at the end of SCIV. And Siegfried literally got possessed by Soul Edge, he's living with the guilt of massacring thousands of people so it's not like you can blame him for being a little somber. He has a nice rapport with Hilde and in his opening line with her in SCV it shows he has a sense of humour he's just holding back because events in his life have made him shy. And then Sophitia's life is literally a Greek tragedy so it's no wonder her cheeky side is replaced by desperation to save and nurture her children.

...literally.
THIS.
I haven't done reading all of posts yet and the topic has probably changed but I would like share my thoughts on this.
I don't think serious character =shallow. Also Taki Sophitia Siegfried (duh) had been through so many things compared to most of the roster(Sophitia and Sieg mostly) . I would add Raphael and Hilde too. Poor man's life is keep falling apart by each game because of soul edge&calibur . And Hilde her father got berserk so she had to come to the throne at the age of 11.

She has been fighting from those days only to lost her country to "toxic effects".So I don't get why would people complain because she is a serious character .
In SC IV her story shows the trauma she has been through, too bad they never actually explained more about her, she actually had potential.

Speaking of SC IV I don't get why people hate that game so much.
I know it was lacking in some ways and wasn't best still can't deny I actually had very good time playing it.
I think it's still a special game just by bringing online game play.

You do know the game is unfinished, right? Every game, specially fighting games, looks different when its released. They're not paying attention to small details that can be improved later.

While Mitsurugi definitely looks great in his SCV render, I think a lot of that is aided by lighting and shading effects that SCVI perhaps doesn't have yet. It was hinted in the PSX interview that they have a lot left to do, which is why they don't want to give us a release date yet. I think the hair in SCIV for the characters was extremely shiny and looked like it was covered in gel or something.

You have to consider though, that Soulcalibur's graphics aren't really reaching for photorealism, and there's only a certain extent that the quality of the graphics can go to before they reach a stylistic limit. The textures look great imo, they aren't as grainy or flickery as past games were, the detail in the clothing is amazing, as well as all the gorgeous detailing in the stage and its 3D backdrops. Then consider this is still an unfinished game at its first public showing, and it's not a CGI showing like most games are when they are announced for the first time. They have the opportunity to polish up any imperfections in the graphics such as the translucency of the hair, which I agree looks a bit too matte, however it also doesn't look like straw which it did in SCIV and V. But they aren't finished yet and I don't think they will be for another 9 months.

I read a lot of posts like this when Tekken 7 was in development. Wasn't really impressed with the final product. It had a shiny veneer, but beneath it were the same old problems. Reused assets sometimes dating all the way back to Tekken 6, which hit arcades a decade prior. Hair that looked like flapping paper strips cut into various shapes and smothered with vaseline. Lots of old models and old modeling techniques married to a new engine, not taking advantage of the engine's strengths. And for all that, the game still takes too long to load, something else people assumed would be fixed leading into release.

Forgive me if I don't have faith in Bamco's ability to improve on things like these in under a year's time.

Ooooh I was really vouching for Ave and Macaulyn but that reminder of Tekken 7 is just a bit too accurate . . .
