Soulcalibur VI DLC Discussion Thread

I've been thinking, what if the characters were chosen in pairs based on rivalries and such? If that's the case, then my predictions are:
  • STONE and REPTILE: Rock and Aeon/Lizardman. Aeon was ordered by Fygul Cestemus to kidnap Bangoo as bait to lure out Rock and steal his soul.
  • YELLOW and STAR; Hwang and Yun-seong. Yun-seong idolizes Hwang, and Hwang is aware that Yun-seong is searching for Soul Edge as well.
  • YELL and SNOW: Li Long and Setsuka. Technically there's no direct relation between these two, but they both seek vengeance on Mitsurugi.
I still stand by my previous predictions too (STAR is Algol, idk who YELL is), but I think this is a possibility as well.

I think there is a key element to this season pass many of us are forgetting with our speculation. Drawing the obvious conclusions from the codenames leaves us with a lineup of relatively unpopular characters. Setsuka alone isnt going to sufficiently carry sales. Her, Hilde and Yun might do well. Aeon, Hwong, Algol, Rock and Li Long will not. Yet many of them appear match well with the codenames and i think most of us are in agreement with who matches to what... except Yell.

With an almost entirely unpopular lineup, they'd have to include a guest. Not doing so would be marketing suicide. I dont see most of these selling very well.

That's why I'm kinda skeptical about algol and li long. Doubt the less hardcore fans will give a fuck about Li Long, even if we do. Not sure what the point of rock is, if people just think "muscle grapple man the second". I'd like to see classic characters but I think we're probs gonna get at least 1 guest, and I doubt we'll get rock or Li Long. People have been clamouring for Hwang so he's more likely. I really would like Hwang, Algol and Li Long. I'm happy to just sit back for the ride and hope we dont get necrid.

I think there may be a degree of subjectivity in your analysis of how "unpopular" those characters are. Plenty of people would love to see any one of the six classic characters (Rock, Hwang, Li Long, Lizardman, Yun-seong, and Setsuka) return, provided they are done justice in their moveset. The fact that they will almost certainly be bundled in a season pass helps, of course, but that's the beauty of the model; Namco can give the consumer the choice of taking a price break for the full set or just purchasing individual characters if they (the consumer) are not sold on the whole package.

And while you're right that money is the bottom line, clearly PS has set their sights on a design strategy here that, at ever single turn thus far, has followed a very predictable pattern. Clearly they are willing to stake their flag on remaking the classic story first. They must believe (and I think they are correct here, provided they do their job well) that they can make the older characters first while also making the case for their being viable styles that bring something to the table. And that those styles (even if some of them are a little older) will attract attention when people begin to see them enter the fray. And I think they know that for any one of those characters they have more than enough series loyalists looking to get their hands on them again and become a sufficient install base to drive further sales. Especially since those vets will be kicking ass and taking names in the honeymoon period because of the lack of familiarity younger players will have with their moves when playing against them.

Look, if anyone were a realist about the marketing reality of content like this, its me. But Project Soul are clearly only willing to cater so far in distorting their original design objectives and warping their new narrative to accommodate fan favourites coming in an order that directly reflects a one-to-one correspondence with this or that random poll taken a few years ago, but which would throw their new approach off-kilter and asbotage the quality of the over-all product. Short of a handful of extremely unpopular characters, I think they're willing to follow their own design instincts before that kind of fan service. And I think they are right to do that--not just because tacking their sails on fan expectations would have made this a bizarre Frankenstein's monster of a game, but also because I think plenty of people will just buy the season pass and be quite content with some of those characters not being their absolute favourites. Again, provided they avoid a few characters who are absolute poison, I think most are going to sell more than sufficiently well enough to justify the investment. Remember, so long as the serialized content train is running relatively well, it's a far superior cost-benefit return than what they get for the base game.

I doubt if Bamco will pay to Todd McFarlane to use this character again.

Actually, I've looked at the IP situation for that character, and (as best one can tell without looking at the actual licensing documents) I think Namco may own Necrid free and clear. But I think probably it's at least a more complicated situation to add him in, and not worth their effort, given his unpopularity and odd tonal fit. I've come to think of Necrid as the quasi-guest character. He was poorly conceptualized for SCII, and obviously a tag-along to Spawn's inclusion as a guest, and, again, never terribly popular. I think there's a reason he now stands a good chance of being the only main roster character (aside from Link, Spawn, and Heihachi) from SE-SCIII who will not get added into SCVI.

Honestly though, I've long felt that Necrid gets more hate than he deserves. Sure, he's....different, but not really a whit more than a third of all other Soul Calibur characters at this point! Plus, one thing people forget about him: he was kind of a beast, and even if his model is underwhelming, his moveset is actually is quite fun--the concept of mixing and matching variations on the moves of the other characters, with new timing, dynamics and properties, actually came together in a pretty entertaining and competitive style. I played and labed him a little when SCII HD Online came out, and re-discovered just how much he can put vets on the backfoot. As highly unlikely to ever happen as it is, I would nevertheless welcome his moveset being transferred to another character or into CaS (Devil Jin style) some day; I think that goofy MacFarlane design was a disservice to a well-executed concept.

Much as I don't care for another guest, I'd be surprised if we didn't get one.
Only other issue with that is that I can't think of a single character that's currently relevant, looks aesthetically appropriate, and has an interesting fighting style.
Thus far, any that come to mind is missing at least one of those things.

In my (mostly realistic) little Umbran mind, I'm thinking:

• Out of six characters, two of them will most likely be guests.
• If only 1 guest, guest will be bigger than Geralt or 2B. If so, Either Hwang or Yun will be in season pass. Only 1 will be DLC, not both.
• No SCV character will be DLC. Yes, that includes fan-favorite, Viola.
• Setsuka and Hilde are too popular to skip a 6-character season pass. They'll both be in.
• Dampierre is an obvious "No" for being generally unlikable. The point of DLC is to make money.
• Li Long is not well-known enough to bring back. He will not return.
• Algol is not an impossibility, however he seems unlikely given that we have characters that are basically confirmed - filling his possible spot of the roster. Which leads me to...
• Stone and Reptile are no-brainers. Rock and Aeon/Lizardman will be in the season pass and given gameplay overhauls like Mina to make them more unique.

We should expect these pairs:

• Option 1
Rock + Guest#3
Setsuka + Yun
Aeon + Hilde

• Option 2
Rock + Guest#3
Setsuka + Aeon
Hilde + Guest#4

Personally, I think Option 1 is the best outcome. The majority of SC fans want less guests and more veterans. Also, adding Rock and Aeon/Lizardman as DLC over Hwang/Yun seems like a major missed opportunity.

STONE :sc4roc1:
YELL :sc4hil1:
STAR :sc5vio1:
SNOW :sc3set1:
REPTILE :sc2liz5:
YELLOW :sc3hwang1:

Stone, Snow, and Reptile are pretty obvious due to the names. Stone is synonymous to Rock which points to Stone being Rock, Lizards are Reptiles which points to Aeon who is also known as Lizardman to be Reptile, Setsuka in Japanese means Snow Flower which points to Setsuka being Snow.

Another naming convention would be that Hwang's name can be translated to Yellow in Korean Hanja. This is less obvious since it isn't in Japanese or English but the name of Hwang's theme in the Khan Super Session is named "Yellow Sands" so maybe Bandai Namco knows what they're doing when giving him the code name Yellow.

Yell and Star is when things start to get very tricky. I'm putting Hilde for Yell since she has a very unique moveset and she yells a lot but it could also be a Yun-Seong or even a guest character or new character. I'm putting Viola as Star since she placed very high on the character poll and has a very unique moveset, but it could also be Algol or even a new character or guest character.

If Viola does come back, I'm guessing that she would be a "predecessor" to the Viola we knew in SoulCalibur V rather than a time traveler. It would be similar to how Astaroth and Yoshimitsu were introduced as new characters in SoulCalibur V as the "successor" but it would be in reverse. We could potentially see a Viola origin story.

Dark Souls, Castlevania and Samurai Showdown all have good candidates i think. They just wont have the same impact as 2B.

Of course they've already thrown aesthetics out the window anyway so i dont know if that would matter.

This is what they could have and should have done with Inferno. We could have been looking at a more diverse mix of Nightmare, Cervantes, Algol, Unique new stuff with appropriate balance in mind rather than the broken Nightmare clone we got.

By aesthetics, I'm referring to character design. Yes, 2B is a robot, but it's not like she's decked out in futuristic battle armor or has visible wiring or anything. She looks more human than not and she's got a gothic lolita-inspired design, which isn't new for this series. Visually she's not particularly out of place.

But yeah, a character from one of those could be doable, I forgot about them. I could see a Code Vein character also being a possibility as a way to promote the game, maybe.

If we got another guest, I would want Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia, really, and it’s not just because I’ve been playing Definitive Edition or anything. And definitely not because he has Mitsurugi’s 1p from SoulCalibur IV to give me the idea. His one handed sword/axe style would be pretty cool, and working his Artes in could be neat, with Soul Charge being like Over Limit and his Mystic Artes could be his Critical Edges.
