Soulcalibur VI DLC Discussion Thread

They're not. That's fitting a square peg into a round hole.
We'll see. There's more evidence for than against, I think. The only way we'll know for sure is to wait and see.

They're not similar because Grøh continues to get buffed and was great from the start unlike Z.W.E.I.
Not really relevant, since Tira got dropped to low tier and Xianghua isn't even close to being top anymore. Rebalancing doesn't mean anything for identity.

It's not purple it's blue but the purple attire is used by other members of the Aval Organization which as we know is another name for Avalon, part of the King Arthur legend which is royalty.

The exact colour of the streaks in his perfectly feathered hair is not really the relevant point. (Although, interesting historical sidenote, blue pigment (and therefor blue dye) was actually extremely rare until the invention of modern synthetics; very few natural sources of pigment are truly blue and most "blue" animals achieve the appearance through iridescent effects.) The question is, why does he look like he's the front man for an MCR cover band to begin with? Who handed over responsibility for the character designs for all new characters in this series to the five fans of Fall Out Boy living in Japan, and why? I mean, I get why it happened in SCV; it was part and parcel of the general Street Fighter-fication of that game. But most everything in SCVI was handled as a return to the classic style, so how did the two new characters end up so tonally divergent?

Anyway, his hair is purple-pink when he's in Soul Charge--I guess when you're Malfested Thetan level hits OT VI, you gain the power to make your hair dye luminesce the same color as your "badazz" glowing eyeball. Kewl...

Then again, the Aval Organization is a borderline Illuminati-esque group of malfested hunters, so obviously, they got good at working from the shadows. Hell, if they existed in the original timeline, they would probably have a "leave no witnesses" policy.

Well personally, where characters are concerned, my focus has always been on the play mechanics rather than the art design of the default models. Indeed, if a significant amount of questionable character design choices was a driving factor for me, I would have stopped playing the series a long time ago. Besides, these days its pretty simple to CaS your way around such concerns, even if you want to practice exclusively under tournament conditions. I'm just much more concerned about having access to as many classic styles as possible, and having them out there in the ocean of opponent selections, even if I never had much interest in playing them myself.

That said, I don't think you have anything to worry about with regard to Dampierre or literally anyone from SCV. The character farthest into the original narrative we might realistically see is Hilde, and I'm thinking even she has only a far outside chance. Yun-seong's certainly in the running though (though like you, I would prefer Hwang).

Though I don't think there's the remotest chance of her inclusion in SCVI, I actually found Viola's style to be one of the very, very few positive developments with SCV's roster (that game was a misfire in so many ways when it comes to broad-stroke design choices, but even in areas where it largely blundered, it had the occasional positive feature). On the flip side, I will say that, whether the theory that she is meant to be an amensiac Amy is true or not, her style was by no means a reasonable replacement for Amy's style. Still, of all of the SCV exclusive characters I should like to see return at some point in future game installments (and there are a few), Viola is at the top of the list. She was tricky as hell to make work, but truly unique with a compelling move flow. In a perfect alternate reality where there were four or five season passes (as opposed to the more realistic one or two we are likely to see) I'd be very happy to see her back.

Speaking of ZWEI, am I the only one who feels like that emo edgelord has to be Groh's little brother? I can totally see ZWEI sneaking into Groh's room to steal his The Cure and My Chemical Romance cds and hair dye...

I dont really select my characters off appearance either. Although i probably am very picky. Certain things will really turn me off. I'm more about movements, stance, general attitude.

Zwei was just... a complete mess for a few reasons. Yes i am annoyed by the emo, edgelord vibe of both him and Groh. Although like you said, CAS can handle a lot of that... provided we have a good amount of options to make what we want. Lets not go there.

I'm guessing SC5 came out around the Twilight wave. Or at least at a time closer to it when the Werewolf thing was still a big deal. Seems like they tried rolling in all these pointless wolf-related visual themes in an attempt to capitalize on that. Or they knew there was a sizable demand for a Werewolf character and tried rolling it together with a summoner concept with the end result being stupid.

Zwei's stance and movements felt way too overexaggerated for no apparent reason. The guy isnt supposed to be a martial artist, yet they have him twirling around and constantly switching grip on that sword which for whatever reason is a handle on both ends of the crossguard. As i said, he's not a martial artist, so his movements are not particularly elaborate or entertaining... but he's still twirling around like an idiot regardless. I'd compare it to small childeren playfighting with toy swords visually. He'd be a lot more likable if he swung his weapon normally like Geralt or Ezio.

The short and sweet point here is, if you come up with an interesting concept to a character (summoner), use that and run with it. Let that sell the character. Dont roll in a bunch of other pointless nonsense that has nothing to do with anything.

Actually design-wise Azwel is really decent imo, but then again we have his moveset which I despise a lot from gameplay perspective. Groh on the other hand... Well I simply can't treat this character seriously. Even ZWEI was better (whom I mained in SCV for reasons I can't remember now)

Yup, and Groh has an even greater degree of idiotic weapon syndrome--even by Soul Calibur standards, that thing is ridiculous. At least the additional grips on Zwei's sword would allow some biomechanical leverage--less effective leverage than just holding it by the pommel like a frickin sword, but some leverage. There's a reason why (in thousands of years of ancient warfare and an arms history replete with people ceaselessly refining methods for stabbing and cutting one-another up) no one ever adopted a weapon with two long blades stuck together with a handle in the middle: it's an idiotic liability that minimizes the leverage, striking force, range, and range of motion that you would have if you just cut the damn thing in half and used just that. Plus it would allow your opponent to constantly turn one of the blades against you by applying minimal force to the other end, since, as a matter of basic physics intuitive to anyone who's ever held a weapon (or for that matter, anyone who has ever gripped a broom handle at its center), the whole damn thing functions like a giant damn lever in that situation... It's the dumbest weapon imagininable for anyone who took more than few seconds to examine the concept. But, whatever, it's not like there haven't been plenty of those in Soul Calibur before--I don't think Grohs weapon should invite too much obsession in a series where Voldo made the point early that these weapons and moves aren't always meant to make sense under a close analysis. So that wouldn't set my eyes to rolling nearly as hard, except, you know, the rest of the vibe/the visual package as a whole isn't exactly giving us reasons to overlook it--everywhere one looks to find relief from the stupid, they find more stupid, so the eyeball just bounces from his goofy weapon to his nonsense eye-patch to his emo hair and back again.

Ugh, the first time I saw the release trailer for Azwel, I told a friend I couldn't tell if he looked like more like a Buck Rogers villain or a 1950's stage magician who is now mostly known as a sex offender--and I haven't come up with or seen a more apt description for what's going on there since. But, you know, sometimes a maniacal villain is fun. He feels like a bargain bin Kefka sometimes, but, uhhh, you know, he's doing his own thing I guess--that's about the best I can come up with. ;) I do think his style is the best and most visually intereesting of the three "manifesting energy weapons out of thin air" movesets that we have seen across the series, and it lends itself to a lot of great CaS designs quite well.

As much as I love both of them, I'd still gladly take Grøh over ZWEI's werewolf-toting, BDSM leather and chains-wearing self anyday.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I've been very vocal about the twinblade and how ridiculous it is but any time i brought it up, i was immediately met with comments detailing how unrealisc most of the other weapons are. Its always been stupid to me since i first saw it on Darth Maul but at least he had an extended hilt. That way you know... it could actually be comfortably held.

For me, what gets a pass is when there is supposed to be an obvious explanation. Magic is usually ok with me because that sort of thing is up front and clear. Yes Ivy has a mystical sword that switches from sword to whip but at least most of her attacks in either form is something that a person could actually do with a sword or a whip. Not all of it obviously but most of it. Even in Tira's case, i'm pretty sure i've seen people do pretty cool shit with hoops for circus acts or whatever. Not exactly a practical weapon but i could see someone doing at least better with that than a twinblade.

Azwell... i dont know it looks too much like conducting an orchestra so that is off-putting. I could totally see someone making a montage video of Azwell's attacks timed with classical music. And why does he need to bend his wrists that much for his stance? Relax, dude. This kind of goes back to what i was saying about exaggerated movements and stances. Characters are trying too hard.

Christ that Kefka comment, had me laughing harder than i should but yeah, i definitely see some of that.

I think Zasalamel was done very well. His weapon may not be very practical but it is at least swung and held in a manner that looks acceptable. By a character who is also very likable.

Yup, man, I'm in agreement with just about every word of that. I'm not quite as inclined to give the hoola-hoop of death a pass--SCIII is definitely where things began to go a bit off the rails in regard to silly weapons far outnumbering the more or less realistic ones in the new movesets, and Tira is pretty emblematic of all of that, I feel. But you know, the longer the impractical weapons are around, the more you just tune them out and accept their movements as part of the majesty of the fight--I'll probably feel the same about Groh with time...well, maybe. It will help when he's balanced a little and not irritating me on that level as well, I'm sure. I agree about Darth Maul, by the way--as you say, at least he has somewhat broader grip section and that thing is obviously meant to more of a staff analog, and accommodates a two-handed grip (and thus marginally more leverage and stability, though you'd almost never have your hands that close together when using an actual staff for combat), but it would still be an idiotic weapon in a world of lightsabers; all your opponent would have to do is wait you out, block your blows (which can only come in akwardly from a handful of angles while both lightsabers are activated) and make the occasional outward swing, and you would quickly exhaust yourself with the effort of having to keep from being cut in half by the haft end of your own weapon--which, because you have to grip the thing near its center of gravity, takes a huge amount of exertion. This is not a problem when you just want flashy backlip-and-vroom-fwoosh fight choreography, but in an actual fight with swords that weigh nothing and cut through physical resistance like air, it would be a disastrous liability. It's basically the worst possible design for that theoretical weapon, short of sticking two of them together at a right angle! Actually, the big question that all of the variances we've now seen in lightsabers raises is why no one just creates one that has a five foot beam (blade? whatever) and a one-foot handle that could be gripped by both hands. With those advantages, a random guy of the streets with normal upper body strength and reflexes would be able route even the most experienced duelist. But Star Wars, like Soul Calibur, is not fruitful ground in which to look for sense!

Anyway, I think Zasalamel's scythe is the perfect example of something that is on the reasonable side of jumping the shark. It's not as ideal as either a poleaxe for warfare, or a sword for dueling, but back against the wall, a person could make do with it--there's a reason why it was a mainstay of peasant armies for much of medieval history and going back into the classical era in both the east and west. So as a stylistic leap to give someone a unique weapon in a fantasy context, it's a sensible choice. Likewise, I agree with you about the "magic" weapons. Of course in the broader sense they aren't realistic, but what makes them less of an eyesore in the context of SC's fantasy action is how they aren't realistic. Ivy's sword can move under its own power, Viola has a flying orb, and Necrid uses force fields. Ok, fine--all very silly, we can agree. But once you accept those conceits, the physics of how they impact can still be rendered in a way that looks like it has actual weight. Whereas Groh, Zwei, Tira, and half of the bonus styles from SCIII:CE, among numerous other styles since SCII, have weapons that are ostensibly not magical and just made out of normal materials, but they look way goofier because even people who have never trained with melee weapons sense that there is something off about the fact that they can get so much power out of holding weapons at such akward angles which don't allow proper leverage or purchase for the purposes of handing and control--and often have blades oriented in such a way that they would obviously more often be driven into the wielder, rather than the opponent. Honestly, I prefer the guy who looks more like a wizard to the guy who has a completely impractical weapon. Though, rather than either of those options, I'd prefer we just had more new original characters are at least vaguely rooted in actual historical weapons and fighting styles that have not made it into the series yet. But whatever--nitpicks, rights? At the end of the day, if the roster is diverse and well balanced, I'm just happy for every extra character.

I'd prefer for both ZWEI and Viola to be their own characters instead of future Groh and Amy (and I'd also prefer for SCV-tier timeskip to not happen this time).
They could appear from rift/astral chaos portal, which would make it not so unusual for one to have STANDO POWAH and another to have telekinesis and future-telling abilities. Their similarities to Groh/Amy could also play out in the story in some way, like having a spiritual link, being "versions" of each other from different worlds or whatever.
We already have elves village and angels/demons coming from rifts (even though it happens in Libra only), so this is not really all that lore breaking.

Not a big fan of the Viola = Amy approach Project Soul seems to have gone for back in SCV, so I'd love to see Viola come back with a new outfit, VA, face and height.

I did a bad thing and snooped through the game's files after today's update, and found this in the same file where Cassandra and Amy are listed as DLC characters. Namco still hasn't learned how to clean up properly.

Are these other dlc supposed to be some kind of characters? Stone/Rock? Reptile/Lizardman? What do these mean?

They are indeed listed as characters. I'm assuming these are code names, which means Namco has gotten slightly better at hiding secrets, but some of them are also really obvious. Anyone who has prior knowledge of SC is probably gonna know who "STONE" and "REPTILE" are referring to.

I’m thinking Snow could be Setsuka, since her name is a translation for Snow Flower.

Merely a theory anyway.

I would PMSL if yellow is the placeholder for Li Long, nothing controversial about that. XD
At first I thought you were referring to the color of his outfit, to which I thought, "Isn't Li Long's costume orange?" And then I realized you weren't talking about his clothing...

Okay but seriously, I have no clue who YELLOW could be. A guest? A re-designed Yun-seong with a yellow color scheme? I have no clue.
