So is CaliburForum officially dead?

It seems that there is hardly anyone there anymore. Usually when I check it there are about 5 people browsing it (along with a bunch of 'guests' who are actually bots).

I'm just wondering what people think about it and its future. It definitely seems like 8wr is the main hub for competitive SC now.

I have to admit, I had good times browsing the forums and discussing strats for SC2, 3, and 4 over the past few years. RIP CaliburForum.

Well Jaxel, DFG and the rest of the community did such a good job on this site; and they did it before caliburforum.com could get anything going in terms of updates.

There is also a difference when management at CF clearly doesn't care about their community, nor the state of their forums. Its clear that the only reason CF is up at all, is because of a power-play... and they lost, so now they are letting their own forum rot. I mean you can see all the promises they have been making at CF, and a full month later, still nothing has changed.

Hell, I've made a point to make sure that abuse of power here at 8WR is minimum... I tell mods/admins that they are free to argue with other members, as members themselves, but they are never permitted to bring their mod/admin status into the argument. I'm sure you've seen me reprimand mods/admins around the forums for doing just that. But I still see the admins at CF abusing their power; and in the worst way too... I mean, its one thing to sticky one of your own threads when it shouldn't be stickied; that really doesn't hurt the community. But to sticky a random shitty tournament (that isn't a major), simply because you're running it and you're an admin... That does hurt the community, it makes every other tournament organizer feel like they aren't as important as some dipshit admin.

TRIED is the operative word. Either way, the only things keeping CF alive is their "history", and a few person's hatred for me. Putting the hatred aside, it is their "history" that hurts the community. People who are new to Soulcalibur and want to get into the community, know about CF if they have been a part of the other gaming communities (SRK, TZ, etc); but a lot of people outside of the Soulcalibur community don't know about 8WR. So they end up going to CF, they see how shitty it is... and turn their backs on us. CF hurt the community with its failures during launch week, and CF is still hurting the community by failing to wave the white flag.

Going back to the hatred... thats all XA and Neoshinji are depending on, and they are hoping its all thats need to keep CF afloat. They even go so far as to spread lies about it... Here is a convo I had with Brian a while ago back when the CF thread still existed (before it was deleted): (I copied this over from the premium members lounge)

Look I'm trying to stay out of this crap. But they are painting some pretty inaccurate pictures to anyone who questions their site over yours-

From my e-mail to Greg and Sasif asking why nationals site isn't done, yet they are working on CF:

Jaxel has become what he hates; threatening bans randomly, acting power hungry, and abusing the community - it's like WCMaxi all over again, only worse. All that, on top of the fact I still feel he intentionally wrecked CF on his "way out" of admin to help him build his site up.

CF.com is the only site that has the user base it does, and the community mindset I back. Neoshinji is setting up community based committees, and an open technical team. This leads to clear ban rules, and no 'one man' running the show. Neo may LIVE in Chicago, but he's not "the old chicago" WCMaxi ran by any extreme. I think he gets a bad rap for simply living in Chi, and having dealt with him as much as I have over the last year, I respect Philip alot.

8wr has a great facade, but I am concerned with it's future - it's like GI.com with a obvious flaw, waiting to explode. The main SC.com community has always lasted because it had the people caring about it. WC may be out of the picture, but I think that sets up CF.com with an even brighter future.

NOW, I answered him and told him that is all pretty much BS, but I'm sure my thoughts mean jack shit to them.

The best way you can combat this is to NOT flame them, but take notice to their misinformation, and dispell it at every turn, professionaly- that way people will respect it.

Honestly the only big thing they can play against you easily, is the fact so many people dislike you or are annoyed by you, so they are willing to believe any bad things they hear. Improve your diplomacy and your leadership, and no one will have a reason to believe them or their lies, and they will self-destruct.

for serious.

As you can clearly see I've been posting less in the thread... I'm instead restricting myself to posts that I can back up with factual data; such as the name colors on day one and the 65% growth rate chart. Frankly, it seems that the situation has evolved to the point where I don't need to fight this battle anymore, the community members are fighting it for me. In fact, if you want to post all this stuff in the thread, I'm okay with that too. Basically, all they are doing is spreading FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) about 8WR, but its a lost cause when the uncertainty and doubt all lies within CF.

But I just lost all my respect for XA/Saif from this. Not a SINGLE person has ever been banned from 8WR; people who know how I worked at SSR and the Crooked Jester Forums, know that I am totally adverse to the idea of banning. I dont do it; especially with an infraction system in place. I don't ban people and lots of people know it; its one of the things I complained about to XCTU, rampant banning. And you can see from here that only two people have ever recieved infractions...

Also, where am I acting power hungry? I am not forcing anyone to do things "my way or the highway". I'm not banning or giving infractions to people who don't agree with me. Sure, I often change titles of threads and re-arrange things, but thats to help keep things organized on these forums. Why would we want a forum thats disorganized, with posts in wrong sections... like a Cassandra Combo Video in the SCIV General section... with no moderators acting to move it. So where is the abuse? What they see as "abuse", I see as a failure on their part to properly moderate and maintain their own community.

Also, how would I intentionaly wreck CF on my way out? CF was already tipping it over, and if I wanted to wreck it, it would have been gone and wouldn't have taken 3 months. I don't mix personal issues with business issues; and I'm not so petty that I would screw the community over like they would. The day I de-admined myself on CF, I de-orphaned the forums again, I restored the title images (otherwise they would have been broken, which I could have done, but I chose not to), and I made back-ups of the database in case the server went down without me...

Which of course it did, it just took 3 months because the events of launch week turned away thousands of people and they never came back to the forums again. The times the forum actually needed to be up and running smoothly, it wasn't. If you read the admin forums at 8WR, there are clear infraction rules... there are no ban rules because... WE DONT BAN PEOPLE! Time and time again has proven that Neoshinji doesn't care about the community.

"The main SC.com community has always lasted because it had the people caring about it."

Lets not forget that this website has a CLEARLY DEFINED soccer penalty system...

I only visit to read posts from the few members who still visit. Heaven forbid those same members still visit for the same reason.

Just stay here, people. It's ok. Really.

I feel kinda bad about it.

Soulcalibur.com/Caliburforums were the place to be for competitive SC talk and seeing it in such bad shape doesn't suit well with me.

But Jaxel was kinda like the Bible's Noah giving warning after warning, and they didn't listen and mocked him. The result is now this but it still sucks seeing the place like that.

Caliburforums was a bad idea from day one. I hope everyone learned their lesson from this and no one will ever again get the bright idea to up and move the community to an 'official' website - especially one designed for a single installment, and one installment only, of a series.

I love how Jaxel's writing essays about how his site is so much better while everyone else seems neutral.

BTW, how did that whole issue with the abuse of power start? I don't remember what triggered it.

Anyone want to give brief history of what happened with CF.com? Like when it started and why it fell?

I love forum history!

I'm new here and I just started play SC while CF.com was down so I made my account here. The backgrounds on this forum are just so pretty, I couldn't go back to the other one.

I actually liked the old sc2 background. Maybe because I was used to seeing it for so many years. Unfortunately cf doesn't even have that anymore.

but a lot of people outside of the Soulcalibur community don't know about 8WR. So they end up going to CF, they see how shitty it is... and turn their backs on us.
Anyone stupid enough to do this deserves to be exclusive to CF.com. Jaxel, I can't say enough good things about this site and the work you've put into it really shows. I can't see the value of anybody who would be so myopically stubborn to refuse 8wayrun, for any reason.

If the naysayers are ever right about how 8wayrun is this or Jaxel is that and this is just a fad that will implode, I don't give a shit because here and now this site is superb.

Anyone want to give brief history of what happened with CF.com? Like when it started and why it fell?
It started as Soulcalibur.com, the forum was originally built for SC2. Namco let it sit there all through SC3, so people stuck around. Then Namco pulled the plug. WCM had a backup of the site made in case something like that happened, and he got it hosted on another Namco server. The problem was it wasn't offically hosted by Namco, and the bulletin board software they were using was an ancient version from the SC2 rollout.

WCM was the only one with access to the server, and he'd moved on. Repairs to the DB file couldn't be made, and CF kept crashing as a result until it finally collapsed. Only then did it get a VB upgrade, and by then CF had pretty much undermined most of the visitor's confidence.

8wr was a result of CF's building instability. A stable site with current tech that could handle visitors without slowing down to a crawl or crashing. (Working against inertia introduced a bit of a schism.)

I've noticed something about the kind of person who's interested in administrating a message board. It also happens to be a characteristic of most independant store owners: They have raging megahard boners for themselves. Nowhere else do I see such awesomely outspoken egos.

Continuation of what Marginal said.

See what happened was...

Caliburforums was crashing and burning slowly
Jaxel tried to work with the CF admins to get a new server. 8wayrun could have been the new caliburforums...but...
they said fuck him.
Some of us said fuck them.
Moved here with Jaxel.
CF crashed and burned.
More people came here.
Instead of sucking it up and moving on, the CF admins still held a grudge...and set up another caliburforums.
We argued against it...but they were too stubborn.
We ignored them and just did our thing here at 8wayrun.
Yay...for 8wayrun.
