Soulcalibur VI DLC Discussion Thread

In a perfect world, Project Soul would reveal all four DLC characters at once.

Samurai Shodown made it perfectly clear. They didn't try to hide it, keep it a secret and make it all suspenseful, but were honest. And they were all the better for it.

Seriously, I think PS keeping it a secret while also being dead silent only hurt them more than it helped. This is especially true because we knew of Amy and Cassandra for a long time, so even making it secret did them no favors in that regard. I've seen multiple posts elsewhere using SS as the perfect example that SC should follow.

I really hope things will be different this time, especially since each character comes with a CAS DLC pack as opposed to being in between (kinda important).

Just imagine they fill each space right away:

Hwang | Haohmaru | Setsuka | Newcomer

It is bizarre how differently SoulCalibur is treated compared to literally any other fighting game that Namco makes or publishes. It's not even whining or trying to cast shade on anyone, honestly, it's just an interpretation of the matter of the facts. There's no reason that SoulCalibur VI couldn't have just announced everyone, either. And it would put a lid on a lot of the arguments that arise, such as the mystery of the grey slot of our own season 2.

In a real perfect world, Bandai Namco would retract their DLC plans of staggering four characters and instead reveal that we will have a character EVERY MONTH for the rest of the year and throw in a free DLC character in between. Kappa

Seriously though, what SNK did with Samurai Shodown was very unlike what other companies do for their fighting games. They deserve all the praise they got for this. They went from:
Rimururu: August 2019 → August 2019
Shizumaru: n/a → September 2019 (FREE)
Basara: October 2019 → October 2019
Kazuki: December 2019 → November 2019
Wan-Fu: February 2020 → December 2019

They accelerated the release date for two characters, added a free character in between, and announced Season 2 before Season 1 even ended. Okubo works really hard and wants the game to be the best it could be but I honestly doubt Bandai Namco would let him do something like this. We could only wish for it to be so.

P.S. While Samurai Shodown 2019 has a much larger presence than SoulCalibur VI in the fighting game community, I honestly doubt they had more budget and sales especially since SoulCalibur VI has Geralt of Rivia slapped into its front cover. Of course that's just my opinion, I haven't really seen the numbers yet to factually compare and declare my statements to be facts.

Why does Soul Calibur have to have more guests, they are so numerous now (Haohmaru would be the 15th) that Project Soul may as well create a separate entry with just characters from other games with Soul Calibur mechanics.

I'm with you on that, if it was up to me "and just ME" i wouldn't mind no more guests but only brand new SC characters instead, but let's be honest Guests bring hype and more interest from large audience. I've seen Maximillian reacting to the announcement and it was when they showed Hao Maru that he got the most excited, and for Tekken 7 his interest reached the peak when that "thing" called Akuma was announce for the game, i think it's important and good for the games to make someone like Maximillian with 1 million followers like/play more the game.

I'm still waiting for Salia and Gisele stealing Vader & Ezio moves for they debut in SC VII/VIII.. :sc2tak2:

I actually wonder if Bamco has the rights to do with/can do it, i know they did it with Aeon/Kratos but maybe it was the deal with Sony that allow it (in general Sony are bit more open in those kind of things)

If they can do it i would like a character that plays like Vador.

I refuse to accept hwang so easily compared to the rest of you guys.

Yun seong is easier for the devs to implement. The color yellow could apply to him. Though honestly green has almost always been the color for Yun’s Kata trails(the color that follows the weapon when you swing)

Hwang had a blue sword trail in SC arcade, then orange in console. Assassin was yellow, then for 3 hwang console was green, and arcade was orange

Or the colors have no meaning. Which would not surprise me at all.

I understand that Okubo has to be aware of hwang due to vocal fans and our own Hayate being a champion for hwang to return...but the odds have always been against hwang. It’s never turned out good for him

So what do you think was meant by "resurrection" when Okubo said it?

  • Hwang is likely because the fanbase likes him, he's already got full art, and a unique voice actor, plus his own adventures offscreen that could be explored.
  • Setsuka is easily the most popular character of these that are left, given her unique style and appearance. She's practically a lock.

The promotional image was very likely foreshadowing, and the first three have colors that fit different characters.
  • Hwang (yellow; his name means yellow).
  • Haohmaru (red; revealed already, plus he has prominent red)
  • Setsuka (pink; she has a very prominent pink flower theme)
If they weren't meant to indicate anything, I'd say yellow, red, pink and white are awfully random colors to choose. Speaking of which, the white one is definitely a mystery to me since no one really fits.

Well, there is a past character known to some as "the White Giant" ...

I actually thought about that after the post, but it feels like a tenuous connection as it's only related to his race, and he doesn't have a white theme in general. And well, the counterpoints that have been done to death, not to mention that Okubo's reaction to Kayane's question heavily indicated the possibility of a newcomer. That, and I kinda doubt they'd close S2 on Rock.

I think it's an japanese to english mistake. Maybe the Resurrection Kanji was used but I say its a pass for characters last seen in SC4. 10 years absence is still a resurrection
I honestly don't think this tells us much: I think the idiomatic usage here was that we are talking about a character or characters who have not been seen in some time, but the fact of the matter is that this encompasses the vast majority of characters remaining in the classic roster pool who are likely to be added into SCVI. Basically I think we are talking about whose last appearance was SCIII, maybe SCIV: Hwang, Setsuka, Lizardman, Rock, Yun-Seong, Li long, outside chance of Hilde--I don't think Algol is likely. I'd say that list is roughly in order of likelihood, but not strictly. It's worth noting that if there is a third season pass of four characters, all of the first seven characters listed there could be accommodated.

Now, I don't know that it would completely turn me around on this game--which I just have a hard time enjoying playing for extended periods at the end of the day--but what we would have there is the entire main roster from the first four games (aka, the SCIII:AE selectable roster), plus 2B, Azwel, Geralt, Groh, Haohmaru, and Hilde--and (in terms of characters playable) that would be unquestionably the best line-up in the series history. That seems like a very plausible safe bet strategy for them: to go from the most disappointing roster at launch to the best (and most comprehensive of the classic era) by the end of continuing DLC support. It would really show the utility of the model, which is something they, like other developers in the fighting game market, are desperate to sell consumers on.

And I'd say their argument is stronger than ever if they not only hit an almost idealized roster in three season passes but also address the core gameplay woes with the added elements and gameplay tweaks coming down the pike. If they then at least do some marginal work to improve the stage selection, then this game will surely have been transformed by continuing support to a greater extent than not just any previous game in the series, but almost any in the genre (similar indeed to T7's improvements. The roster described above (or anything remotely like it), plus three more stages and five variants on existing stages, plus new mechanics that restore a pacing somewhat more in line with classic SC expectations, and you're looking at a significantly enhanced version of the game.

Of course, with that many moving parts, any number of idiotic choices can be made, it's just more things that can go wrong (or bluntly, more idiotic choices that can be made!), but I'm choosing to be an optimist today and maintain it until the next reveals. :)

But that is pretty much all of the characters left except Hilde and Lizardman. Both Amy and Cassandra plus some on the base roster qualify for that description. Its very odd for him to start using words like that if so many other character already qualify.

Is it odd? Why? It's not like he used the word in some fashion that was obviously contrasting with other characters, but rather in one that is incidental. In modern parlance, people use the term resurrection (and its cognates and similar terms in other languages) to describe the re-apperance of something in all manner of mundane contexts: "After a raft of minor vehicle infractions, the local parking commission decided to resurrect a moribund scheme for prohibiting on-street parking in the downtown area on weekends from 10pm to 5am." In no way is the use of 'resurrect' there referring to the second coming or any other revival reversing actual death--nor does it even reference an especially exciting or surprising revival, as a metaphorical matter. It merely means that something was defunct, and now it may not be.

On top of that, we're also talking about a translation here, which may have itself been inartful. I've yet to listen to the actual interview myself: if anyone has the original to post here, or an untranslated transcription, we could resolve this quite quickly, but even without it, we can be fairly confident this a case of people hearing a word, not giving the context in which it arose / chain of interpretation by which it arrived at them carefully enough and thus reading a meaning into the term that was almost certainly not intended. I think even if there was an effort to contrast in character(s) within the season pass with others in the statement, it means merely that these characters have been absent longer than those who have been added previously: in other words, they weren't just absent for SCV and Lost Swords, but SCIV as well. But it could just as easily describe characters absent 'merely' since SCIV (which was released more than 11 years ago at this point), which itself could easily constitute a fairly typical metaphorical usage of the word in this context. Basically, I think people are jumping at shadows on this one.

I’ve been hearing Yun-Seong is more requested among the Japanese community @AMillionHP and Project Soul is known to prioritize them. Though I can not verify where they are asking for Yunseong for proof

I just wanna say do not underestimate Project Soul's ability to be out of touch. They could still be using that shitty poll from 2015 to determine the season 2 pass.

Meaning Yun-Seong would be next
